Formerly load times, but that was only really during the 5th gen and 6th gen.

Having the "Erase Save Data" button too easy to get to, Rhythm Heaven DS was the worst offender of this and I lost my data, at least I played the heck out of it first though.

Not very common in most games, but when me & my brother were playing through Knack on his PS4, very often they would give us like weird 1 second long cutscenes when we enter a new segment of a level that just shows everything slightly more detailed as Knack makes a slight more dramatic entrance. It was very annoying and pointless.

Easily the fanboys. The whole culture around videogames is crazy and some people ruin it completely! Why is it impossible to love all systems like I do? Or Atleast not be completely biased towards one. A good example of the dark videogame culture happened recently when Gamespot announced Link Between Worlds their game of the year. So many people went crazy and declared Nintendo a kids company and Gamespot (the whole site somehow) a troll. Thing is, all those people becoming crazy out and saying The Last of Us craps all over Zelda haven't even played a Link Between Worlds! How can you be so biased and ignorant as to hate a game you have never played? That's taking things too far and it's an ugly stain on this industry.

Ok, rant over. Answer: fanboys.

I disagree quite a bit on the lives thing. Remember how bad Kirby's Epic Yarn was trashed for being too easy?

I have to stop you there. No one said that you should never die in a game. We're talking about being forced to replay a entire level just because one section of the level gave you too much trouble, or worse, having to replay 4 levels just because one spot caused you to die too many times, or worse yet, having to replay the entire game just because of one single solitary misjudged jump. That is unnecessary. That is beyond frustrating. That is actively punishing players for having the GALL to play a game they payed hard earned money for. That is unacceptable.

Yes, I know. But when my kid is learning the color wheel (and he enjoys this game), it's messes with his head!

(He's playing it right now next to me, so that's what brought it to mind.)

Haha, true. Now that I think about it, that messes with just about everybody. I know it's probably about wavelengths and stuff, but still, it just goes against everything you've ever learned about light and color.

Uninteresting, unskippable cutscenes. I'm not against cutscenes or story in games in general, as it can add a lot to the experience. My problem is with when whatever dialogue or cutscenes are interrupting the gameplay just aren't interesting or entertaining, can't be skipped or are unnessicarily slow to skip, and they're in the game more than twice. And dreaded tutorial cutscenes. Or when cutscenes just last too long.

And by extension, what @MrWalkieTalkie said. I don't understand why stuff like that is even a thing in games. You should never need to watch a cutscene for a simple action like jumping down a cliff, which you know you can do by common logic, that's just stupid. If it's once, I can easily excuse it, but when it shows up a few times then I start to get really bored. It doesn't come up often in games but when it does, it can almost ruin a game single-handedly.

Because of this, Rufus from Skylanders is my single most hated character in video game history. Every time you enter the game he gives you an unskippable lecture about the bonus content, and he just repeats one of the same five lectures whenever you go back to the hub level again. It doesn't sound that bad, but trust me, it's really, truly bad.

I hate it when games that I expect to deliver a high level of atmosphere and that have a reputation for their high atmospheric level have designs that cause that aspect of locations to fall short. Big offenders of this are the Metroid Prime Trilogy games in my experience, especially Metroid Prime which is often touted as having the best atmosphere of not just Prime Series but the Metroid Series overall. I think the aspect of Metroid Prime's atmosphere that annoys me the most is that death is almost completely exclusive to Space Pirate bases, yet the "Great Poison" is a disaster to the whole ecosystem of Tallon IV based on what the game tells me in lore. It's a major inconsistency with the experience and makes the design of the game come off as very unpolished not even being aware of its own material. Fans keep complaining about "show, don't tell" yet they love Metroid Prime, which addresses a crisis in its lore but fails to really showcase that in its regions.

I also really don't like the choice Retro Studios has made to name locations as access routes to other locations. If they're not using room naming to take the opportunity to make unique atmospheres per named room, then don't bother naming them. A name is meant for a sense of identity in my opinion, so having two locations almost sharing names as back-to-back rooms creates a repetitive sense of atmosphere beyond the theme that should be used instead to create something more meaningful for that specific location. Do this so much during the course of the game, as the Retro Primes do, and I find it difficult to call any of those three games atmospherically deep rather they're shallow and repetitive in that regard. Fortunately in the case of Echoes and Corruption, Retro did learn how to convey a sense of death within the actual environments which I felt greatly improved their atmospheric experience in comparison to Prime despite continuing its poor sense of location naming. Corruption did miss an opportunity taking us to the wastelands of Bryyo though that it emphasized in lore, which ultimately makes Echoes my favorite of the Prime Trilogy atmospherically.

I would prefer room naming in all Metroid games, as I want to see a focus on making meaningful atmospheres per location while still maintaining the feel of a region. If a developer isn't capable of that though, and so far it's only been NST to get it right, I don't want them to bother. I'd much rather have a Metroid game not create a expectation than create one and fall short of it.

I give this dood my complete support and a resounding "Seconded". Getting stuck at a point of no return without being able to grind or buy items = not cool.

i agree and what annoys me the most is in some games randomly freezes, not crashes, but freezes. im looking at you ac III (wii u), especially when you are in the middle of something like hunting or fighting and you havent saved and it just freezes which you have to start all over. another annoying thing is forced loosing, especially when you cant tell if your supposed to loose or not. im looking at some of you rpg games

Well, the first thing that comes to mind is acquiring the Ikachan Medal in Cave Story. I had to reset the game and run through half of the Waterway just to try again.

Totally agree with everything said above, as that happens to me too, but the first thing I thought of when i saw the thread title is when I collect 99% of notes in Banjo-Kazooie, and then die, forcing me to start over. I get so frustrated that I just turn the console off at that point and play something else for awhile.
