I find it a lot easier to catch a soccer ball, actually, but I'm not good at either in the first place, so maybe, just maybe, I don't know what I'm talking about.
As a Western Australian I take offense to that... Eastern Staters play Rugby but in WA its almost non-existent here its AFL, Cricket, Soccer (soccer != footy; AFL = footy) and then Basketball we probably play Gaelic Football more than Rugby............ then again, we could call WA not part of Australia most of the time

That had crossed my mind...
You seem worked up about something, with your 'Imperial Masters' and 'Soccer isn't English' comments.

My apologies, although surely Cricket is English as well?
And if we look for the origins of Aussie Rules football, what country do you think has a pretty good chance of being the source?
Also, how'd you get on in the Ashes this year, Aussie?
Stevie, not that that guy isn't talented, but when you've seen someone do almost everything that guy did except with a tiny footbag, it's not really impressive to see this.
This guys talents are recognised by the fact he has sponsorship deals, does awesome TV adverts and has won Freestyle competitions. Also what is there to say that some of the techniques he performed would actually be easier with a smaller object, I'm pretty sure I could balance a footbag on my head for a lot longer than a football.
How is it ignorant? I don't even notice when the world series or super bowl is, despite most of the country being excited about it. Am I ignorant for that? No, I simply don't like those sports and don't care.
If you don't notice as an individual, fair enough, if your country doesn't notice, that's ignorance.
[/quote] A country is nothing but a group of individuals. Just because you think soccer is the ultimate sport doesn't mean someone in another country has to think so. I mean seriously, it's just a game. It has nothing to do with ignorance.
The whole attitude of "England invented everything ever" coupled with the "America is ignorant" comment is really not painting the prettiest picture. I know looking down on America is popular around the world, but for whatever reason it hasn't caught on here. Maybe we just need a star to make it popular, like Beckham was supposed to do for soccer.
Edit: "Angry yank"? I was thinking the opposite. I'm not upset, but you seem to have something going on.
Adam, we are not going to go back and forth, Football is English, you can shout, you can scream, you can say what you like, you will not change the established facts.
Feel free to believe what you like, put 'Football isn't English' on your gravestone if you like, it makes no difference.
Also no-one has said 'England invented everything ever', you seem confused.
I know, despite the fact that the game has been played around the world since the invention of the ball. Definitely pretty silly. But really, who cares. All I have a problem with is an entire country being labeled ignorant. If you want to go back and forth making witty comments about the disputed origin of football, the thread is going to get many more pages than it should have.
Edit: I said your "England invented everything ever" attitude. I'm sorry that you have a reading comprehension problem, but I didn't say you said that, just that it was an attitude. Fortunately Machu seems to have recognized that was a joke, at least.
Adam, you have plenty of stars playing in the Premier League, in fact I shall be cheering Clint Dempsey on for the next 90 minutes (nothing to do with Fantasy Football, honest).
And yes, England invented everything, including football.

I don't object to this. I think AFL seems most like a combination of Gaelic Football and Rugby so your general point is probably right. The thing I objected to was saying that Australia plays Rubgy because West Australians do not.... or at least here Rugby is below a bunch of other secondary sports including Hockey, Baseball and such.
Also, how'd you get on in the Ashes this year, Aussie?
...
A friend of mine was living in London when we lost the Ashes (bloody Ponting). He doesn't follow the Cricket but, apparently, every time he talked to someone they would badger him about the Ashes because of his accent. He couldn't even enjoy a criminally un-chilled beer during your mild summer weather you guys called a heat wave.

"Don't stir the pot" is a nice way of saying "they're too dumb to reason with"
The sad thing is, I don't know who Clint Dempsey is, or who any of our "stars" are. It is hard to know when games are on TV because they rarely get televised here, so I pretty much can't follow my own teams. It's rare for even the MLS (our soccer league) to make it on cable, at least on any channels I catch.

Again, you seem confused between football, as in kicking something, and a game of Association football.

The origin of Association football is not disputed.

The other forms of Football that were played at the time of its inauguration went on to become Rugby, Aussie rules football, Gaelic football or just died out, therefore Football or Soccer as we know it today was invented in England.
Football is documented in historical texts as originating in England, you cannot argue with fact.
Anyway back to the topic of the thread I am looking forward to the World Cup and was relatively happy with England's group, hopefully both us and the USA can progress from group stages.
Incidentally I need USA man Clint Dempsey to play well today for his club Fulham to score me some points in the NL Fantasy Football League.
Edit @ Machu - You have Dempsey aswell, damn I was hoping to catch up to you with some points from Dempsey.
