Well, for famous Mexican skeletons, you can see the two most obvious: Frida Kahlo and El Santo. But there's also those two I mentioned before, along with Maria Felix and Cantinflas. I'm sure some others are cameos, but those are the most noticeable.
Frida Kahlo feels super spot on. Even her obsession with herself and the female body, and her condition are represented... Frida, in real life, also helped popularize the Xolo dog breed, and Alebrijes, which makes her dialogue in the movie fitting.

My parents didn't need to use folk tales. They would simply say the local crazy lady would be the kidnapper. Which now that I think about it, was rather cruel of them.
