Even with censorship it doesn't guarantee it will pass in all territories. Take Criminal Girls 2 on Vita for example they censored and changed the art in the game yet it didn't pass Australia's ratings and wasn't released.

I don't know about that. Australia refused classification to MeiQ: Labyrinth of Death recently because you could use the Vita's touchscreen to make their breasts move. Even the censors in the U.S. only slapped it with a T rating.

You know another game that launched in the U.S. but was effectively banned in Australia? Valkyrie Drive. Apparently because the game "uses sexuality as an incentive and reward."

Australia is becoming a nightmare example of what happens when you let censors get away with whatever they want. Over 200 games have been banned in Australia since 2015.

You know, I think I'm really starting to like the Australian Censure board.

Why do people even give a hoot about censoring things in games? You do realize that the US has different viewpoints than EU or JP based on our culture alone, right? What's the point? I legitimately don't understand.

To be fair, I'm an American, and I feel like our rating board isn't doing enough. There is a level of personal bais to this. After all, they wouldn't be called the "lowest common denominator" if there weren't plenty who are willing to scrape the bottom of the barrel. Whether or not bottom feeders need to be catered to is...up for debate, however.

It depends...XCX for example....Lin's clothing, I'm fine with. But the character customization? Ugh...

It's still a great game, but like I said Nintendo's decisions make no sense sometimes.

I do agree, but the ESRB would decide it's M rated because T means Teen and no teen would know what boobs are. Ever.

Undecided on whether taking away character customization options (FROM WOMEN BECAUSE IT'S A BLANK SLATE CHARACTER YOU IDIOTS) or dealing with the ESRB being absurd would be worse. Both are infuriating in their own special way.

You missed my point. I wasn't saying our classification system was decent by any means. I was saying that publishers for a long time have pandered more to what the US market seems appropriate. Complete disregard for the slight differences here in Australia. Especially around drugs and violence. It's the disregard that has turned our classification board into the monster it is.

If publishers don't edit themselves a little bit? They risk the public giving the government more power. Power it will use to be even more heavy handed. So as an Australian I think it's absurd that you're complaining about things like the removal of racy costumes for characters that were underage in the game. Because in my country games like Mortal Kombat have in the past been banned entirely.

Again, the grass is always greener. Now if only we could do something about the poisonous wildlife, and the deserts, and the Marmadukes oh, those didn't actually exist! You have Dingos instead. They can stay.

True, if anything the US has far more reason to be salty right now. But that's a topic for another forum....

What? I'm talking about turning Australia into a paradise I can happily habitate. It already has a positive social environment, and its close to Japan. Now, getting some volunteers for tree planting should be easy if nutjobs like Green Peace could do it. But that poisonous wildlife is a problem. I wonder, hm...is there anyone who could afford to pay 10,000 exterminators who hasn't already sold his soul for a bag o' chips?

I think the Fates' censorship of Kana is so all over the place. Male Kana can't "marry" anyone aside from Selkie but Female Kana can, and Female Kana can't wear a towel but Male can.

Censorship is ruining my dragon child's life!

I’m very much against any form of censorship, even self induced. Also, I think games like bayonetta are rather prude. Same goes for no more heroes.

I understand the power balance that non-censorship creates. Yet that just means that those in power are not representing the people well. There’s the bigger evil in that. Not to say there’s no point in anything, just to say that I’d like things to dig far deeper.

After all, they wouldn't be called the "lowest common denominator" if there weren't plenty who are willing to scrape the bottom of the barrel. Whether or not bottom feeders need to be catered to is...up for debate, however.

Let's explore this a little bit.

Who, or what, is a bottom feeder?
What standard of value do you use to come to this judgment?

Moreover, as long as something you don't like isn't forced into your life, why do you care who is catered to?

Let's take something you perhaps like, but I don't. I might consider it "inappropriate," for whatever reason, even if you're into it. Why should I have any say over what you get to enjoy when I can just as easily ignore it?

The idea that "I don't like this, so you can't enjoy it either" is anti-thetical to the concept of a free society. It's the motto of the totalitarian.

Obviously, some rules have to be established to prevent harm coming to others. This is why certain extreme forms of pornography should always stay illegal: because they involve people being harmed who haven't consented to this, or who are unable to consent to this due to developmental issues. But for things that aren't directly harming people, I have a hard time swallowing why one person's standards should ever be allowed to control what media others are able to consume.

@skywake
"If publishers don't edit themselves a little bit? They risk the public giving the government more power."

This is the reason why ratings boards exist: to provide information to the public so that they can make informed decisions about the media they consume.

The problem is that you talk about publishers "edit[ing] themselves," but who are they editing themselves for? What standard of public or private morality are they obeying?

@Ralizah I generally agree with you, but what do you think about censorship in order to get a different age rating on a game to appeal to a wider audience?

Octane

Ralizah

@Octane So, censorship is really about two different problems, right? A legal problem and a social problem.

On the legal front, obviously there's nothing wrong with that: a company has the right to self-censor themselves if they want to. I may not like it, but too bad for me. I have no more right to impose my looser standards on a company than the most censorship-loving control freak has the right to impose their stricter standards.

So, it comes to more of a social problem: is the censorship socially detrimental in some form or fashion? It depends. I think in many cases extensive self-censorship can create a culture of fear that is detrimental for a society as a whole by making certain subjects taboo. It can also, and this is my biggest concern, set a precedent for more compulsory forms of censorship in the future.

For me, it depends on how the censorship is approached. Does the company cut out just enough to get a lower age rating for a game that it thinks will be more popular with a younger demographic? It probably won't bother me too much, it that case. But if a company is just randomly censoring its products in order to avoid making certain groups of people uncomfortable, then I'm going to be a bit more disturbed. In this latter case, I think it is probably true that games are often censored in order to not offend people who largely weren't even going to buy the game in the first place. Which is kind of a betrayal of the audience, imo.

Bravo @Ralizah! My thoughts exactly! The comic link I posted earlier mirrors the sentiment.
