Topic: What is happening to this place??

I am sorry if this is the wrong section for this or if there is a thread like this already. I am at school with limited time on typing this out on my 3DS so bear with me.

Anyway I have been noticing lately alot of rude, users attacking one another in several threads today and its been happening alot lately. Now when I first came to these forums the reason I stuck around was because the community was so friendly and there really was no attacking in threads or rudeness. So what happened????

Now I know I have had my moments cause of a bad day or not feeling good or what not and I do apologize if I have been that way. But honestly I am starting to see that this place is starting to turn into so many other forum places that I have left. In truth I'd hate to see these forums turn into those kind of forums so thats why I am asking whats going on here???

Probably because this site is getting more popular, thus more trolls.

Why do people point to their wrists when asking for the time, but don't point to their crotch when they ask where the bathroom is?

Why is this forum of people less??

But seriously, when a community grows, there is gonna be a few rotten apples in the bunch. It happens.

I too have noticed that, lately. It's sad, really.

Yep, this place has been getting a lot more argumentative in the past few months than when I first discovered the place. Let's just hope there isn't a massive influx of new users from the NL page on the eShop over the next week or so that would only exacerbate the problem.

Exactly.

No matter how pretty you make the cave, the trolls will still come in.

99% of the members here are great and it's just the 1% that likes to cause problems. I have no problem calling someone out if they're being rude - I've had a lot of experience with bad users at many other message boards - and I'm sure the same can be said of other members and of the mod team, who do a great job trying to keep the place tidy.

This is a fantastic place and I certainly hope that the bad members don't start to bring the good ones down any time soon.

Trolls are certainly bad for everyone involved including the staff
It is every website owner's worst nightmare to have their website overrun by trolls
But the NL forums still aren't anywhere near as bad as IGN,or Gamefaqs

@Nin-pal LOL

I do agree with Tasuki, for I also have noticed some unkind behavior here and there and it so troubling because that is why I chose to hang out here because I loved the warmness and friendliness of it all but I am a bit troubled by the rudeness I have seen on many message boards and I simply take it as a fulfillment of the Bible's prophecy of man's hearts growing cold and heartless towards the end of time. Another sign of the times. However we can fix these problems as the Bible does say that if His people who are called by His Name will humble themselves and pray that He will heal their world. 2 Chronicles 7:14

It's up to us to make our planet a better place. I rather make the world better instead of going to Hell in a Handbasket.

However, it is true that as a site gets more exposure it will get crappy members with it.

Still, I think that if the trolls and flamebait is ignored they will mosey on out of the picture because we all know that losers and haters can't stand to be ignored. If you ignore a bully than he'll be forced to funk off.

Maybe the whole Wii and 3DS drought is putting some Nintendo fans in a bitter mode. Which makes them easy bait for trolls.

The same as others have said...the more a community grows, the more it (unfortunately) attracts trolls. I'm guilty of posting some provocative comments myself but I don't post on the forums here often (I honestly don't like getting into arguements with/upsetting people if I can help it), I normally stick to just commenting on articles and reviews on the main page.

I do still read the threads though and I still think that the vast majority of members are decent people and it's a friendly place/ There's no popular forum on the internet that hasn't been infected by trolls yet (or will be)....you just have to learn to ignore them. Some people are so disenchanted with their sad 'real' world lives that they enjoy trying to wind up other people from behind the anonymity of a nickname and avatar. They eventually just go away if you don't feed them with any ammunition.

As others have stated, the bigger it gets, the more trolls come in. This may also mean an increase in moderators too... TBD can't do it all.

I haven't noticed too much bickering, but I don't swim around all that many threads to find much of it. The mods/admins will sort it out eventually, it just takes time to find a good reason to kick 'em out.

you'll get user you wont like just like you get people you wont like and wont like you irl, not a lot that can be done about it really if you come across offensive posts of course you can always report it and help make the community a better place by helping remove such content, of course not all disagreeable content is necessarily report worthy even if it is annoying and if you feel the visiting the site is becoming more of a pain than anything then taking a break can really help, I mean I should know I've left the site a couple of times but felt much better for it a few days or weeks away from it all then come back hopefully in a better frame of mind it works for me anyway.

you say this like you think you'd have better luck with someone else, Demon. I can assure you that you won't. there are enough of us with mod/admin privs hanging around to handle whatever arises within a reasonable amount of time. :3

that said, 'what's going on here' is, as has already been mentioned, the fact that NL has grown at breakneck speed this year. Our userbase is nearly 30,000 strong, and there's bound to be at least one or two people hanging around that you don't like or who grate on your nerves. combine that with new consoles launching and stir in some strong or particularly abrasive (but otherwise acceptable) opinions... people start to get oversensitive and angry. this kind of thing happens, and the only thing we can ask you to do is just report a user if they insult you and move on. when you report them, we're alerted to the problem(s) and can move in to check things out for ourselves (and subsequently keep an eye on people). don't rise to their bait, don't sink to their level. generally the truly bad apples will wind up hanging themselves, we just have to give them enough rope first (in the form of a fair shot at getting their act together and cutting the crap as requested, which takes time).

if it's really starting to get to you, Tasuki, just take a break for a while — Reala did it recently, and he came back all refreshed with his wit as sparkling as ever. we'll be here when you get back, I promise :3

I haven't noticed people being more rude than usual, myself. It's certainly a lot better than the entirety of 2009, that's for sure. Still, as others have said, it's probably just because this place is getting bigger.

Pretty sure one of the most obnoxious arguments on this forum was the NPC thread from the first few months this site was open. This is not new; it's human behavior and it existed in similar form pre-NL. Laugh, ignore, report, take a break — do what you need to do. You can't force smiles, hugs, and understanding on everyone.
