@ReaderRagfihs it was just a button masher that people liked because of the blood.
the more recent games on consoles are better (not really button mashers, fighting is more combo oriented).
the original arcade trilogy got by on just shock value.
I dare anyone to play the 90s MK games and tell me they've aged well with a straight face.

Button masher but had graphics and shock value going for it. It did grow into a much better series tho.

@ReaderRagfihs Don't agree with the button masher label. You could mash your way through, to some extent, but some of the more effective moves and/or combos definitely had to be mastered and people who had done that, could easily beat the average button masher.

And a healthy number of these moves, especially the finishing moves (not just gory fatalities, by the way) were an ab-so-lute pain to pull off, with you not just having to execute the move perfectly, in as little time as possible, but if your character was too far away from or too close to your opponent, it didn't even work, so mastery was definitely needed in those cases.

Personally, I could do the whole fireball, helicopter kick and chain attacks thing in Street Fighter with my eyes closed. The more intricate moves in Mortal Kombat, not so much...

But if I had to choose, I would go with Street Fighter. I just have a longer history with that series. The newer MK installments are pretty good, though. And I like the mini games in between fights. I also like the other series from the same studio, Injustice.

Motor Kombat needs its own game.

@BenGrimm Was that the Kart game in Mortal Kombat for the Wii? I don't remember the actual names of the mini games, just the games themselves.

Either way: if that was indeed it, then I would agree. It was a rather decent kart racer. And actually considerably better than most other Mario Kart wannabees.

@ThanosReXXX

Yeah that’s the one, not sure if it was a Wii exclusive or in every version of Armageddon tho.

Not Street Fighter related, but going back to Smash character debates: I remember poking fun at the idea of PAC-MAN being playable because in the original game he was only animated with two sprites; mouth open and mouth closed, and so these two states must comprise his entire move set. Or so I naively thought.

Ridley I was ambivalent on. I was never really committed to the ‘too big’ argument, but I didn’t madly try to disprove it either.

One think I found strange was the groundswell behind Geno on Miiverse, given that the average age there was pretty low, and he was an assistant character from a SNES Mario RPG that has never seen a sequel or really any major reference in the last 22 years. Madam Flurrie or any other Paper Mario partner seemed just as likely (or unlikely) as little old Geno, and that’s not to mention Paper Mario himself (although that would draw ire from people saying there are already too many Mario characters, but oh well).

Anyway, as the character list still isn’t 100% confirmed, I suppose the debate technically isn’t over, so maybe it doesn’t belong in the ‘arguments of yesteryear’.

@BenGrimm Probably in every version. Only played the Wii version, though, so I'm not sure, but it would seem pretty unlikely that they would make the effort to make an actually decent kart (mini-)game just for MK for Nintendo's console. Although the Wii did sell like hot cakes, so who knows...

@Maxz I remember thinking Olimar would never work. I've since learned to trust that Sakurai and co. can implement any character they darn well please if they put their minds to it. Piranha Plant? The Duck Hunt dog? Why the heck not?

I remember when he left out Animal Crossing characters for fighters because he couldn't envision them fighting at all, so that's partly why Assist Trophies came to play for stuff like Mr. Resetti. Then Smash 4 came around and while Villager did need to take from Balloon Fighter for the up-B, it was still a great way to incorporate AC into Smash. Really shows how Sakurai grew as a director over the years.

@EvilLucario I remember hearing that too. It reminds me of people arguing over whether characters like Villager and Wii Fit Trainer "deserved" to be in Smash because they aren't fighting characters.

Yet you could say the same about Mr. Game and Watch and Peach. Nobody complained then.

@GyroZeppeli Peach had fighting capabilities all the way back in Mario RPG, and there were elements of action in some Game & Watch stuff like Fire Attack. Not entirely the same as a carefree series like Animal Crossing to be honest.

Even though it’s not represented in Mr. Game and Watch’s moveset, Boxing was in the Game and Watch line, so Game and Watch characters did fight before Smash Bros.

GeoChrome

@EvilLucario Yeah, but Mr. Game & Watch and Peach aren’t really famous for action, at least in the mainline games. It’s the same thing for characters like R.O.B., it’s hard to picture them fighting, but a moveset is certainly doable.

@GyroZeppeli I think it's more about moveset potential people see. Before Smash 4, I don't think people thought a moveset could be realistically made for Animal Crossing characters due to said peacefulness and lack of "exciting action". Whereas with a character like ROB, there isn't much source material in the first place so they invented stuff like the exhaust fire and lasers that could fit in with a robot while adding what little source material available like the gyros.

Of course now that we have Animal Crossing and Piranha Plant, any worries about moveset potential should be silenced considering the sky's the limit.
