If it's something like a game that has already got an official name for that character, then so be it. If it's some sort of game where the name is entirely your choice, I tend to go for something that fits the theme of the game and character. If it's just a normal game though (like a life simulation), I go for my real first name.
Depends how much the character is supposed to represent me Like Link is always Link, but he's always Kriedler or Deeso in Fallout or Elder Scrolls And in games with fully customizable parties like DQ9 or Disgaea, I give my main a proper name and all the others are as generic names as I can think of (CHICK, DOOD, PURPLE, FACEBUSTER, etc ) Pokemon being the exception, where they all get mean-sounding joke names, like "Facecompactr"
New name, same game.
3DS friend code: 5026-4413-9840
STEAM ID: Deeso
XBL ID: Kriedler 0
Now Playing (3DS): PKMN Y
PC: X-Com: Enemy Within, King Arthur's Gold
360: GTAV
Wii U: Deus Ex
Depending on the game involved and how many characters i get to name, i've got a group of names for set character types (mostly element-based, but when elements aren't a factor i'll take personality into account) i've used over the years and i'll hand them out depending on how well they seem like they'll fit. :3
if it's just the main character, again, i've got a couple of pseudonyms i've used for myself over the years, but sometimes i'll just go with my own shortened first name. depends on how i feel when i get to name people :3

Depends on the game. For every Zelda game, i use "Landon", which is a character name i originally used for a few D&D characters a billion years ago. A variation used for other fantasy games (like say, Oblivion) is "Landon Thrace".
I don't think there's really that many games i play that use a unique character name (by that i mean where the other characters in the game actually refer to you by that name, rather than it just being the name for the save file). For games like RPGs that allow you to rename companions, i'll usually just stick with the defaults.
Zelda games - Link Pokemon depends on the version For example, on blue version my character is named Blue and my rival Red. Gold version I would be Gold and my rival Silver etc.
