Just thought I'd bump this thread to bring up that Steins;Gate is being brought over to the west by JAST USA (a small publisher that brings over a whole host of Visual Novels, among other things). The anime is very well regarded, and at least from what I've heard, the Visual Novel is great, too. Definitely worth a look if you're a fan. JAST USA also promises to add new features to the game, though I don't believe those features have been touched upon as of yet. 5pb will also be watching the sales closely, so should it succeed, we may see more games like this in the future. I suggest reading the link for more info. You also may want to watch JAST USA's site for more details, but....major NSFW warning. I know they used to have a safe section, but I can't find it anymore. :/

Seconding that Ever17 recommendation; it's amazing and is one of my favourites. Corpse Party can also be played on your computer, provided you don't mind the outdated graphics.

I also need to start both Shikkoku no Sharnoth and Katahane, one day. I've played Sekien no Inganock, so I'll probably like the former, but opinion on Katahane seems mixed.

I'm surprised looking at your avatar you didn't bring up the When They Cry series. I remember hearing great things about the Umineko games.

I'm downloading the Android version of Ever17 as we speak. It looks great! I can't wait until it's downloaded so I can break out my "amazing" Japanese skills.

Cringing is really fun.

@FadingEuphoria Good luck! I know it was good in English, at least.

Also, I just got word that Danganronpa for the the Vita is being localized by NISA. That's the game the upcoming Anime is based on. Should be interesting. I'll post a link when I can find it, only got word from someone at the con.

Clannad, Clannad After Story, Clannad Tomoyo After PC - All of which are good games, will make you punch a wall to feel manly again. I CRIED MY BRAINS OUT ESPECIALLY AFTER STORY. Tomoyo after is good though because of the H scenes

Muv luv and Muv Luv alternative PC - Do not let the title fool you, this is one deep game with many disturbing ideas.

Fate/stay night PC - the other word for Visual Novel.

Zero Escape Series - 999 is AWESOME on the DS, one of the best stories (if not the best) in the system. I can't seem to grab a copy of Virtue so i'll leave at that

Ace Attorney series - Truly truly hilarious.

Kamidori Alchemy PC - Fire Emblem awakening w/ hentai

Steins Gate PC - awesome plot and story flow, and the protagonist is fukken osom. about time paradox and sh1t like that

Oreimo PC - wincest and tons of fanservice

Katawa Shoujo - if you have weird fetishes for blind girls, mute girls, decapitated girls. feel free to play it. nah jk. it is kinda cute.

Sengoku Rance PC - LOTS OF HENTAI YEAH

Also I disagree about visual novels being purely made of wall of texts, as you can see they are already putting in some gameplay elements in some VNs (Tomoyo after, Rance and Kamidori) and still categorize them as VNs, i think Zero Escape and Ace Attorneys will fit as as VNs

No offense, but if the anime adaption of Muv Luv is any indication, I'd stay far away from that series. I'm a mecha fanatic, who has only dropped one other mecha show completely (and still regrets it), yet I had to drop Muv Luv like a rock only 6 episodes in (and from what I'm told, I wasn't the only one. I think I only know one person who made it all the way to the end...and he was in it solely for the fanservice).

Actually, half the games I personally wouldn't list as Visual Novels (particularly the hentai games. Those are definititely Strategy RPGs, and eroge is practically a genre in itself), and hell, even 999 is more of a hybrid (which is a thing. You can mix multiple genres. Then they're usually refered to by both of the genres that make them up) than a full-on Visual novel, and is only really being counted because most people have actually played it and therefore makes as a good gateway drug (that and I'm pretty sure no one played it for the puzzle aspects anyways).

That said, props for bringing up Stein's;Gate and Fate/Stay Night, the latter of which I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned yet. I know I'm personally not a fan of it, but it is one of the more popular Visual Novels out there.

I always wanted to see an official translation of the only virtual novel I can think of right now, Radical Dreamers. If only to to have the soothing satisfaction of seeing Character A get revealed to be Character B in canon.

(And to see that crazy Timecop plot in English).

@wolfy~

well... if they got introduced into VNs during the time of 999 then they wouldn't probably know much about Fate.

and no don't rely on the movie adaptation of muv-luv, it su.x... well the muv-luv in itself su.x until you get to the alternative arc. you can skipp Muv-luv and all and start with alternative but if you are a perfectionist like me... well yeah

Actually, The anime takes place after Alternative, though I assumed it was the adaption of Alternative. I'm still wary, if only because the anime really was terrible on every level, but I guess I shouldn't warn aways others from trying the VNs at least.

There's a visual novel on kickstarter right now called Megatokyo. It's based on a web manga by the same name. I only discovered it yesterday, but I really like what I've read so far.

Oh! Megatokyo. I've read it forever ago. I hope it goes well as a VN.

Well I'm way past that, and I still like it. I guess it's safe to continue reading. Sorry you got sick of it so quickly; I've been through that with other webcomics.

How has no one mentioned Ghost Trick yet? That game was so amazing.

Although I haven't played it, I'm fairly certain Ghost Trick isn't a visual novel.

try at least alternative. the animation was conceptualized after the first Muv Luv and before Alternative. You just have to watch and play them as i've said if you are the perfectionist.

Alternative is really good, but imo experiencing the other not-so-good predecessors makes the whole experience unforgettable.

It's another Adventure game with a hard emphasis on Gameplay and puzzle solving. I can't believe someone mentioned that here.
