@skywake: Two factors can contribute to something that one alone would not. Yes, the games are more important, but their infrastructure does count. It's so bad, I have a friend that was on the fence about the 3DS and when he heard they shut down Flipnote Hatena he lost interest. I was interested in The new 3DS, but the lack of the regular model, AC adapter, and Miiverse friend messaging made it too hard to justify.
So, to my understanding, the NNID connects to The Nintendo Account(that connects to everything else), then there is the My Nintendo reward program.
This will probably get VC and possibly compatible indie games on NX. That is what I think, and hopefully cross-play on 3DS and Wii U, but I'm pretty sure at least NX is supposed to share as much library as it can with the other devices.
Am I the only person who buys consoles for the games you can play on them? All of this account based stuff is really just for convenience. If it has a game I want on that platform I'll buy into that platform. I never consider whether or not friend lists are unified or messaging friends is possible.
I buy for the whole experience, a perfect example of how account based things has put me off purchasing a console was the Xbox One while Don Mattrick was still head of Xbox. There were some cool games announced but I hate the concept of always online and some of the other features that suggested a digital only future. Then thankfully he was fired and Phil Spencer took over making the Xbox One a fantastic looking experience which only needed a gigantic Nintendo game drought for me to get one (that turned out to be Summer 2015).
@Therad:
I think the point is more that on your smartphone, tablet or PC you are already logged into Google, Facebook and/or Twitter. And ontop of that people who will be downloading these mobile games won't necessarily have an NNID. So instead of having a "create a NNID" step when people want to play these mobile games they're going to let people login with an account they already have.
It's pretty much a standard thing for a lot of services.... and Nintendo explained why
It is generally said for any account system that more than half of people registering accounts quit halfway through the process. Every one of you must share the same experience of not being able to recall your account name or password when trying to log in. Accordingly, we have focused on making the new account easy to create or easy to sign up as well as easy to use, namely, it is harder for members to forget about it.
Specifically, for our new account, you can log in with your Facebook, Google or Twitter account. Alternatively, you can log in with a combination of your email address and your password. Of course, you can continue using your Nintendo Network ID as well.
Well, my point was that it should be easier if they want people to use it. Which seems to be in line with your and nintendos opinion. (not that I like all these "everything-must-be-connected" stuff)
@Vincent294@Grumblevolcano
I can understand why such factors would tip you over the line. I just don't see how it would be anything but a low order issue. I think it's just something we tell ourselves to justify our points of view after the fact.
For example I got a new PC rather than get a PS4 or XBOne when I wanted to play some of these shiny new current gen games. And I could argue now after the fact that it was because there were no subscription fees or something. Or I could say it was because the sales are better or something along those lines. But that would be a load of bull. I got a new PC because I already had quite a collection of games on Steam and I like to use it for stuff other than games.
So I call BS on those sort of rationales. I don't think they're a big factor for the vast, vast majority of people. Case and point being the fact that both of you own these two platforms that you're complaining about. I don't think friends lists, blu-ray playback, account systems and so on sway people that much. I would argue that for the vast majority of people it's a simple question of whether or not your friends have it and whether or not it has games you like. That's it. The "issues" we're talking about here only become factors when we're on the fence
If you just want to play good games and can only afford one or two consoles/handhelds/pc stuff like the account system, secondary functions like dvd/bluray player capability become very important. And most people can not afford multiple consoles.
I personally think that for the sake of each country getting fairly good physical rewards , I personally think that all Nintendo governments (NOA NOE NOJ ETC) should come together to make ONE and put the rewards on ONE website therefore everyone gets the rewards they like from different Nintendo governments rather than just make one website for each individual country like what club Nintendo did . Now the chances of this happening is very slim but it would be awesome to see.
I'm curious about the "Play Games" part of the new Point/Reward program. Hope it's nothing to do with achievements, but would be rad if we get reward points or w/e for just putting time into a game.
Wait so the accounts that we have created in the eshop will be erased?
You can link it to your NNID, Facebook, Google and Twitter. Linking it to your NNID gives you access to all of your purchase history under that NNID on 3DS and/or Wii U. It also means you can purchase content to be remotely downloaded to your console through your browser. There's also a section titled "discounts just for you" which is apparently empty.... which will probably be filled with cross-platform discounts and rewards etc

I hope there is more deals and offers. Club Nintendo had the occasional discount for the Zelda Symphony but I feel like Nintendo could have a lot more deals without suffering much of a loss. Also cheaper download games.
I'm thinking Japan will serve as the unfortunate guinea pig for testing the infrastructure for Nintendo Accounts. There will be growing pains. I'm hoping all this works out well and not too many problems pop up that could cause a delay for the West.
