if you plan to go to college in the US, foreign language is damn-near mandatory. I couldn't find many/any degree plans that didn't require through spanish 3 or 4 (or any other language, obviously, although in Texas taking spanish is pretty much expected) Spanish = the reason I didn't finish in 4 years.
Thank you US education system for not stressing foreign language education when we're young enough to actually learn it.

I took four courses of French as an undergrad and am taking my second Spanish right now to prepare for a graduate program in English I start this fall, where if I go on to the doctorate program I'll be expected to have fluency in one foreign language and at least reading proficiency in another.
How the heck I will accomplish this in so little time, I have no idea. I can absorb grammar and idiomatic expressions very quickly, but to digest a decent vocabulary that you can call "fluency" means learning probably over a thousand words.
Don't they know I have video games to play? I don't have time for this, and my brain is just not suited to memorizing random combinations of phonemes anymore.
Spanish ought to be required at least as early as middle school. 34 million Americans speak it as a primary language, for Pete's sake. One or two years in high school won't cut it, and by college it's pretty much too late for most students.

Start playing some RPGs or other text-intensive titles in the target language, via an emulator if necessitate by region-locking. I used to do that from time to time with German.
Although, to be honest, the best way is to regularly read an article or two in an online news source from the language in question, then try to watch a film or TV show as well from time to time.

I used to play XIII (GCN FPS) in French, actually, but never an RPG or other text-heavy game. I've been meaning to try the French and Spanish translations (and maybe others) of Mother 3 when they're ready, which I think will be good since I'm so familiar with the game. Also, I tend to set most of my electronic devices to French, though that only does so much.
If I had the money to, I'd import an RPG from time to time, but I've got too many other games to play without taking such a gamble.
