Topic: What does Nintendo need to do to get their crowd back?

Hey there.

A couple of weeks ago I opened a topic about how it seems like many people considered 2019 a somewhat lackluster year for Nintendo, despite all their quality releases, even by their own fans and that left me quite puzzled (I mean, if a year in which Super Mario Maker 2, Cadence of Hyrule, Fire Emblem Three Houses, Astral Chain, Link's Awakening and Luigi's Mansion 3, as well as other minor releases would be lackluster, I can't immagine what a company needs to do to consider a year great. Really). I mean, Switch and all of those games were greatly reviewed and sold a lot last year, and I find quite head scratching that someone, would consider this a bad year for Nintendo.

At this, I think a question is pretty much due: what do you think Nintendo needs to do, to get more appreciation by the mass? Because honestly after this the only way I can see more respect for Nintendo is for Metroid Prime 4, Bayonetta 3 and Breath of the Wild 2 to be released at the same time and delivering their hype. If this doesn't work I really don't have Hope's for Nintendo gaining back appreciation...

What they need to do?

Simple.
For me, Nintendo Switch needs more :
1. Girlie games such as Pika Pika Nurse, Style Savvy, Model Debut Nicola, Waku Waku Sweets.
2. Cute Cartoonish games such as New Super Lucky Tale, Portal Knights, Captain Toad, Moving Out, Story of Seasons Friends of Mineral Town, etc.
3. Quirky games such as 1-2-Switch, LABO, Miitopia, Tomodachi Life, etc.
4. Boxing / Kickboxing games. Until today, there is (almost) NO developer want to create proper Cartoonish Boxing / Kickboxing games on consoles.
5. Digital games goes physical. I want to own the games in physical, not in digital format.

More games in the first half of the year, 2019 Switch's biggest flaw was very little happening before Mario Maker 2 (otherwise it was a fantastic year for Switch). Given we didn't get a general Direct in January I think this year may be similar to 2019 with the main 1st party games in the first half being Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX, Animal Crossing New Horizons and Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition (guessing a May/June release).

Simple bring back 3rd Party games and series that they had during the SNES/NES Era. Stuff like Madden, Final Fantasy to get those people back. Games like GTA, and Red Dead need to come to Switch that really the only way they can get people back.

Alot of my friends went to Sony and MS when Nintendo stopped offering games like Final Fantasy and Madden on their systems.

@BlackKnight93 honestly I think you have blown this way out of proportion in your head, I don’t know anyone who classed 2019 as a lacklustre year for Nintendo! If anything they really grew their fan base for the switch in record proportions. You reading a small MINORITY people’s opinions in not reality, the reality is they have got their fan base back and more since the wii u. Software is selling by record numbers, including hardware.
In other words Nintendo don’t need to do anything except to keep doing what they have been, which is constantly churning out games of the same quality or above as the last 3 years.

Frankly I don't know what you are talking about. Nintendo has more attention right now than they have had in a long time.

Games like Luigi's Mansion 3 and FE:3H are drawing in completely new audiences, and Ring Fit Adventure made a sizable splash in the casual market.

The only thing Nintendo didn't have in 2019 was a massive game with overwhelmingly positive reception, which they had in 2017 and 2018, and that's going to happen for every company. Remember that Sony's big holiday game for 2013 was Little Big Planet 3.

The only thing wrong with 2019 for me wasn't the releases themselves, but the release schedule. We had droughts, then periods with an overwhelming amount of releases. September, for example, had a crazy amount of good games all jammed into that one month.
Ideally, these would have been spread out more evenly over the course of the entire year.

Switch has been selling very well and games have been topping and frequenting top ten charts on a regular basis. Nintendo has long since stopped trying to directly compete and "beat" competition from Sony and MS. Nintendo does it's own thing and does it very well right now.

They confirmed, back before the Switch even launched, that they were selling the Switch for a profit - unlike other console launches where the companies were forced to rely on software sales to make up the difference.

I don't think the Switch or Nintendo itself did poorly in 2019. But the key to their continued success is the keep the games flowing. Back in 2017 they had, for like 8 or 9 months, one fairly major release every month with a bunch of smaller releases in between. They need to aim for that tempo, either releasing their own titles, or pushing big name 3rd parties out on the months they can't release something big themselves. They can't let there be big dry spells without significant releases.

I think they can fill gaps with the remaining, but still sought after, Wii U ports - but they need to avoid releasing too many, too close together - like they did early last year. And they can even throw in some older ports from Wii or Gamecube with a simple coat of higher resolution paint and call it good and people will buy them, and the flow of releases will continue. Which is the key.

Software sells hardware. Have the games and have them consistently, and the rest will fall into place.

To make a comparison, the 3DS didn't finally get set aside until regular releases finally stopped. Post Switch still saw a big Pokemon, Kirby and Metroid game drop on 3DS and during those months, the 3DS was still selling well. Once that ended, the 3DS dropped off the face of the earth in terms of sales.

Nintendo really has a winner with the Switch. The portability is the card their holding and it’s what separates it from the pack.

We all know there is going to be quality Nintendo titles, but one factor that is getting the console excitement is third parties becoming interested. The Mario and Zelda fans are already sold, but don’t underestimate the impact of getting Diablo 3 and having stuff like Divinity Original Sin on the go as well. There are probably many PC owners who picked up a Switch just for that.

Stuff like Astral Chain and all the indie game support also turns heads and convinces people to buy a Switch as well.

I’m firmly in the “Mario and Zelda are on it so I’ll buy in” camp, but having the variety there on the Switch is encouraging and means they are reaching out to consumers who aren’t specifically sold on Nintendo franchises.

I think for the most part anyway, the Nintendo crowd has a Switch. I don't think Nintendo needs to win anyone back per say, they already have compared to Wii U numbers and by looking at Switch numbers themselves. Most of the big Nintendo franchises are represented in Switch, with some new IPs and third party exclusives tossed in too. Of course we still don't have the likes of Paper Mario or Pikmin, and Prime 4 is a ways off, but if the rumours are true, we'll at least get a new PM, Pikimin 3 port and 2D Metroid.

Not to mention the quality of the current Nintendo offerings, BotW, Odyssey, Smash Ultimate, Xenoblade 2, Luigis Mansion 3 and Fire Emblem TH are considered by most to be some of the best games in their respective series And sold accordingly.

And course there's the dormant Nintendo IPs like Golden Sun, F-Zero and Wave Race, but how many modern Nintendo fans have held back on a Switch completely due these games absence?

@GrailUK
Someone was anxious for not getting decent Switch games from last year.
He just expected the games such as Western Open world Action games or games called big franchises.
If there were a lot of games he didn't like, he complained.

@Deathwalka Sadly I do instead, and several of them come from group that are supposed to be Nintendo fans... I'd like to mark that "are supposed" part... just yesterday I went on a Discord group asking how they felt about Nintendo in 2019 outside of the disappointing new Pokemon. They all answered with "lackluster" or "disappointing" something that really made myself scratching my head...

@BlackKnight93 after seeing Nintendo make a billion dollars from mobile, I hope they remember the console crowd.

I had to do multiple double takes when i saw how much mobile pulled in the other day. It was staggering.

Nintendo doesn't need to get back their crowd, but I'd be a liar if I said I didn't miss how they used to interact with the fans back in the WiiU years.

Again, I have no clue what you're talking about. Nintendo is doing very well right now in terms of what the general public thinks. I've seen people I've never known to have a Nintendo console get a Switch, in addition to some who hadn't played Nintendo in years.

Yes, there are people like me who are not getting much out of the Switch. I admit I have specific gaming tastes. The only games in 2019 that were on my radar at all were Luigi's Mansion 3 and Pokemon Sword/Shield. The problem is I know that in the past Nintendo has delivered for me a lot more than they do now (Nintendo 64 era, GCN era, the 3DS era post-first year). No Switch year has personally lived up to the hype at all.

If 2020 gets Animal Crossing New Horizons, BOTW2, and the rumored return-to-form Paper Mario, I think everyone here might see an entirely new side of me. But one of those is a rumor that seems a pipe dream, and BOTW2 is not guaranteed for 2020.

It just all comes down to my opinions. Hype for Nintendo is still strong in general outside of me. I don't know what you want.

@La-weejee I can't tell if you're trolling or not...

@Harmonie Fine. But just don't go all over the place spreading hate over Switch only because YOU don't like those games, alright?

@La-weejee I'm not, I just can't stand people who complain and ruin reputations only for fun.
