Hey, here's something I'd been mulling over for a while.
You know how videogames these days get higher and higher ratings, with the blood, and the killing, and the Bam-Bam-budambom..BAM! But it seems to me that all these games are catered towards teenagers and people who are, well, immature. (By immature here, I mean able to laugh at someone getting shot up the y'know, a la Bulletstorm.) I'm getting a little tired of advertisements which revolve around "look how big your gun is! Isn't this cool?! People exploding! Rated M for Manliness".
So with all these games which are graphically violent for the sake of graphic violence and "edginess", what would you say is a game which is truly designed for a mature audience?
always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)
How about one that applies to a mature audience in terms of age and thinking level? 999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors is a good example. It's definitely not appropriate for younger audiences in terms of content, but the concepts the game discusses are ones that cannot be easily understood by the average 5-year-old as well.
Best thread ever

I think games are called "mature" because you'd need to be mature to not be..? I dunno, I actually wonder about this a lot.
^ I have an idea but I can't really put it through to words... It's like my idea is in German but I'm trying to translate it into English so that I can understand it myself, horrible metaphor.
Don't forget the bullets. :3 But lots and lots of gore. And like LZ said, many whiny profane 12 year olds.

Profane 12 year olds, that occurs too much, when I was 12, like all everyone would ever talk about is call of duty and mass murder and guns and explosions and blood and some other sixth thing. Actually they still do that a lot.
But then again, it hasn't been that long since I was 12...
Having a mature mind set on said game, like moo moo said with 999 some people who are five probably won't know some of the content in the game even if they're allowed to play it, just like COD has some war based stuff most 5 year olds wouldn't get either

I dunno I've seen playthroughs of m games and I'm ** years old and I'm capable of appreciating the game for what it is and understanding the lessons and morals of it.
Actually come to think of it it's just that the game isn't about war and that it has morals. (persona 3 fes)

Some children feel mature when they use profanity and talk about stuff like that. It's a petty attempt at doing so, and proves more that they're immature. There's a ton of psychological stuff that goes on, but I'm not an expert on that.

Bloodlust, crude descriptions and scatalogical references. Add sex and drugs and you've got it.
To get the best example, Xbox Live + Any popular FPS is a show for you.
I don't play strictly Nintendo consoles and I don't plan on doing so. Plus, Nintendo does have some well put-together and mature games, such as Animal Crossing (which imo appeals to both children and adults equally well). I've also got to disagree with the FPS call; I think games like Call of Duty actually have an appropriate amount of violence for what they're trying to achieve. I'm more annoyed at games like Borderlands, which has a great premise that gets overlaid with buckets and buckets of gore from all sorts of different creatures. Seriously, just look at the boxart and tell me that a normal person won't get weird looks carrying that out of a store.

What about No more heroes?

In actuality, my idea of mature would be a game which offers more to a hardcore player then a casual one. Games like Portal 2 are E10 but offer more to hardcore gamers. Games like Bejeweled and free smartphone games offer more to casual players.
Typically, Nintendo titles vary but sit smack dab in the middle (with the exception of games like Metroid Prime. Most kids will be confused as crap there.)

RIPPING SOMEONES HEAD OFF, EATING THEIR INSIDES AND BLOOD GOING EVERYWHERE, GETTING A GUN SHOOTING INOCCENT PEOPLE WHILE THEY CRY FOR MERCY AND STEALING ANYTHING THEY GOT AND RAPING THEM!HUGGING THEM!....something little kids shouldn't play.
@happy_mask
You said some children do that, if anything only some children don't, I it isn't just m games either, one time I was in a grade..? Wait what grade was it? Well one of the smaller grades (4 and under) for a plan b thing ( weird thing my school does if a teacher can't show up they give you work and bsend you to another classroom to do it in) and they were talKing about some movie (21 jump street I think) and literally they're talking about it and apparently there's stuff in it about, Er, weenies... °-°, and yeah.
After I never looked at children the same way again... °-°
I meant gamers, not games. There are some decent M-rated titles like NMH2 and Madworld if you must. But Nintendo gamers typically don't rant about lack of gore. I've actually seen more cases where people claim to have hemophobia on sites like this.
