The way everyone was talking about them and how they did this year I was hoping for a real nail biter. Did I miss something?

Maybe it was a lack of focus? They did do a sweep against the Yankees, after all. Meanwhile, the Giants came back from the abyss against the Cardinals to turn a 3-1 into a 3-4. I guess the Tigers just lost momentum.
