Excuse me if this is already being talked about elsewhere, I just didn't know where to find it.
Also, this post is in reference of Nintendo of America. I don't have any knowledge of what Nintendo of Europe or Japan or how they are handling things.
Okay, with that out of the way... what in the world is going on with Nintendo lately? It seems that they keep messing up, here and there and it's making consumers frustrated at the very least. Let me count the ways they've messed up.

  • Low stock, on various things like the gamecube controller adapter, various Amiibo, limited editions, etc. Certainly they can see that the demand for these things are much greater than what they've been delivering, right? Is this about them wanting to turn a profit this year? I don't know if it's working or not but consumers are getting fed up.
  • Youtube content ID. I thought this problem has been solved already but apparently not. Youtubers like Angry Joe are still getting copyright claims from Nintendo.
  • And of course, the one on everybody's minds right now... Only getting the New 3DS XL in North America while the rest of the world gets both models.

So, my question is, what is going on with Nintendo right now? Are they going to do anything to fix things with the North American market, or are they just going to keep fading until the pull out completely, like they did with the Brazilian market? Okay okay, I don't think they'd do anything THAT drastic, but they certainly have me worried right now. Thoughts?

Ultimately NoA gets orders from Nintendo HQ. Maybe they wanted to but weren't allowed to sell the normal 3ds. They underestimated the demand for Amiibos. Youtube content ID system is broken. Nintendo is also extremely cautious about youtube thanks to their culture. Sony doesn't seem to be affected by said culture but then again their Sony america branch has always been free to do whatever....

Youtube has their own problems and that's got nothing to do with Nintendo whatsoever.

The thing is though, that NoA decides what games should be localized to the west and what shouldn't be. So Its a matter of NoA's decision and not Nintendo's.

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

Limited editions are limited editions. They're supposed to have low stock. Otherwise, it would be false advertising. The Gamecube controller adapter DOES have ridiculous popularity considering what it does. I would be wary about creating too much stock of an item that can only be used for one game, is completely optional, and has several alternatives that work just as well available. Amiibo were initially a gamble, and now that they appear to be stable new stock should appear regularly until sales drop off.

I can't speak for your other issues, but content ID implies to me more that Nintendo does NOT intend to fade from the region. New 3DS XL thing is definitely weird, though.

They pulled out of the Brazil market at it had massive import taxes and I'm pretty sure limited editions are meant to have low stock levels.

See if you can predict how many amiibo to produce of each variety, knowing that demand for each figure will vary across markets and from store to store. You can't so you will have to guesstimate. And you don't want them to end up in a landfill so you will have to be careful not to produce too many.

Same thing applies with the GC controller adapter. It's clear that the market for that is limited - not every Wii U owner will want one - but impossible to know how big it is until you start selling them. And when the first batch runs out, it will take some time to restock.

As the New 3DS XL being the only one available in NA maybe sales of the 3DS XL have been better then the original 3DS? I agree it kinda of baffles me too either that or maybe Japan thinks us North Americans have big hands or something.

As far as the GC adapter go I am guessing that someone didn't do their research correctly. Cause if they did they would have seen that everyone and their mother wanted to be able to use the GC controllers for Smash on the Wii U.

As far as Amiibos go again it seems that they got their research mixed up and of coarse the scalpers didn't help either. The probably thought the big name characters like Mario and Link would be the big sellers so naturally they produce more of them then say Villager or Little Mac and then the darn scalpers took over from there. For some reason as of lately people are thinkng that alot of these "limited edtion or low quantity games and video game novitiates will be worth something and that they can make a quick buck off of us gamers out there. Sadly I dont see anything fixing that unless companies like Nintendo ramp up production and make more thus flooding the market either that or go after eBay and shut it down or prevent scalpers from selling current gen games and gaming stuff.

As far as Youtube goes I have no idea with that it might be Youtube it might be Nintendo or a combination of both.

None of that is hard to understand. There's nothing of interest or out of the ordinary "up" with Nintendo.

They are a conservative company that operates differently from the corporations you are used to in North America. US corporations on average have 7 year business plans, traditional Japanese corps have 250 year plans. US corps chase windfalls by over producing and selling as much as possible before slashing and burning. Nintendo prefers to sell 100% of what it produces. US companies operate on covering losses, Nintendo operates on not having losses.

The normal 3ds sold a third as well as the 3ds xl in America. Bigger screens traditionally sell much better in America, no matter the device. Why waste the resources shipping a product over here that won't sell as well as your other option? People who wanted the normal one will just get the bigger one, so Nintendo loses nothing.

They saw their brand shrink drastically in 2013 and everything they are producing now is based off that smaller audience. All of sudden they are blowing up and the best brand around so they need time to reasses and adjust to that. Their software sales are up 90%. Do you think last years fans are buying 9 of every game or are there 9 new fans for every 1 they had last year?

I disagree, those who didn't want Xenoblade Chronicles 3D will probably choose the "stick with the 3DS they already own option" hence making Nintendo lose a lot.

It really feels like Nintendo is slowly pulling away from the North American audience, just cause they really don't seem to understand what we actually want for games or products.

I was planning to get a new 3DS, but I knew the new 3ds was going to be coming sometime soon so I waited for that (I skipped the Super Smash Bros 3DS XL and NES Edition 3DS XL in favour of waiting), and I couldn't wait to pick up my new 3ds and be able to customize it with faceplates and such, then the latest Nintendo Direct happened, and I found out my waiting was very much pointless -- Two things that they said during it REALLY bug me 1/ We will only receive the New 3DS XL and 2/ It won't even come with the most basic accessory just to keep the system going, a freakin' ac adapter!!! >< That's about as stupid as selling a brand new tv and saying you need to buy the remote seperate -- The other thing that bugged me after the Direct was looking at Ebgames Canada website for the prices, and it's NOT nice at all. For the system alone, $229.99 CAD, plus a official ac adapter for $20 CAD, plus you`ll of course need a game which go for $40-45 CAD, so for the most basic of stuff to buy this system, you`ll be spending $290-295, ONLY $5 CHEAPER THEN THE WII U!!!! (and the Wii U comes with two games, the stand set etc. all you need to start).

My buttom line is, Nintendo of America is making ALL the wrong moves lately and obviously has no clue what there North American market truly wants. I suggest Nintendo start to learn to listen to it`s NA gamers a little more and actually make more of a attempt over here. It`s not good when you mention Nintendo around where I live and people look at you disgusted like you just said Sega was the best gaming company ever when they released the Saturn

And that if the PS1 didn't exist, the ones you're treating the best outside your homeland would've said exactly that.
