Nothing against Microsoft either, I can understand why someone would buy the system, especially with the upcoming Master Chief Collection, but this video is a good example of the modern day gulf between Japanese and western gamers.
With 360 they tried. Blue Dragon, Lost odyssey and Tales of Vesperia are just a select key examples. With One there is Scalebound, which is ways off.
Though launch lineups were similar, all western games, some japanese games. But it doesn't matter MS simply cannot penetrate the Japanese market no matter why they do.

"Finish your mission, prove your loyalty." - MGS3

And just think, Japan is going to be one of XB1's stronger tier 2 markets. Most of the other markets it launches in this month either have no interest or already had a soft launch ages ago.
This gen won't be nearly as one-sided as the PS2 domination, but it's on the track to be another one-horse race. Any sales analysis sites aren't even bothering to talk about PS4 sales. The big conversation topic is the race between XB1 and Wii U.
It's the entire approach Microsoft is doing wrong. They demand money for online (part of the reason nobody in japan wants a PS4 either), but don't offer any substantial games relevant to japan. With the 360, they had some stuff, but it was mostly Cave games, which are great shoot 'em up's, but not worth getting an entire console for (playing the arcade versions is substantially cheaper).
But there's also the huge misunderstanding that japan cares about all that multimedia trash stuffed into the XBone at all. Because they couldn't care less. There are also a lot of controversies going around their marketing of the 360 (fake buyers, employees forced to buy one on official events, free 360's out of despair). And lastly, japanese folks are ridiculously proud, and have a hard time accepting stuff from the west in their country.
I guess this is why Microsoft is going to try and go after China now that the 14-year ban has been lifted. Unfortunately, I get the feeling that China would be even less likely to supply their products, considering the censorship rules that are in place. Sony may be able to get their foot in the door, but imo, Nintendo has the greatest shot of success there, as most of their games are within the bounds that have been set. The problem is, iirc, there's nothing set in stone for Nintendo and China. Only talks.
