I'd actually say a lot of it's been inspired from the 16-bit era.
For some reason, players and developers have a strange fascination in it right now. Of course, not that I have a problem with it, I had a SNES too, but still, the sudden popularity is weird.
I'd say the theme is retro or 2D games. with Capcom releasing Megaman 9 nad 10, the VC, NSMBW, Sonic 4, FFIV:AY,Rayman Origins, and more, it seems the trend this gen is to emulate 8 and 16 bit gaming goodness with modern technology. (which is a good thing, btw )

Biggest trend of this generation is probably the inclusion of RPG elements in everything.
Then there's the focus on "cinematic", Hollywood-esque aesthetics and graphics. I despise when games use slow-motion and dramatic camera angles every third hit you make.
I'd also say nostalgia/retro throwbacks have been a big trend this generation . This generation's saving grace, perhaps.
Castle defenders: They aren't good enough for software but the downloadable games, unfortunately, I'm not a fan of those games Sports games to the max: Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Your Shape, NHL 2K10, NBA jam EA active Fifa Talking about the graphics: Everything I hear about today is the wii's bad graphics and the 3DS's good graphics and what not Life Style Games: Sims, Nintendogs, Kinectimals, Brain Age, and almost half of apple's apps.
Either motion controls, HD, Online, or DLC, none of which have been truly an important part of all of the consoles (yet.) Retro throwbacks seem to be all-the-rage these days, too.
GRAPHIC LOOK SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO REAL!!!! THIS GAME IS THE BEST EVER. seriously i ask this one kid at school if there was a game were all you do is sit around but the graphics were as real as they got would he buy it he actually said yes. O.0

Multiplayer and co-op. Seems like so many games this gen focus on these aspects, for better or worse; some shoehorned in (thinking Bioshock2, among others), some added excellently (NSMBWii, for example).
I'd dare call DLC a bad trend unless it's handled right. I've noticed in some cases DLC sucks up a quality team to work on stupid after the fact crap instead of putting all those good lost hours and effort towards a new adventure in gaming and that's a huge loss. The other bad one would be those jerks who make DLC, save it to your disc, then time release it like it's new because that's like buying a game for full price and then being told you only got 85% of it and you got to pay another $15 to get it all which is a scam. Some DLC is nice, but I don't think it's the huge trend here, motion control is simply since it took off so well the other guys are copycatting the idea to try and wiggle a little more market share into their direction.
