Nobody wants to be downsized. But it happens. Sega didn't want to stop producing consoles either but they were forced to. FORCED being the key word. Nintendo doesn't want to either. Even though there are many fans of Nintendo, I'm not disputing that, its clear the Wii U was in third place even before the PS4 and XBOX One was released.
So Nintendo being forced to become a third party developer may become a possibility in the next few years. So if it happens, what are the positives to it happening? I know there are negatives about it happening, but lets focus on the positives. Nintendo wouldn't die if it were to happen, it would just be a new era for gaming. Nintendo will adapt and still come out strong. The 3DS is still doing very well, its just the Wii U that isn't, so maybe even if Nintendo is forced to produce games for XBOX and PlayStation, they could still make their own handhelds with its own exclusive games.
The first thing is that there would be a much wider choice of games for the players. No longer would Nintendo-only fans look on in envy at their XBOX and PlayStation owning friends for having games that won't appear on Nintendo. No longer would Nintendo-only fans have to endure crappy ports and delays for those games. Or if you are currently or intend to be a multi-console owner at some point to get the best of both worlds, Nintendo and another console, then you only have to buy one console for the best of both worlds. And since software developers won't have to produce a port for a Nintendo console, that frees up resources to make larger, better or other new games for us.

Well for one thing I dont think Nintendo will stop making consoles maybe home consoles like the Wii U but Handhelds like the 3DS seem to be there bread and butter nowadays.
If they were forced to give up even handheld consoles and become a third party company some positives would be that people would be able to play Nintendo games on another systems like a PS then they wouldn't have to buy a separate systems just to play my Nintendo exclusives. Another good thing is that it would bring up sales for Sony and MS since alot of Nintendo fans would be spending their money on Xbox and PS products now.

A larger market of consumers not buying their products.
You know what that may happen at first but I am sure that when I new Zelda or Metroid or some other Nintendo IP came out for those systems those consumers will break and get a PS or Xbox. I mean how many Sega fans said the same or thought the same when Sega pulled out of the console market but are now owners of either a Nintendo, Sony, or MS system?

I can see Nintendo pulling out of the home console race, however since they're dominating the dedicated handheld market especially on their home turf (as far as I know, tablets aren't really a thing in Japan) there's no reason for them to pull out of that arena yet.
What I'm hoping happens in such a scenario is that Nintendo keeps their handhelds going but go PC for more console like games. It'll save me from having to ever buy a console again.

A legion of gamers give up gaming, some go to PC, a few go to competitor's consoles. I agree, this would cause a market collapse and expand the retro gaming scene. Fast-forward a few years and a new developer fills the Nintendo niche and XBOX/PS crowd good enough to bring the industry back.

If you're into the whole "flame war" thing then I guess another positive would be seeing Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon outsell the competition across other platforms. It's understandable when 3rd parties get grossly outsold by a Nintendo franchise on a Nintendo console, it'll be downright hilarious to see it happen on "their turf" so to speak.
