Hey guys, just so you know, Waltz won't be responding to any more of your questions.
Why did this happen?
Maybe because this turned into a "Let's prove Waltz is wrong" thread again.
Really? I thought he/she did a solid job of making and explaining the intended point. Since I was one of the initiators that wanted to discuss this I can say, at least for me, that was not my intent in bringing up this thread. Now whether or not it turned into that I suppose is up for debate.
Most ignorance is vincible ignorance. We don't know because we don't want to know.
@FOREST_RANGER - Sure. As long as people want to use the thread, I'll leave it open. @Morphtoid - I did not create this thread to prove Waltz wrong. I saw his comment, didn't understand it, and he said he would debate it, so I made the thread. I just wanted to understand what he was saying better. I don't know anything about his previous forum history, so it wasn't like I was trying to start anything.
I foresee what you'll do there.

A fanboy is a derogatory term for fanatics found in nerd culture.
Here are some examples:
If you think $599 U.S. dollars was a good price for a PS3, you're a fanboy.
If you think arcade ports are better on the iPad, you're a fanboy.
If you think video games are art, you're a fanboy.

How does this one work out in your mind? I believe video game are an art and yet I don't claim being a fan solely to any one genre/style of gaming. Or any one form of art for that matter.

Since I believe that "fanboy" is a subjective term, I will leave my post as a (hopefully) fairly developed opinion of the word.
From what I read on the internet, fanboy abstractly translates to an individual who has some sort of obsession or connection to something. That is my definition of fanboy, for it is as objective as I can make it to be. However, the word concerns me because it can be conceived in many ways. In other words, people define the term further and give it many qualities, which will then be associated with someone. The qualities attributed to the word can differ person-among-person, and the qualities associated depends on how one was brought up in life (personal, social, professional, etc.). Sometimes, the person referring the term to someone may be trying to instill quilt, oppression, superiority, or all of them. Other times, maybe it's used to be reasonably critical of someone. Whatever qualities is used, the common one given is obsession to the extent of causing issues.
Now, let me once again bring up my definition of fanboy: a person who has some sort of obsession or connection to something. I think it almost sounds the same as the term "fan." Therefore, I don't see much justification in using the term (FROM MY PERSPECTIVE). You see, if any of you have read my past posts, I try to be neutral on important topics.
Here's another reason why I'm not compelled to use it: it carries some not-so-friendly connotations. It sounds derogatory and paternalistic. The term "boy" is associated with young children, who are inexperienced with life; they don't know much. American online society chose to give the word unfriendly connotations as witnessed in many tech/game press sites. It just doesn't seem right to paternalize and label those people as "fanboys" when I am just as human as them.
So when I reference to the people who are called "fanboys," I connect an adjective to the word "fan" and its related siblings. By doing that, I directly describe the qualities of that person:
unreasonable fan
naive fan
unrealistic fan
optimistic fan
loyal fan
inconsiderate fan
elitist fan
etc.
For example, I interpret WhiteKnight's conception of fanboy as someone who only likes a company for their own interests, and are ignorant. I would call that either a picky fan, or maybe greedy fan. I can also use a double adjective like "self-centered, ignorant fan." If they must be elaborated, I'll briefly do it.
And so that is what I think of fanboy. I know it takes the fun out of communication sometimes, but I like to be considerate of one's well-being.
I see a "fanboy" as someone who is so obsessed with a certain topic that they defend even the most glaring weaknesses, and cannot accept any alternatives.
