I tried to get into the Lord of Shadows series but I just couldnt. I rented the first one on 360 and yeah it just didn't feel like a Castlevania game. Yeah it had the characters and the atmosphere but gameplay it just felt like every other action game out there, just a souless button masher.

The only one I enjoyed was Mirror of Fate on the 3DS.

Yeah, very. But I'm so immersed in the characters, design, story, development. While the game play for some can be ok, it's not as good as previous gameplay wise. Very Metroid tho.

@Tasuki:

I definitely recommend it, specially if you like a little adventure/exploration in your games. Just keep in mind that you'll need a guide at some point, when you reach one or two areas and it's impossible to know what to do, as WaveGhoul said, WTF moments that doesn't make sense. Other than that I don't remember it being very difficult, part of the fun is to get lost and figure out where to go next, and for the most part is possible to do it except for those WTF moments.

But as I always say, before spending any money try it on an emulator and see if it's your cup of tea =)

Changing subject, did you like Castlevania III? I thought it was a great but very difficult! I managed to beat it but definitely one of the hardest games I've ever played. If you liked it I recommend the first one (not as difficult except for the Death battle), SC IV, Rondo of Blood and Rebirth. All of them great games.

But with all that said and done, my personal favourite 3D Castlevania was definitely Castlevania: Judgement. It's not a great game, it's quite the disappointing Castlevania game, and it's not even a competent fighter, but goddamn, did I enjoy myself playing this game! I just loved the cool design reimaginings (especially Grant and Cornell), the soundtrack, and especially the over-the-top finisher moves! Judgement was the one Castlevania game that got me into the whole lore of the franchise and made me read up on how the individual games refrenced one another on several occasions. Also, Aeon is by far the most awesome guy I've ever played in a Castlevania game, even with his flat personality!

Oh yeah! I loved Judgment too! Unfortunately it has a lot of flaws and the multiplayer is a mess, but as a single player I thought it was very fun to play and the last boss was epic. Music was fantastic too. I still play it to this day.

Too bad they had a low budget for this one as it could had been a lot better with more time and money.

@soma: Castlevania III is the game I love to hate or hate to love . That game made me rage so much as a kid lol. Even Battletoads didn't frustrate me like Castlevania III did. Even to this day I haven't been able to beat it and I still play it from time to time thinking that this will be the time I will only to end up getting frustrated lol.

For the record I have played the following Castlevania games.

Castlevania III
Rondo of Blood (currently playing it)
Bloodlines (Beat it great game)
Super Castlevania IV (Beat it)
Dracula X (Didn't really care for it)
Symphony of the Night (My favorite of all time, beat it alot)
Harmony of Dissoence (beat it it was decent)
Aria of Sorrow (beat it, loved it)
Dawn of Sorrow (beat it, great game the whole reason I bought the DS)
Portrait of Ruin ( Beat it Probably my second favorite Metroidvania one)
Lord of Shadows (Nice atmosphere and charcters, horrible game play)
Mirror of Fate (surprising I enjoyed it)

I also played the N64 ones but didn't like them at all and the PS2 ones but never got far in them to make a decesion.

I beat Castlevania III on Wii VC. My what a horrible experience. Unlike The Revenge of Shinobi I didn't find myself liking it by the end. It had some cool parts but the tedium of dying over and over and over again and having to repeat long boring sections as a result really dragged the game down for me. I just don't have the reflexes for it. Maybe switching to Grant sometimes would have helped, but ehh, I wanted to be a Belmont.

Then I bought the original Castlevania on 3DS VC and liked it. That was nice as the Castlevania III game that everyone seems to love had turned me off from the rest of the series for a while. Long before that, I had played SCIV and Dracula X on an emulator, enjoying the former but not the latter. Apart from those I've played Circle of the Moon on Wii U VC, a pretty good game with some memorable music.

Castlevania III is one of the best, if not the best Castlevania game. I love the multiple paths, playable characters and endings. An amazing game. I finished the game as a kid, so I didn't consider it as very hard as I was used to the difficulty(and still am).

I see we have similar tastes except for the N64 games, if you rank Portrait of Ruin that high I should probably try it as soon as possible lol. You should also try Order of Eclessia, personally I liked it a bit more than Dawn of Sorrow but they're about the same quality.

You should also play the first Castlevania for Nes, just like the third one but shorter and not as difficult except for one corridor before the fight against Grim Reaper. That area is so cheap, with lots of medusa heads, armored knights and then the Boss, and to make it worse, 4 hits and you're dead! If you've seen the Angry Nerd video you'll know what I mean.

But I guess if you download it for WiiU or 3DS the frustration will be greatly reduced with save points.

@soma: Lol yeah I have seen the AVGN video on it multiple times, he's one of my favorite youtubers.

Yeah I should try Castlevania at some point, same with Order of Ecclesia. I highly recommend Portrait of Ruin especially if you have played Bloodlines on the Genesis since it is a direct sequel to Bloodlines.

Castlevania III is probably the single most difficult game I have ever beaten. It's simply ruthless even when using the 10 lives cheat code, which I fully admit to doing. That being said, I think it's slightly better than the first game, at least during some of the easier stages.

Great to see people here talking about Bloodlines, which happens to be my second favorite game in the series behind Super Castlevania IV.

@ThePirateCaptain: I honestly thought Bloodlines was brilliant. It was interesting that they decided to tie in book Dracula into the Castlevania series and I liked the two hero idea. I honestly thought Bloodlines was over shadowed by Castlevania IV and some people just pick IV over Bloodlines due to their blind loyalty to Nintendo. To me each game was good in their own way. IV had Simon able to whip in 8 directions while Bloodlines gave you two characters to choose from which had their own unique style of play. Both had great graphics and music and most importantly both felt like a Castlevania.

Yeah, Bloodlines tends to get overlooked a bit, but I think more people appreciate it nowadays. The spritework is gorgeous, especially for the Genesis. It's just bursting with color and detail, and the varied environments just make it more noticeable. I've been meaning to go back and replay it with Eric since I did my first playthrough with John Morris. The fact that they gave you an option of two characters was a nice boost to the replayability.

@ThePirateCaptain: You will also find that there are different paths you access with Eric within a level that John couldn't and the other way around which really adds to the replayability. And the graphics and artwork are indeed gorgeous. Yeah SFIV had the rotating room and such but you gotta admit the reflection effects in that one level in Bloodlines were really neat too. I think what impressives me alot with Bloodlines is the fact that Konami took the time to make a Castlevania game that worked with the Genesis' hardware and made it impressive and made it feel like a Castlevania. The didn't look at the Genesis and say oh its doesn't have the color palette like SNES or the sound chip etc so let's just give them a watered down version of SFIV and be done with it. They gave Genny owners who happen to be Castlevania fans a great game worthy of the Castlevania name.

Yeah, Genesis owners may have had to wait a while to get their Castlevania fix, but they certainly didn't get the short end of the stick. If only modern developers took that kind of approach....

@ThePirateCaptain: If only.

So I decided to Download Simon's Quest on my 3DS. And I am enjoying it. Yeah the transitions times from day to night do get annoying really fast and the cryptic nature of the game as well but overall it's not as bad as people say but then again I do have things like Gamefaqs to help me out. Now I need to get an NES so I can play that hacked version.

Do you guys recommend Castlevania: The Adventure? I know it has terrible reviews and the gameplay looks very slow.... but maybe is not that bad?

Hey Castlevania fans, I'd like to ask a question that is a bit related to the first Castlevania... just a bit
For people that played the Nes version years ago, do you remember the color of the Grim Reaper, or the color of the face of the zombie things on the first level?

Long story short, I just bought a WiiU and noticed there's a difference in the colors I get on TV and the Gamepad, I adjusted the Tint on the TV assuming the gamepad had the correct colors. On my TV they appear a bit more purple and on the Gamepad they're blue.
The same happened in Super Mario Bros, in the Gamepad the sky is blue but on my TV is purple-blueish... I found pictures of both on them so don't know which is correct. In fact, if you have the Street Pass games and have the Super Mario background, you'll notice it's not sky blue so that got me thinking, what if my TV was displaying the correct colors?

So, do anyone remember which was the correct colors on a Nes and old TV?

Here, take a look at this. This is like it appears on my TV:

And here's like the Gamepad:

Thanks in advance! And yes.... I know I'm kinda nerd in stuff like this

@soma:
I think your TV was a bit closer to the original color. The Grim Reaper should be purple if my memory serves correctly.
