Just saw it in 2D, 48fps. Wow.
I had lowered my expectations due to some negative reviews and a low metascore. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least.I had absolutely no problems with the length of the film. I didn't find that it dragged at all, something that isn't even true about any of the LOTR films. The CG and makeup was noticeable but very well done. The overall style of the film was extremely over the top. It did bother me at first, being the hardcore Tolkien junky that I am, though I quickly got used to it. The movie is far lighter and sillier than LOTR. Once you accept that, everything makes sense.
I think that 48fps worked okay. I definitely noticed it, though the 3 people I was with did not. I found it hard to focus on the screen at times, especially at the beginning. I'm not sure whether that's because I am not used to it or because the frames were actually too fast for my eyes to catch. I won't say that I was 100% accustomed to it by the end. It did get better though. Some scenes were improved by the clarity that 48fps provides.
The acting, plot, cinematography, music, visuals and action were all top-notch. I absolutely recommend The Hobbit. I can't wait to see the other 2 films!
And you guys were right - the Gollum scene was awesome.
Pretty much exactly how I felt. I didn't like the special effects, it felt kind of stupid to use CGI orcs instead of what they did in LOTR. Other than the special effects I loved it. anyone know if it's much better in 3D?
