The show was made to basically sell the Playmates figures. They wanted to test the waters before starting mass production.

The original Mirage comic book really wasn’t made for youngsters. The Turtles diced up enemies while spouting the occasional curse word, and one of the Turtles’ allies was hockey mask-wearing vigilante Casey Jones, who beat down even low-level crooks with baseball bats and hockey sticks. But when Playmates Toys expressed interest in producing TMNT action figures in 1986 (we’ll get to those), the comic’s PG-13 attitude wouldn’t fit Playmates’ 4-8 year old target audience. In addition, part of Playmates’ marketing was an animated cartoon, which had to pass television censors. So to make the Turtles viable for the younger set, the Turtles had to soften up.

So they aired the show a couple times till it caught on. Only then would they go into mass production. The difference now is the show is not solely a marketing advertisement to sell the merchandise. Nick is very respectful of the source material. I would say it's basically a bit of both. The cartoon was a quick, cash-in. The creators had to give up a lot of their ideas and freedom to basically make TMNT famous. In the end I am glad they did, but the cartoon, is not the holy grail we remember. I loved the Ninja Turtles in my childhood, I saw the cartoon, watched all the movies, and games. But in reality that cartoon is the blacksheep to the whole franchise. It was a slice of something much better.

Compared to the original stories, all the turtles have about the same personalty. Not trying to rain on people's parades or step on toes, and I apologize, and I went a bit overboard. These are people's childhoods we are talking about. But I have seen the original cartoon numerous times. I've seen all off each series about maybe 3 times (not the Japanese Heroes Turtles though). All I can see it now is a marketing plow for the toys. The writing, plot, character designs are sub par.

The original series (comic) was still funny as well. It just didn't make a joke every 5 seconds. There were parts were you could take it seriously.

The 2003 turtles series just didn't do it for me. I hated the unorganic straight edged artificial sharp cornered character design and the turtle's personalities weren't diverse enough from one another. I don't care if it stuck closer to the original Comics(which i was never a fan of to begin with, completely missed out on the comics.), i wanted the nerdy baxter stockman, Krang, Beepop and Rocksteady, the works. The 2012' CG Cartoon series actually looks a lot better. Haven't watched it yet, but i'll definitly be looking out for it. Now the original cartoon, nostalgia aside is just awesome. I absolutely love the light hearted goofy & fun take on it. Still holds up! I've always prefered the first 3 seasons, i think that's when the show truly shined. BTW, the first TMNT movie was amazing and if you think otherwise you're turtle slime! :p

Shredder is possibly one of the most bad a** villians in movie history. Absolutely Loved the INtense Shredder/Turtle battle on the roof top in combination with the awesome track that played at the end of the film. One of the first movies i ever saw in the theatres, and the kids went absolutely wild over it!

I loved the fact that the first movie went more off of the comics than the cartoon series at the time. I think that was the problem with the second movie, by adding Tokka and Rahzar in place of Bebop and Rocksteady just didnt seem right for a live action flick.

I know, Eastman and Lair HATE Bebop and Rocksteady. So instead off adding them they just made up two replacements. I think I am going to go rewatch the movie (again). Btw the TMNT comics (the originals) aren't as the dark as they make them out to be (they make it seem like the Dark Knight). There's a bit of blood but I don't remember them swearing much besides damn and a couple small biddies.

I hate the CGI for the new Turtles show. If looks so weird. Also, I just can't accept Beast Boy's voice as Michelangelo's voice. Doesn't seem to fit imo. D:

Damn it my friend told me that while I was watching it (Beast Boy) now I can't un-hear it. Voice sounds similar to the older Mikey's to me though. (2003 and newer).

Who's Beast Boy?
And Tokka and Razzar were nowhere near as cool as Rocksteady and Bobop. Those 2 knuckleheads were such an awesome addition to the show.
But ya, I don't exactly want my turtles to be dark, i generally like it more light hearted, fun and humerous 'Michaelangelo style' but ultimately as long as there is a balance inbetween i'm absolutely cool with it. The first TMNT movie had that balance.

@Waveboy: Beast Boy is a character on Teen Titans original a DC comic series but a few years ago Kids WB did a cartoon series on it. The guy who does Mikey's voice in the new TMNT series also did Beast Boy's voice in Teen Titans. And check your spelling dude its Rahzar not Razzar and you call yourself a true Ninja Turtle fanboy :P

Oh I forgot to add that I am not to pleased about the animation of this new series. While dont get me wrong I love computer animation even though I prefer the hand drawn stuff. I just found this particular animation for the show blah. I mean why couldnt they have done good animation like Toy Story or Shrek heck I thought the animation in TMNT was better than this shows why couldnt they just use that?

Oh and if you didnt know Raphael is voiced by Sean Astin who was Samwise Gamgee in the LOTR trilogy.

I don't know. I can't see details like this. IGN's review says it's good.

As for the animation, it's pretty top-notch. The action sequences are fluid, fast-paced and exciting, and the dialogue-heavy scenes are usually peppered with entertaining slapstick. The show also adds a few interesting flairs here and there — for example, when the turtles are in fighting mode, their irises disappear, leaving only the whites of their eyes behind their masks; other times, the turtles' facial expressions are accentuated by chibi-style overlays that heighten the characters' emotions.

I cant ever seem to get too technical, I can't tell 1080p to 720 or 30, and 60 FPS.

Edit: Hah that's awesome. I was over at the Nick website reading/watching the online web comics. When it was over it had the TMNT NES Game Over music.

I grew up with the old cartoon and was a huge fan (though I don't think I have seen every episode). And I loved the first movie. Then the live-action series came, wich I never saw. Though I have a feeling I haven't missed much. Then the 2003 series came, wich was awesome. I have seen every episode! There was even a awesome tv movie at the end of it! Then I saw the CG movie wich wasn't that bad either! I saw live-action movie 2 and 3, wich weren't very good. I also saw the Power rangers cameo episode, wich wasn't that great either!

Wich brings me to today, the CG series! So far I like it! Of course it's not as good as the 2003 series, but absolutely better then what I expected! I hate the new Mikey voice though!

By the way: I have yet to watch the 2 special Japan-only episodes someday! There the turtles turn into very strange superheroes! Weird stuff!

Lets hope they don't screw up the new movie! At least from what I have heard Michael Bay isn't at the helm anymore, so there's hope!

I swear if she is April O'Neil I will totally boycott this movie.

Oh and it looks like Michael Bay is directing it.
