My biggest pet peeve is how in the later Mario Kart games (starting with Wii) after you get hit with an item and after you slow down and spin out for a second, your character just sits there for another second flailing around like there's an earthquake or something. It's so minor, but it annoys me every time.

@ReaderRagfish Mario Kart Wii was one of the first M.K.s I've played, so whenever I play older ones, I'm just there waiting for that flailing animation to end even though it's not there.

@Elvie I had extensively played all the previous Mario Kart games by the time Mario Kart Wii was released, so it really annoyed me. They could have just made the car spin out for another second rather than flailing and it wouldn't bother me even if it was the same amount of time spent slowed down.

Games that don't let you save until you've completed the tutorial but don't even make clear how long the tutorial will last. Especially if you've spent time customising your character and your base.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.

Some games not letting me rewatch scenes. Seriously, let me just have event theater or something...

(And I wish Octopath will let you see all the dialogues instead of forcing them to be in your team...)

When you complete a game and it just sends you back to your last save point after you've seen the credits. (Most Zelda games do this.) I mean, it's understandable if something happens at the end which completely changes the game world or kills a playable character or something, but it would be really nice if you could return to the game and see what it's like after you've saved the world or whatever. Thankfully Super Mario Odyssey lets you do exactly that.

@Elvie Games being just shy of "too dark". Because for me, what most game devs seem to think is enough light, usually still isn't for me. If I have to squint, something ain't right.

Another nitpick that applies more to older games than recent ones: Not being able to squeeze through an area that clearly your character should be able to easily. Anime and cartoons do that crap too. "Oh know, I am in jail, whatever will I do?" How about you step out through that half a meter wide hole right there?
Also related to this: ledges that a character can't got up, that me and my lazy fat butt could get up easily in real life. Like, dude, you run 2km with a 40kg rocket launcher on your back, you can get up that meter high ledge!

@subpopz Like Chibi-Robo? I can't imagine the game without audible gibberish. Plus, it probably prevented bad voice acting reciting the script.

Although, it does makes the original Star Fox feel a bit awkward to go back to.

@Heavyarms55 Is this a problem in older games because it seems all the modern games I've playing have offered an option to adjust the brightness.

It annoys me when I get to the end of a game (especially an RPG) and the only thing standing between me and the credits is a needlessly long dungeon and a final boss with 5 different phases.

the DQXI overworld theme. its a midi orchestrated loop thats 20 seconds, and you hear it for over 50 hours. its too bad, i really enjoy the rest of the OST.

@Elvie They do. But it still annoys me. This is a thread about nitpicks and I am nitpicking.

@subpopz Oh yeah, Castlevania III had this level where the screen scrolls up every few seconds and you are automatically dead as Luigi if it catches up with you. That was one of the most frustrating and baffling moments I've have played in a N.E.S. game.

@Heavyarms55 Oh, I kind of thought you meant it in a way where you're stuck with a locked brightness but I guess the need or range of adjustable brightness is still a pain.

One of my biggest nitpicks right now is in the Smash Bros. series. All of the games contain an undeniablly high level of quality, fun, and, most importantly, attention to detail. But that is where the games manages to drop the ball a bit (other than laggy online connections and a lack of a story mode).

For example, Luigi uses the ''Green Missile'' attack as his Side + B, even though he has a good wealth of games that can lend him a more faithful move. His Stun Flashlight from Dark Moon comes to mind as well as his ability to manipulate electricity from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Ganondorf is another character with this problem as he is based on Captain Falcon. Although, at least they are going in the right direction by changing his Smash Attacks to use his sword.

These unfaithful moves actually bring me on to another topic as well. The custom moves were a bit of a letdown because before they revealed the final batch of content for S.S.B. 4, I was hoping that they would add custom moves that use different attacks based on their games. Instead, the majority of the custom moves were just slight variations of their standard move set, which were apparently game breaking and had to be unlocked. To be fair, some characters had very few games or only one game to work with like the Ice Climbers. While Captain Falcon lacked any viable move set due to the the nature of his games. But it still felt like a missed opportunity not to have Mario swap out his F.L.U.D.D. special with something like the Tanooki Statue form.

I just realized I typed out a complaint the length of an article.

Final Fantasy 8 - One of the most fun aspects of Final Fantasy 7 was collecting the summoning Materia that let you summon down giant creatures such as Bahamut and Shiva. You could head out at any time & in any order to collect these Materia, if you missed one during the game it was fine.. you could just comeback and grab it later.

However in Final Fantasy 8 they changed it up so that you now collected Guardian Forces, basically the exact same summons but with the added feature that if you missed them (and didn't save in the right place) you could NOT go back & get them... you'd missed out on the úber powerful collectable forever (or at least the first playthrough). It just seemed fundamentally unfair.

This just bugged me SO much I traded in my copy of FF8 for Mortal Kombat 4 on the Gameboy Color & dropped Final Fantasy altogether until FF:Tactics on the GBA. I may have overreacted at the time.
