Yes but that doesn't change the fact that the PS3 (a current gen console) is going 3-D. The 3DS is next gen, sure, but the PS3 is not, which is proof that 3-D is this generation.

Download content to me seems to be this generation trend. It seems that nowadays every game has DLC whether its new levels, new character, or just new outfitts. It seems that no matter what genre of game it is the companies manage to add something later and charge a fee for it, and it seems that every company does it and has done it since the Wii, PS3, and 360 came out.
Motion control since everyone wants a piece, HD secondarily, and in third but well tied to first finding any reason not to release A grade material for the Wii hypocritically knocking it at every turn to only now suck up to the junk as someone else is doing it now.

Gotta agree with Tasuki. People tried 3D back in the day but it never caught on, so it's not like it's a brand new idea. I like the DLC idea personally. It's nice to enjoy a game for a month or so then get something new to keep the proverbial flame burning.

Gotta agree on that. As Stuffy said, people experimented with 3D in the day too, and some did motion too (some of them were actually decent aswell. There was that one with the "power field" that worked pretty well). It seems DLC is the new go-to for gaming. Which is fine, so long as the DLC wasn't already part of the game. Here's looking at you, Capcom
The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.

Same with motion control. I agree about DLC too, I like keeping the flame burning with extra content.
As for trends this gen.. I'd go with the inflation of review scores. Especially the extremely high inflation compared to that of PC games.
I know PC games have higher standards, but jeez. Pretty bad when four-five console games in a similar genre every year can score higher than an old PC game that was considered one of the best.
Reviewers nowadays hand out 100's as if it were nothin. Especially when it comes to PS3/360 games.

Yep I forgot about the experiments with 3D but now I remember Rad Racer with the 3D mode and the Virtual Boy which yes I do have one in storage. Also the motion control isnt new either you had both the Power Glove and U Force back in the day.
And I too have to agree with Stuffy about DLC keeping the game new and fresh. Thats one reason I have enjoyed MMORPGs like World of Warcraft and Everquest more than console games the past few years they are always updating and coming out with expansions for those games that buy the time I start getting bored of them they come out with a new raid or event or something, I would gladly pay a few dollars for some new material in a game I already own rather than pay 60 dollars for a new one. Sometimes I just dont have the money to pay for a new 60 dollar game but I can afford a 5 dollar VC game or a 5 dollar extra level in a game. And to me at times that extra level is as good as a new game.
I'd say there are multiple trends this generation which include: the rise of casual gaming, motion controls, DLC, the "co-op rennaissance," online multiplayer, more prominent indie developers and the concept of making you're own content.
Bring Back 8-Bit games...... Will Capcom thinks so
