No, leave Zelda alone, there's one series that DO NOT need a reboot.
There he goes, Firkraag. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die. - My VGscore

I died inside when I read the topic header. What are you trying to do to me? The futuristic (yet ancient) idea I can handle, but cars? I'm going to cry now.

Making Zelda in our time would ruin the series. Plus the official art shows that he's wearing the same clothes in the next game.

Uhhh, no. If Nintendo wanted to make a game like that, it wouldn't be a Zelda game, and Nintendo wouldn't publish it. It would be picked up by a company that no ones heard of, and becomes a hit.

Something about this thread reminds me of the CDi games, which is always a bad thing

I didn't know the CDi games took place in the present time. As bad as they were, I don't blame you

Something so terrible that just explaining about it would make this site crash

I very much disagree. It's as stale as stale gets right now, and from Miyamoto's last comments, that doesn't seem to be changing.
But bringing Link to 2009 is not the answer, either. Take the series too far out of its setting, and it might as well be a new series with similar game play. Otherwise they'd have to make all these contrived connections between the settings to force pieces of Zelda (the game, not the princess) where they don't belong (again, the game, not the princess, you dirty, dirty person).
Come on, friends,
To the bear arcades again.

Screw our time, I would want a LoZ game set in the future, with computers, robots or mechanical fighting suits, hackers acting as Great Fairies to give you powerups, the Master Sword as some kind of No More Heroes-esque light-saber thing, and an all-pervasive Ganon entity infiltrating every piece of machinery on whatever planet Hyrule is on in order to fulfill his own vile desires for death and destruction.
Link would be some dumb high-school kid who receives his part of the Triforce by accident (intercepted a package, won a contest, stole it in an attempt to prove his bravery to his buddies, yadda-yadda) and ends up swept into the quest to stop Ganon and save the world as he knows it... Zelda would be the daughter of the king or president or whatever ruler this Hyrule has, of course, and her part of the Triforce would grant her vast knowledge (though not the power or ability to implement much of it, thus she has to sit back and let Link do all the work), while Ganon(dorf)'s part of the Triforce gives him the ability to directly interface with technology, and thus the Ganon entity/living virus/whatever comes to him and awakens his inner evil.
I know, I know, it sounds cliche as hell, but something like that would be a day-one purchase for me, while I continue to be on the fence about Spirit Tracks... :/

That game would sound very little like a Legend of Zelda game...

@Iz2009: that was kinda the point. if Nintendo were to finally reboot the series, I'd like them to go all-out to make it look, feel, and play differently than the same old, same old. How about Ganondorf in a giant mecha-like battle suit, commanding an army of robots and soldiers that have had their minds altered with brain implants infused with the 'spirit' of Ganon? or a battle against Dark Link where DL himself is actually an offshoot of Link's own mind (the embodiment of his own dark desires?) that must be defeated, as it appeared after Ganon(dorf) attempted to enlist Link to his side with promises of wealth, power, and immortal life as a part of his programming code (e.g. Link is infected and must battle himself lest he be taken over and essentially become Dark Link)? :3
