Someone explain to me, in plain English, exactly what this term means. This type of thing is infuriating. This is a misuse of the English language. This is what I have so far...

"Woot originated as a hacker term for root (or administrative) access to a computer. However, with the term as coincides with the gamer term, "w00t".

"w00t" was originally an trunicated expression common among players of Dungeons and Dragons tabletop role-playing game for "Wow, loot!" Thus the term passed into the net-culture where it thrived in video game communities and lost its original meaning and is used simply as a term of excitement.
"I defeated the dark sorcerer! Woot!"

"woot! i r teh flagmastar!" (Think Tribes)

"Woot, I pwnzed this dude's boxen!' "

Which brings me to the term, "pwned". If you cannot bring yourself to use the actual word, "owned", then please leave. We hate you!

This has been a public service announcement. If this was an actual emergency, someone would of came into your home and beat you with a frozen trout fish. That is right, a trout slap!

Hey man, language changes, words evolve, don't worry about it, such is life.

Except this type of thing is definitely a "de-evolution" of the language.

Overuse of words like Epic, Win, Fail, Pwned etc. bugs me too, it is like people are actively looking for a situation to use these words as if it is cool, which it is not, neither is first.

people have been crying about that for years, and it hasn't stopped anything. i think it's safe to say that you may not like it, but (especially where the younger generations are concerned) resistance is futile.

Just give it time and it will eventually go away.

Oh, I know it's not going to stop anything...but it is unfortunate. I shudder at what is likely happening to the literacy rate...I know of far too many teens and young adults that wouldn't be able to spell if their lives depended on it.

oh, i dunno... i know people who type worse than AOL users, speak like /b/tards, and read plenty of books. how people type or behave on the internet does not always equal what they do or how they behave IRL. :3

re: teenagers you know of -- i think it's all a phase, for the most part, and when it ticks off the older generations, kids love it even more. it's like those commercials for the phone texting service with the kid speaking in acronyms (idk, my bff jill?) and the mom is all 'wtf'... but they'll grow out of it just like we grew out of whatever silly phases we went through when we were their age, y'know? it's useless to get worked up over unless there's someone present using strange words to such an extent that you absolutely cannot understand what they're saying, which is not the case at the moment.

The thing that annoys me about these words is not the words themselves but the way in which they are used. If i watch a video i like/dislike i would prefer to leave a constructive comment, not a silly phrase - Win/Epic fail
I suppose when i was young phrases kids used where just as annoying (mainly anything from Tmnt) Cool dude/radical/cowabunga etc

TwilightV

As long as it isn't excessively used in public, I see no real problem... I thought woot was just a regular expression like wahoo or something.

I think Engrish, lolcatz-stylee is probably the very best thing to come out of the internet.

Oh, and just to show I'm "down" with the "yoof" I have to say that Danny August is just two-thousand-late; I on the other hand am very much three-thousand-eight.

Now then, someone please bring down the beat...

My brother uses "woot," "owned," and other Internet language. While I am one to copy stuff I see on games and stuff, my brother's use of Internet language annoys me.

..."Twilight"? I'd rather read "My Immortal."
