J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode IX

Lucasfilm announced today that J.J. Abrams will take over as director for Star Wars: Episode IX after Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow departed the project.

Given that Star Wars: The Force Awakens was essentially A New Hope in a slightly different costume, I thoroughly hope that Episode IX doesn’t go the way of Return of the Jedi. Let’s enjoy The Last Jedi before worrying about the next film, which won’t be out until 2019 at the earliest.

I think the trailer was great! It showed us "The Last Jedi" will definitely be different than episode V and there seems to be a lot of decision making on whether there is a light and dark side. I wasn't too sure about the new trilogy but it seems to be going the right route.

I'm not that excited to be honest...

Maybe it's just a bad trailer.

Yeh, I don't think it's a great trailer. But I'm hoping that's because they've purposefully left out most of the stuff that isn't predictable.

@gcunit I hope so too, and that it's just a bad trailer.

Trailer was amazing! Speeders taking on AT-AT walkers, A new force user training with a jedi master in hiding and meeting the main bad guy with a proposed union at the end....erm....hold up...AWW MAN THEY DONE IT AGAIN! Force Awakens was A New Hope and this reeks of Empire. Dagnabbit.

I came across the Super Smash Wars video shorts today. They seem to be very well made Star Wars x Nintendo animations, and the creator, James Farr, has done one (split into 2 parts) for Star Wars Episodes 4-7.

Can we already talk episode 8? I need to vent some frustrations...

@Octane You can with me - I've seen it. I'm generally as frustrated as most of the internet about it, but will retain a slither of hope that IX will make some of it right. It just has a list of issues as long as a star destroyer.

Waiting a few weeks to avoid any crazy crowds.

I really hope Episode VIII is less safe and mediocre than VII was.

@gcunit If you wouldn't mind, could you explain what you liked and didn't like? I'm interested to see what others thought of it.

I'm going to see it a second time later today by the way.

Anyway, onto the spoilers, just some quick thoughts:

The issues I have with The Last Jedi is that they tried to turn every character into a comedy. Yes, some were funny, but they relied too much on jokes, which kinda destroyed any impact the serious moments had. I think nearly every character almost died at least once, if not multiple times. I thought Luke died, but then they revealed he wasn't there to begin with, so he gets to live, right? WRONG. I don't understand why he wasn't there in the first place if he was going to die five seconds later anyway. The casino scene was a bit unnecessary I think, it felt more like a separate story line than anything else. And there were plenty of other unexplained scenes, the mirror scene for example? What was that? What was the point, why was it calling Rey? When did they establish Jedi tele-communication as cannon? How did Leia do that superhero thing the first time she almost died? Maz Kanata scene felt forced as well, like they had to give her her 10 seconds of fame in the film. On a positive note, The Last Jedi relied less on easter eggs and references than The Force Awakens, so that's good.

@Octane

I have many issues, but I guess my overriding general one is that this is supposedly still part of the Skywalker saga, and so I have what I think is a reasonable expectation for it to follow in tone and style to what has come before. I didn't take to Force Awakens straight away, but having seen it many times now I'm really happy with how it fits the old and the new together. Last Jedi seems to go too far in disposing of the new, and doesn't carry on/answer many of the questions posed by Force Awakens. Repeated viewings could help, but right now I'm a bit angry at how un-classic-Star Wars it feels.

I can take Poe's humour - that's established and while tonally jarring, is kinda fun. But then Finn dancing around in a leaking bacta suit - that was taking 'silly' way too far.
I didn't like a lot of the dialogue between Rey and Luke. Rey's delivery seemed to lack something particularly, and some of Luke's words just didn't sound right to me. But I'm a massive Luke fan, so maybe I just need time on that one... But in general I didn't like this idea that Luke would just give up and be waiting to die.

I hate, hate, hate how much R2-D2 has been sidelined in this trilogy. While his part is significant in changing Luke's thought process, he's barely in the film at all - the character that saved the day so many times in the first 6 saga films. Sacrilege.

Yoda looked odd - if you're going to bring in a classic cameo - do it perfectly. This was off.

Rey's story didn't really develop very much, and we got a very unsatisfying explanation about her parents (which I don't buy but now have to wait 2 years in the hope it's untrue). She barely features after the Snoke battle.

The lack of backstory on Snoke - disappointing - again having to hope there's a twist in IX.

The idea that Luke had concerns about Ben, but instead of bringing Leia into it he just decided to sneak up on him in his sleep.... no.

Holdo not telling Poe about her plan... kinda forcing him into mutiny.

Leia being seemingly unconscious but able to Force herself back into the cruiser from space, but never uses the Force at any other time...?

The running time of the film being 2.5hrs - it's too long, and apart from introducing those stable kids that are obviously going to play some part in the future, that whole jaunt to Casino land was a waste of time.

It's kinda difficult to come up with specific things I liked. I like Poe.

I just feel like they've blown it....

I'm seeing it again on Sunday unless plans change.
