Hitler was an Apple fan? I knew it!

The more I think about it the more I know that I'll get one, and its utility is far from questionable, I think.

The thing is not a bigger iPhone. It's something like eight times as big as an iPhone. I dunno about you, but immediately its utility in buying videos from the iTunes site springs to mind. It's a portable digital video player.

Its utility as a ereader is limited, I feel. The fact that it's a computer, and so doesn't use eInk means the Amazon Kindle will always be better than it for reading extended blocks of text. However, for checking email or browsing the internet, or using YouTube, it's handy and portable.

So it's not really an iPod, it's not really an e-reader, and it's not a real computer. What it is is a portable media player device - it's easy to use and you'll be able to carry movies around with you without the hassle of discs or DVD players.

I like it, in concept. I don't think it's fair to write it off as an iPod Touch or iPhone until seeing it in action - after all, we don't call a plasma screen "just" an oversized TV - there is a point where a size difference in screens really does make an impact on the experience.

Except that we can compare it to similar devices.
Let's compare it to a netbook.

iPad:
Touch Screen
Can play movies and music
Supports apps in the app store
Does not support flash
Does not support java
Does not allow the user to download any content that is not from the app store
Does not allow user to dual boot, write programs, or anything that a more technical person might desire

netbook:
keyboard that allows you to type while viewing the display
Can play movies and music
Supports apps from anyone, anywhere. Many of them free.
Allows multitasking
Supports external USB devices (including an iPod!)
Supports flash
Supports Java

I am probably going to get this, and the number one reason is that I don't own an iAnything yet

Erm, so let me get this straight - the best reason you have for buying one is that you don't own any other Apple products?

And that's your best reason?

Um, no, not exactly. See, most people, like Iwata here, call it a bigger iPod touch. The case in point is I don't have an iPod touch yet, so it's not like I'm abandoning it for a larger one that does no new things, and when when it comes to multimedia excluding games, I think bigger is better.

But an iPod/iPhone/iPod touch you can carry in your pocket...
If you want to get a portable computer, get a portable computer (notebook, netbook, macbook).
If you want something that you can carry with you everywhere and listen to music, watch movies, play games, etc. whenever you want, get something that actually fits in your pocket.
imo.

What made you think I wanted that?

Portable does not necessarily mean fitting in a pocket; carrying an iPad with you everywhere is as easy as a small (non-electronic) notebook would be. I know because I actually printed out pictures and made a 1:1 scale model. It seems to suit its purposes (books, videos, internet) really well for the size.
imo.

I'm back with a shiny new 3DS, yay!

At least you don't have to worry about dropping a notebook or having someone steal it.
Plus the iPad, I imagine, is quite a bit tougher to hang onto with one hand, or under your arm, or whatever.

This is ground control to major Tom, you've really made the grade. And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare

I wouldn't say wealthy unless a person has like, a MacBook Pro in every room in of his/her mansion. I don't see why you think $200 is a large sum, but being a kid is factor. It sucks for us to not have salaries.
