1. Super Mario Kart
The only one (besides Super Circuit) where they got the items right; You get weapons, and your enemies fire obstacles. You're never cheated out of a race. The control isn't as tight as it could be, but the overall fun factor is just head and shoulders over its successors.

2. Mario Kart: Super Circuit
Not much to say here. It's pretty much a SMK clone with slightly different physics and more tracks. I just prefer the original.

3. Mario Kart: Double Dash
The best of the "real 3D" Karts in my opinion. Finish-line KOs weren't as frequent as its successors, and the local multiplayer's a blast. Some great track design as well.

4. Mario Kart 64
The rubber-band AI and horribly dated visuals really brought this one down. Still, multiplayer is great fun.

5. Mario Kart Wii
The latest Mario Kart also has the worst item balancing, surprisingly enough. Its only saving grace is the ability to turn off aggressive items (blue shells, bombs, bullet bills, lightning clouds, etc.) in multiplayer and the addictive online multiplayer.

6. Mario Kart DS
I didn't like the physics or the track designs in this one, and since I can't get my DS online I haven't been able to experience the online multiplayer.

I've only owned one Mario Kart game and that was Mario Kart Wii, so I'll consider that one the best.

Thought I do have fond memories of playing Mario Kart 64 at my cousin house.

In my opinion MKWii and MK64

I've played all of the console Mario Karts and those two made the biggest impression on me

@megaboomface2, you really should re-read your comment before posting it. It's hard to understand. And it's not all about the graphics. SMK still looks great

Oh. I think I know what you were trying to say now.

Crisp pixels with nice textures...

vs. dark, muddy, ugly, blurry textures.

Of course, as my name implies, I may be a bit biased.

You are biased.
SMK's rubber-band AI opponents in GP mode is riduculosly difficult. MK64 might be worse when it comes to graphics, but it does not matter because at the end it comes down to the gameplay.

@Hyper+Luigi: And I thought the gameplay in Super Mario Kart was better. I don't remember SMK's 150cc AI all that well since I haven't played it in quite a while, but Mario Kart 64's has frustrated to no end.

Yeah, with 64 it was terrible. Having a boost and the guy behind me immediately got connection like he got a boost too. Very frustrating, unfair and this wasn't the case in Super Mario Kart. MK64 als have some pretty dull tracks (Rainbow Road is terrible) and the controls really don't feel good. Super Mario Kart didn't have that problem and it's also a more fair. I remember in MK64 there was one level with a boost pad. If you got hit by a shield, don't even bother. If you try and make the jump, you fail and fall back to last place. If you turn around to get some more distance and then go for the jump, you make it but still be last. In Super Mario Kart, this wasn't the case.
