A Link To The Past is the greatest Zelda game of all time. It took the original formula and added the second dimension, the three jewels of power, the Master Sword, which have been staples of the series ever since. You don't get the sublime Ocarina of Time without the contributions made from this installment.

Agreed. ALttP was the perfect balance of the traditional formula and "modern" Zelda.
It is one of the worst, but being different is just one of the more common complaints. You can't really blame it for being different, though. It's only the second game in the series, and they didn't find the perfect game play style yet. The first Zelda was a top-down perspective for the entire game, and Zelda 2 still had the top-down view for the map but much of the game is played in a side-scrolling fashion. Experimentation is the name of the game, and they returned to the Zelda 1 style with ALTTP because it was the more popular of the two.
As for the game being bad otherwise, it's one of the most challenging games in the series (not that challenge is bad), and it doesn't need to be. The somewhat slow leveling up, the fact that whenever you get game over you go back to the first area of the game, the necessity of magic spells toward the end of the game, and the very few 1-ups available to find all work together to make the game less fun to play. I don't think side-scrolling belongs in a Zelda game, and while the game feels different than the first, it's still a decent title.
@Mega SMB2 IS the worst Mario game, and Zelda 2 IS the worst Zelda game. I'm not saying these games suck, but they are the least outstanding than the other games in their respective series. If most SMB games are 9-10, SMB2 is an 8. Good game against others, but not so good compared to the other SMB games. Same with Zelda 2, an 8 to every other games' 9-10

Rift actually made the comment about SMB2, but I agree that they are the worst games of their respective series, and I mean that in the nicest way. When compared to other top notch titles like SMB3 and ALTTP, SMB2 and Zelda 2 are weak entries. They are still good games, but put them side by side with the others and they feel out of place.
I'm not the biggest Zelda Fan. I don't think I want to join, but I have to say, I can respect the good reviews, and say Skyward Sword looks cool. this isn't as popular as my Kirby Fan Club thread... :3
According to IGN, here are the ratings of all Zelda games:
Ocarina of Time - 10 Link's Awakening - 10 Oracle of Ages - 10 Oracle of Seasons - 10 Majora's Mask - 9.9 Wind Waker - 9.6 A Link To The Past - 9.5 Twilight Princess - 9.5 Spirit Tracks - 9.3 Legend of Zelda - 9.0 Minish Cap - 9.0 Phantom Hourglass - 9.0 Four Swords Adventures - 8.7 Adventure of Link - 8.5
Not a surprise, that Four Swords and Adventure of Link bottom out this list. A little surprised to see ALttP so low, it is definitely my favorite. Also surprised to see 3 handheld games at perfect 10's. But ranking these games is like ranking your children, they are all great.
Is Zelda the greatest series of games? This is the series that has kept me buying Nintendo systems. I love Mario, and I have only recently gotten into Metroid, but Zelda is the best.

Discuss? Okay, they love Zelda. But Ocarina of Time doesn't deserve a perfect 10...
@infernape1000 its all opinion of course, but I'd say that Ocarina worked hard for that 10, and it's well deserved. aside from the flying colors success with which Ocarina translated a much loved 2D franchise into the world of 3D, Ocarina pioneered staples of 3D gameplay that we're still seeing in games of today. I was just playing No More Heroes 2 last night and thinking about how its targeting system is straight out of Ocarina Of Time, not to mention the inclusion of a button to reset the camera to behind the player. Without rambling on and on about why Ocarina is, in a word, the sh*t, I'll just close by saying, It's a perfect 10, not because it's the BEST Zelda game (Link To The Past definitely takes that title IMO) but because it's the most significant in the greater scheme of games in general.
