Topic: What do you want to see from Nintendo's next console?

I really want to see Nintendo revisit the idea of Motion Controls, I never saw Nintendo's path on motion control complete, as their accuracy never reached a point where it was perfect. This limited it's use in games, forcing them not to require precise controls. But unlike most people act, it's the tech, not the control scheme. So I'd like to see Nintendo make them far more robust. If they could filter out small motions that are made accidentally, if they could make them work 99% of the time, I think they could see an explosion of the Wii's magnitude again.

I really think they should bail on the Dual Screen console idea, as I don't see it going very far with new gameplay ideas, and the last thing I want is a console-handheld fusion, as it will be an expensive addition that really doesn't add much to gameplay.

Better price, more power and no motion controls. Hahaha.

When did the Wii U come out? Eighteen months ago?

Yet, we're already discussing something that may or may not release in five years?

Just for you.

graphics and power that are at the same level as Sonys and Microsofts next systems. Nintendo has to do this to remain competitive.

Because that's all we need, another PS/Xbox clone...

Graphics and power don't mean anything. The Wii was ''underpowered'', yet sold more than 100 million units, whereas the GameCube was quite powerful for its time and age, and well, we all know how that ended up.

A system that isn't behind PS and MS... I'd like their next system to feel like it can compete with the others. Also I'd like to see how Nintendo handles a system with no gimmicks again, or at least a system not centered entirely on a gimmick.

@iKhan I really like the idea of the Nintendo Fusion. 3.5+ years from now, a handheld/home console hybrid would be a very smart move, especially considering the trend away from home consoles. It'll also help bolster their 3rd party. Honestly, every problem the Wii U has right now could probably be solved, if it were fused with the 3DS (which I imagine is the idea.)

@wariowarewolf Honestly, the price is just fine. But the power and such should at least be capable of what the others are capable of. (If for no other reason than to make 3rd parties look for a better excuse to not develop for Nintendo.)

@Chrono_Cross It's not like Nintendo isn't already thinking about their next console. They go right back into console development as soon as they leave it behind. There's no harm in speculation, so long as it isn't follow with "DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!"

@JaredJ Nintendo hasn't been competitive since the GameCube came out. They've made it very clear that they don't consider Sony or Microsoft as competition and aim for an entirely different field.

@Octane Nice try, but think again. Power and graphics do actually mean something. The problem is that it doesn't make a game good or bad by default. Unfortunately, the gaming scene will always be attached to their arbitrary numbers and forget what those numbers represent. It's just the potential of the console. Nothing more. What matters is what people do with that potential.

@BandG Why do we always act like there's a linear scale? Can't those of us that enjoy Nintendo's unique ideas and designs just enjoy it while those of us that want an industry standard go and get an industry standard?

@UGXwolf
I'm not saying there is anything wrong with being different, and i don't want it to be like MS and PS, I just want it to be able to be compared (for lack of a better word). It's fine if they have a gimmick, but I'd just like to see how they handle without it, because clearly this gimmick is not working for them (not that it's a bad gimmick). The Wii U does not feel like a console to me, it feels more like a line of games (IDK why), but when i think of Wii U I think of its games, not the console. I don't like the console interface, it isn't something that i like to look at or browse, but I've yet to be disappointed by any of its games. Just an opinion honestly.

Did you feel clever when you decided to reply with this? Maybe NintendoLife should implement a better search function so we don't get duplicates like this. It'd be nice to filter specifically forum posts.

@UGXwolf. This problem with this is the same as the problem with the Wii U. It will be expensive, and would only be a convenience, not a change for gameplay. When making a console, the creator needs to manage their costs, and with Nintendo, the cost cap is low <$350. Including something as expensive as the fusion concept would mean cutting back on something else, likely something that is actually useful in gameplay. Maybe power, maybe an innovative control scheme, maybe an innovative online feature, maybe something else.

Also, one of the key reasons Nintendo is dominating Sony in the handheld space right now is because console games are very different from handheld games. No one wants to play a full Uncharted game on a handheld, that's why no one wants a Vita.

Well, the Wii U still has plenty of gas left in the tank, in my opinion, but no harm in talking about the next console. Without a doubt, Nintendo already is.

  • Continue the focus on control options. Maybe make a more traditional control style the default, but include options and support for second screen, motion controls, and whatever else.
  • Greatly improved online infrastructure and store. As a Wii U and PS3 owner, using the PSN is just an entirely different level. Sony is leagues ahead of Nintendo in terms of their store, account system, and features.
  • For the love of God, don't put Wii in its name.
  • Make the hard drive upgradeable. External storage works fine too, but it's more cumbersome and harder to transport. In fact, ditch hard drives. Solid state is the way to go anyway.
  • Appropriately scaled power. I think Nintendo is doing the right thing in making a console that is less powerful than the competition, but at a more appealing price point. We're approaching a plateau in terms of graphical power anyway, and returns are greatly diminishing. It isn't worth doubling your budget and development time to squeeze in a few more pixels.
  • Continue with backwards compatibility and Virtual Console services.
  • Ability to store or stream movies, music, and pictures on the console.
  • Cross play with Nintendo's next handheld. Let the console stream games to the handheld, like the PS4/Vita's Remote Play, but also let you hook your handheld up to the console to play games on a TV (the handheld would need to be at least 540p for this to work).

Proper 3D (i.e Holograms).
FPGA based virtual console.
SSD or Cartridge (3DS Type is fine but if physical should exist it should be as good).
Same games across handheld and Home Console (They already are going to do that).
The best Technology IBM has. Ideally something that is really good but makes porting extremely difficult (Don't want least possible effort ports).
X68000/Saturn/Dreamcast VC
Revert to a reasonable difficulty GBA type level would be ok (Ideally somewhere in between NES and SNES).

If I wanted a system like an Xbox or a Playstation, I would buy one of those. I buy Nintendo partially cause they seem to be the only one of the three truly interested in doing new things.

Like some others have mentioned, I'd really like to see Nintendo take motion controls to the next level. A marriage between the Wiimote and a Kinect-like system could be really interesting. Kinect could have been interesting in and off itself if Microsoft had been interested in it beyond the "ME TOO!" factor. Nintendo treated their motion controls like a true controller. Microsoft treated theirs like a 3rd party peripheral.

Beyond that, I'd like to see them do some actual interesting gamepad. It CAN be a game changer if they would utilize it fully, but so far the number of titles that have really tested it are few and very far between.

To me, I love the dual screen gameplay. Why have one screen which does everything but makes it tedious rather than having two screens that does some of the things right?

I hate these guys claiming that there's nothing innovative with the dual screen gaming now. I'm pretty sure that if the 3DS did not have two screens and was way different like the Wii U, Nintendo would have lost a LOT MORE MONEY!!!!!!!!!!

Besides, they need to provide backwards compatibility so how can they remove dual screens? Also, one of my future games relies on dual screen gameplay so I really wish they don't remove dual screens ever!!!!!!!!!

I want a console I can buy off the shelf and start developing for without having to buy a devkit. Unity support out of the box is also a must.

I also want to be able to make games where people can connect their phones and tablets and handhelds to the console, since I really like the idea of second screen, but most of the ideas I come up with involve multiple second screens, rather than just the one gamepad that Wii U comes with.

I also hope they don't just make a more powerful Xbox One / PS4, as that'll get them nowhere fast

I'm not claiming, I'm observing. The full extent of the use of Dual Screen gameplay I've seen on a console was shown at E3 2012. That's kind of concerning.

@iKhan there are a lot of games that do make use of the dual screens creatively. You just need to find out about it.
