There must be other Mario games you still love but nobody talks about. Discuss your underrated Mario game(s) here.

I'm a Earthbound and Gravity Falls Fan. They're both awesome.

Currently playing:
EarthBound (New 3DS Virtual Console), Donkey Kong Country (New 3DS Virtual Console), Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D

Everyone is gonna say Mario 2 but at this point it feels like saying Tron is an underrated movie. In other words, this was true 15+ years ago maybe, but nowadays certainly isn't.

I'm gonna go with Mario Land 1. It's a strong, simple Mario 1-like game, and fully succeeds at being Gameboy Mario 1. It's a great game to play when you need to kill a half hour.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U
Both are referred to as copy/paste. Yet both contain their very own original ideas.
New Super Mario Bros. 2 contains more replay value than most, if not all 2D Mario games, by asking you to grab as many coins as possible. It also truly emphasised the idea of "It's about the journey, not the destination" in a way Mario hasn't before.
New Super Mario Bros. U, was the closest attempt to a game with Super Mario World-esque levels yet. As a matter of fact, I consider it the Sonic CD of the New Super Mario Bros. series (In which it has mastered the core gameplay of the games). And I would consider it my favorite 2D Mario game, because of it.

Super Mario 3D World. #UnnecessaryHate

I play all Smash games competitively, and I like all Smash games equally. I don't have a favorite, they're all awesome.

Super Mario Sunshine. I think it's one of the best games of all time, but yet I hear so much hate for it.

You should say #NonExistantHate because literally nobody hates that game.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

WTF. I see hate for this game EVERYWHERE... other than this site. So don't say there's "non-existent hate" when it's all over the place.

It must be exhausting to be so bitter and angry every waking moment of your life. I'm sorry.

But yeah, SM3DW is a widely-loved game and considered by many to be one of the best Mario games of all time. It's not even sort of "hated." At worst, there's a small pocket of people butthurt that it's not Galaxy 3. But then, no Mario game truly is hated. NSMB2 probably comes the closest, but its most scathing detractors just say that it's kinda "meh."

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

The usual consensus in the internet seems to be that SM3DW is stupidly fun and great with friends.

I think Land was slightly more hated.

Meowph, that's right!

Okay... that was rude.

Anyway... I see SM3DW get a lot of hate on a lot of sites. Most of the complaints are so STUPID, it makes me angry. That's why I consider it "underrated". I can list reasons why the hate for the game is so stupid, if you want me to.

I would probably say Mario & Luigi Partners in Time. Nowhere near as good as the rest of the Mario & Luigi series, but damn, it was still a pretty great game for the time, and the graphics and music were fantastic.

  • Super Mario Sunshine - best presentation, most together and most personality of the Super Mario games
  • New Super Mario Brothers - one of the best stories within 2D Mario, fresh take on enemies to bosses, easy to the point of being a bit humorous (final Bowser with a Mega Mushroom in stock)
  • New Super Mario Brothers 2 - arguably the most replay value in a Super Mario game with its gold-vomiting designs and coin collection goals, really fun co-op without cluttering the experience with four players, really great bonus in Coin Rush and its DLC packs
  • Super Mario Land 2 - I don't think I've had as much freedom in a 2D Mario as to how to complete the different "worlds". I think the game has a very wacky cast coupled with a solid soundtrack. One of the most interesting finales in any Super Mario game.
  • Mario & Luigi Partners in Time - Not as good as Superstar Saga definitely, but I think PiT is in the argument for second. The game is a fun RPG with a very creative presentation across the DS's two screens. Plot-wise, I love the game, and I think it's a crime that the Shroobs didn't make an appearance in either of the Super Mario Galaxy games.

I thought 3D World was meh. The fun factor ran out with me at around World 4.

On topic, I freaking love Super Mario Land 2. It's not being talked about much. It had great controls, catchy music, and lots of level variety (something needed DESPERATELY in recent Mario games). I really never get tired of playing it.

Yeah, in presentation, but it's hard to say NSMB2's level desigin is reminiscent of any of the previous Mario games, from the campaign, to the DLC it has some of the greatest and most unique Mario levels in that game.

Is Super Mario 64 underrated now? It was hugely praised when it first came out, but nobody seems to ever mention it anymore after Sunshine and Galaxy 1&2 came out. While I liked the latter, to me Super Mario 64 was downright magical. I spent a stupid amount of time running around in that game aimlessly as a tween.
