Disappointing that another retailer in North America may be going down. It's a sign of the times though. Give lazy ass Americans an easy way to do something where they don't even have to get up, and they'll do it. I like Amazon but prefer to walk into stores.

Never had fond memories of Toys R Us outside of me calling them asking if they got the new Amiibos and the shop assistants responding 'Amigos? No, we don't have those and we never will!' I very well knew they had amiibos so that lady was just mean and lazy. Never shopped there again.

But I can still remember when the two toy stores of my childhood closed down. This has been many many years ago. Tears were shed but already at that time my interest had shifted to videogames and neither had that many or even the new ones. So I very well understand how some might feel hearing this.

Not bothered. There's not a TrU within 30 mins of me. I remember the excitement when it first came to my region, but other than a single Subbuteo team, I can't remember anything else I've ever had from them.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

It's only US and Canada, so hopefully at Christmas the UK will still have that really cheesy advert

@Bunkerneath That advert is a part of my childhood!

As you say though - they're not going under here in the UK (and might not in the US - bankruptcy doesn't mean the whole business necessarily disappears. They may find a buyer for some or even all of the stores to carry on).

I used to love going to Toys R Us to look at the wall of games with the tokens you'd take to the counter. There's nothing really quite like it today.

I've tried to like Toys R Us over the years, but the stupidity of the workers is absolutely ridiculous, I had very recently gone in there on a Lego set's release date (and other people that I knew of had managed to obtain it at a TRU, even before the street date release). So I walked in the store, and couldn't find the thing ANYWHERE, and I asked multiple workers if they have the thing, and they literally didn't even know what in the world I was talking about, and when they said they would go check for it if they had it in stock, rather than checking the back, all they did was walk around the store. I ended up finding the set at the Target next door to them just sitting right near the front.

Basically, if Toys R Us wants to recover from their potential Bankruptcy, they gotta fix their prices, and at least notify workers of major product releases.

@Bunkerneath That is why they are still going - they haven't changed that advert in 30 years. Penny pinching paid off!

Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot

If they do end up closing at least we could look forward to some closing sales. It's sad though since Toys R Us is my favourite retailer to go to when buying games or amiibo in-store.

Sad to hear. I hope they'll be keeping the stores open. We don't know yet if it's a chapter 11 or chapter 13. It may not be liquidation, it may just be reorganization. The article lists "secure it's debts" so this sounds like a reorganization, not an "everything must go, all sales final" situation yet. I'm sure some stores will close as part of the process however, but the chain should keep going for at least a while. K-Mart's been bankrupt twice, and they're still around. Finally dying out maybe soon, but that's over a decade after the last bankruptcy and only after the ill advised Sears merger where Sears just uses the potentially lucrative K-Mart as a money pump to secure it's only failing stores that never ever should have been in distress considering they invented mail order shopping to begin with, until every last one is gone.

Hard to see Toys R Us not doing well. Toys is kind of an easy business....it's amazing they managed to screw it up. The big problem is as we've moved ever more toward the "Christmas is everything" shopping cycle, as a toy store, they make all their money one moth of the year, and lose money keeping the lights on every other month. Their only real competitors are Walmart and Amazon. But Amazon lacks the appeal of "kid in a toystore" attraction. Nothing draws kids like ceiling high towers of toys. So it's really just them and Walmart.

Fun fact, Home Depot was designed around Toys R Us. The reason for the huge warehouse risers was stated as trying to replicate for adults that impulse buy mentality created for kids walking into Toys R Us. The design sells.

I personally loved Toys R Us. I feel bad not having gone in in the past few years....feels odd as an adult without kids going into kid infested Toys R Us, but I should have for the stroll down memory lane. When I was a kid, I'd say half of my NES/SNES games came from there. The little pull tags on the blue vinyl pouches under the wall of cardboard box fronts with the back on the hinged flip side. That's where I waited in line to play N64 Mario 64 when it came out. That's where I first saw Saturn and Playstation (and ignored them because who cared?). Toys R Us = Nintendo to me. And it's still one of the big official re-sellers of Nintendo. Oh I got other toys there too, but lets face it, I went there for Nintendo I even got my Virtual Boy there!

Also, Lionel Kiddie City. Am I the only one who remembers that?

@Gamer83 The big problem with B&M isn't so much that lazy Americans only mail order. I used to prefer B&M. The problem is the population boom of the past 20 years and the ill thought planning means that everything is gridlock and the shopping area that used to be 15-20 minutes away round trip is now an hour to an hour and a half away round trip, meanwhile everyone works more, and housewives that take care of the menial day tasks are no longer a thing unlike when most of us were kids. So who has time to waste an extra hour+ several times a week to shop when you can just have it delivered, averaging out to the same amount of time it used to take to buy in brick and mortar and a fraction of the stop-and-go bumper to bumper stress? Couple that with the fact that by the time you get to brick and mortar they don't actually have stock of anything and tell you they only carry the most popular models, but you can order the rest online and have it delivered to the store.....at which point I realize I could have just stayed home and bought it on Amazon. B&M didn't become obsolete because nobody likes it. It became obsolete because the rest of the civilization developed in such a stupid way that going anywhere for anything became an uphill battle that everyone would avoid when given the chance. I'm sure in rural areas it's just as fun as it always was. But that doesn't help the retailers. Most real competition at retail was devoured by Walmart before Amazon was even a thing. Amazon mostly just out-Walmarted Walmart.

TRU always had the worst prices in my area and an ok selection. Nothing to do with being lazy (considering the American work week and tendency for overtime why do people run to that as a stereotype?) and more to do with better pricing and selection elsewhere. I was devastated by the liquidation of fao schwarz however. That was an icon.

I've been in TRU the most during the 3DS/Wii U era (2011-2016) as for some reason back then toy stores were more reliable for stocking Nintendo games than game stores. TRU/Smyths + Nintendo UK Online Store was the perfect Nintendo combo during that era.

Shame. They've had good sales for 3DS games in the past months in their website.
Apart from that, never been inside one of their stores, so... can't comment much.

I have a chronic lack of time, for everything.

Now playing: Okami HD, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Educate yourselves, people.

Toys R Us aren't going anywhere. They are not bankrupt. They are declaring bankruptcy, which is fundamentally different. It is a not unusual strategy that business that have been losing money and racking up debt will do to reorganize and restructure their debt. Many businesses have done this.

No doubt, they are not in a great place, but they are not going anywhere. Maybe some limited store closings at worst, but even that isn't a certainty.
