Topic: Wait a second - are reviews REALLY out of 10 here (Nintendo Life)

OK - so if games are rated form 1 -10 - 5 is average right? Right? (I wonder.)

Lets look at a couple of reviews - please read them for your selves under the review bar :

Twilight Princess gets ripped to high heaven - all its 'faults' and warrants an '8'.

Indiana Jones gets ripped to high heaven, all of its faults, no real redemption at all in the review and warrants a '6'

So......the difference bettween TP and Staff of Kings is 2 measly points??

Staff of Kings is stilll rated a point above an average game?

I am confused, it seems so inconsistent - is a '7' the 'real' average here? What does a game have to do to warrant a below average rating? What game would most truly constiitue a '5'?

Help, please!

Were the reviews written by the same reviewer? Also give the Scoring policy (http://ds.nintendolife.com/scoring) a read. The first three paragraphs will tell you all you need to know.

The problem is that a game like Twilight Princess should be a ten, for its scope and level of content and the fact that it is seamless, there is no other score it deserves. Regardless of people's comparisons to previous Zelda's, not giving TP a ten was a big mistake in my eye as it messes the WHOLE system up. I felt as though it was being reviewed as a Zelda game, instead of just being reviewed as a game. It is ALOT better than 99% of all the other Wii games, therefore being one of the best on the console and deserving a ten. If I was to compare it to other Zelda games, THEN it would drop to an 8 or a 9. Plus, it was written in hindsight, which never helps. Plus, the reviewer is a meanie curmudgeon.

A 100point scoring system needs to be implemented to stop this site's review score's being contradictory. According to you guys Mr. Driller Drill Land is better than Twilight Princess. That, I cannot take seriously. Sorry guys, I love this site but those review score's seem all over the place.

1 -10 WOULD work fine - if '5' WAS the average and therefore the majority of the review scores.

'5' HAS to be the mathmatical average, otherwise EVERY game (regardless of score) is overrated.....

And yes these review were from the same reviewer but more importantly from the same site....

Most sites use 7 as the "average" but we choose to make 5 the average. Scoring Policy

OK, I'll pretend I understand and move along.

That might be the smart thing to do.

Yeah, the smart thing would be not to question something and just accept it. I'm glad I'm not smart then.

In truth, any time you have multiple reviewers, it makes it difficult to remain perfectly consistent as each reviewer has their own criteria and opinions to deal with in their reviews. We just try to make sure everyone adheres to the Scoring Policy and leave it at that.

No I appreciate that, and I'm not trying to belittle the site, because the reviews here are some of the best out there. Just a little sore when you see a Zelda game, which took years of development and polish and didn't really do anything wrong, get placed along side puzzle games, seems odd. But then you'll find the same problem on EVERY game site out there. Hence why I love Meta, and the overview it provides.

Blame mrmicawber for getting me started, lol.

Bear in mind also that "average" as a quality rating is NOT the same as "average" as a mathematical reference point.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/average

In terms of quality (which is how this site uses it), average means "typical; common; ordinary." It has nothing to do with any mathematical formula; the mathematical definition of average is entirely a separate thing.

So ends the vocab lesson for the day.

As a huge Zelda fan since the beginning, I didn't find Twilight Princess very good. Felt very vanilla and bland in overall design and even the story didn't grab me the way previous Zelda releases have. And although I'm not a big fan of puzzlers, there are quite a few puzzlers I'd rather play than Twilight Princess.

I can't stand Final Fantasy and think it's silly, but it's a worldwide success. Each to their own huh.

I've loved Zelda every since I was young and I felt that it was the best Zelda since Ocarina of Time (Not the best games ever.) and I actually think that it is better than Ocarina, I spent hours in Ocarina just looking for my next step and hours changed to days which just frustatrated me. Story wise, in my opinion games started with no story and I still don't care that much about story so it's not a problem for me. But you can't tell me that Wii Fit is better than Twilight and that Wii Music is about the same fun factor, but thats my opinion.

I'm sure Wii Fit is better to many people than Zelda TP just like I'm sure that there are plenty of gamers who prefer and feel that Wii Music is of higher quality and fun factor than TP. It just depends on the person and everyone is different. I've always told people to take the score numbers with a grain of salt and read the review. That's where you'll find out what it has to offer and whether or not it will likely appeal to you.

I love the Kingdom Hearts series and the Zelda series, but I don't care for the Final Fantasy series, it's too overrated.

I prefer the oddball stuff like the Lufia series, Breath of Fire series, and Legend of Heroes series.

Doesn't matter. We don't review just for hardcore gamers here. And as I previously stated, each reviewer is different. It's best to always read the review and use that to help you decide if a game is for you. And always check out a variety of reviews before you start making decisions.
