Basically, when a game gets really good reviews and you don't like it that much.
Or, when there's no Kirbiez!

When it does not include Tingle in it it is overrated.

This.

Overrated games get praise for doing things that other games do far better. Big example is Bioshock. Great game on it's own but not revolutionary. Everyone forgets that System Shock 2 accomplished everything Bioshock accomplished (atmosphere, story, gameplay, etc.) and it did so a decade earlier using far less advanced technology. Plus SS2 was just a better game in general.

When it's a first-person shooter and people say that it is the best invention since the microwave.

I'm back (for the moment)!

In general, from what I've seen lately, overrated seems to mean "I wasn't alive when this game came out & since I have no appreciation for anything that came out before I was born, I just don't understand why people like it because compared to the games that I've played, (which is usually games that came out in the last 5 or so yrs) the game doesn't do anything todays games don't"

Thus they completely miss the fact that the reason many people like a game is probably because it did what the games people like today do, & did them about 10-15 yrs before anything made now.

Flandre Scarlet, she's cute, she's colorful, she can blow up entire cities, she's also a vampire. Start running sparklepants.

I noticed when a HD console FPS comes out, we tend to call it overrated.

Probably the best definition for NLife purposes, here.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

That is absolute bogus. Everyone knows microwaves are mostly boring and generic. Whatever happened to grilling over a bonfire? I remember the golden ages of cooking, such nostalgia.

MIckey I agree with Tasuki's post, but you do bring up stuff like Uncharted 2. Now that game did do something special since you used it as example because of the high end design of the people, terrain, very unique movie/book level quality story, high grade acting to drive it, and the rest. Sure it borrows elements, nearly nothing is much on that unique end anymore say like a 'Flower' game was, but it did a lot to move ahead. Then you get other generation level stuff that I tagged in the big 'overrated' thread like FF7 and Chrono Trigger, which truly did nothing. FF7 was the resultant orgy of massive Sony Media advertising and FF fan lust of it going to a CD all compounded by an entire new generation and style of gamer Sony brought in that gulped it down as their first RPG causing a wave insanity since making the lame claim there's FF7, and everything else which in almost all cases can never rationally be reasoned out as it did nothing but be a mediocre mass market RPG. Chrono Trigger was much the same for the SNES, at least it used a rarely used time travel element, and it used some of the highest end audio/visual the SNES could do (even FF7 was middling on the visual end of things on its release but yes audio was out there!.)

It always seems to be stuff people latch onto a bit too much to the point that even if they know deep down it's just another game, another average game, it's their game, their wunderlust, and they'll irrationally argue to death it is best of all. the perfect case study online of it -- GAMEFAQS.COM's bi-tri whatever it is yearly character/game battle. FF7 tends to top it if not win it enough, and then you get your Mario's, Link(Zeldas), and a few others but while those did break serious ground and may deserve the nod a bit more, other stuff that tends to at times doesn't and just reading the insane rabid frothing stupidity written in their boards thread bound to the voting is more than enough example of the effect.

I don't know anything about Uncharted but by the definition you gave it doesn't sound like it did anything special, it just sounds like it had a tone of things that were special from other games, put them together, but better.

You know what games I think honestly made something special?

That one Radar Game
Pong
Space Invaders
Pacman
Donkey Kong
Super Mario Bros
Megaman
Super Mario RPG (timed hits)

I'm missing a few... oh well.

I sometimes think things are overrated even though I like them. I enjoy them for what they are, but I still see the flaws.

I gotta agree with Kaiser, technically Uncharted did nothing special either. It was just a good game that was executed very well, just like Chrono Trigger and FF7. Not to take away from them of course, since I still don't believe a game has to do anything new to be great, so long as it's executed well enough. I'm just saying that by your own definition, Uncharted is "nothing special."

I will agree that FF7 is overrated, if only because a lot of its fans seem to see some grand unique feature that I apparently missed. I still love it, but only because it did what I felt it set out to do - to be a very good and very accessible RPG.
