NNID: KittenKoder ..... what else would it be?
For the PS2 .... FFX. I mean, FF7-9 was kind of bad, but FFX just lost me.
How can you call it that bad? Sure, the voice acting sucked, it's dialogue was poorly written, and the characters could be annoying (largely thanks to said poorly written dialogue and voice acting), and it dragged on too long, but the story had good twists and intentions, especially at the very end, and the combat system was easily the best the series has seen, bar none. Sure, it could've use more openness, but they actually managed to make it linear without sacrificing exploration, still including plenty of secrets and treasures. Ultinately it helped the game, by increasing the pace and allowing for better graphics, without really losing much - it's actually not much more linear that FF4 (which still gets lauded to this day by old-school fans of the series), just that it doesn't force you through an overworld that, IIRC, doesn't really have much to do it for most of the game except to go to your next destination (which is always explicitely told to you, anyways). And it still opens up partway through the game like every FF game does.
I know this is an opinionated topic, but that's why I'm asking: I want an explanation for your opinion, because out of context it just sounds really weird to me. I'm not even the biggest fan of FFX, but I still don't see how it's a terrible game, at least from my own experience. I can understand why some people would find FF7-9 to be bland games, even though I don't agree with it, because people have explained that opinion to me. No one's explained to me why they thought FFX was one of the worst games they've played, though.

A bad story only amplifies the other flaws. The mechanics were a mess, the game was excessively linear in progression, and the worst part, there's a direct sequel.

I don't know if I agree with that, like, at all, but then again I never really cared whether or not a game had a good story, so I'll let it go.
I'm totally fighting you over the mechanics, though. How were they a mess?
No control over the character development at all.

...well, you do, it's just detrimental to the game to do such a thing because then you wind up with a bunch of lesser characters who can't do anything as well as a super specialized character. And really, in most Final Fantasy games, the control is superficial anyways. It just makes every character basically the same instead of making them all unique. And really, do you need to customize your guys when you can switch party members at any time mid-battle? Do you really need 3 guys to know Bio if none of them can do it as well as a character who is purposely built to be a Mage?
Really, I like Customization, too, but I don't think it's ever been very important to the Final Fantasy games since Final Fantasy V. I know I find I usually just either specialize everyone anyways, or I have too many redundancies. Granted I suppose if Final Fantasy X was gonna do a linear system, why did they force use to go through and level up stuff individually instead of just automatically leveling up stats like usual. It's definitely a point against the game that it tries to pass off and offer some level of customization when it really wasn't there...
All that said, when you said mechanics I was expecting more something to do with the battle system and whatnot. I had stuff ready for that...

All you are is living up to the "modern gamer" stereotype now. The game sucks, the bad story destroys it straight out of the gate, the cumbersome and poorly planned mechanics and controls are game ending. It was not a new FF game, it was a stripped FF game.

So now you've resorted to shameless insults and talking about your opinions like they're facts without having any intention of backing those opinions up with actual facts, is that it? Then I guess we're done here. So much for a healthy debate and understanding.
I mean ... um ... erm .... what were we talking about?

Actually, I'm a Nintendo fangirl, I use to be a fan of Final Fantasy but, face it, the series was pretty much dying from 7 on. But meh, you're right, this argument is redundant and lame, so to greener pastures I run!
Next game that was the worst video game ever played: I can't recall the name. It was some game about demons and machines, a scrolling shooter. If anyone can recall the name, it was for the NES, please help. For starters, it was impossible, I never even saw past the first level. It was redundant, and the graphics were more bland than some Gameboy games.
