Also, I haven't seen any other NintendoLife threads that are about politics too, which is pretty weird...
i'm afraid we lock threads about politics (and on a related note, religion) on-sight here at NL. in a place like this, they're just flamewars waiting to happen, so we skip the fighting and get to the 'locked' part. sorry to disappoint :3
that said, sorry, not a fan.

What sort of place is this?
I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.
I like TED. We watched a talk about how to start a movement in science one day in eighth grade, and a clip from Salman Khan's presentation about Khan Academy in ninth grade. Since then I've watched talks from J. J. Abram's and Roger Evert on Netflix.

Surely discourse on politics should be allowed in a public forum?
I disagree with a flat-out ban on political discussions. Sure, some will get out of hand, but considering the number of adults that frequent this site it seems a bit odd.

Politics are great discussion-moving topics. Unfortunately this site caters to the "Oh let's make a list of THIS" type of threads, which is why everyone flips out when the original topic evolves.
A lot of people would be content with making lists and playing those forum games all day, which certainly hampers the amount of actual discussion the rest of us can have.

Well keep in mind we don't have freedom of speech here. And dragon's right; I personally witnessed political and religious discussion going downhill way too fast and to be honest people get way too offended over them. It's best just to avoid them overall

Back in the day we used to do it quite often here. I never had a problem with it, but it's not like I can't find another site to discuss politics and the like.
"The government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion."
I merely say I think Nintendo would benefit from Apple's resources and it's like I was insulting everyone's mother. At what point are we sacrificing actual discussion for the sake of protecting the emotionally fragile people at this site?

People could easily keep away from the threads.
I agree with this. Everyone would benefit from an Apple and Nintendo merger. For some people the thought of that idea means the end of the world.
On Topic: I've seen some science TED videos in class a few years ago. They were really good and the whole class was interested. I need to watch some of the gaming videos one of these days.
@Wheels: I said 'publicly-available', not straight-up 'public' — we have open registration and you can easily find us via Google, but we're not a democracy. lz is correct in that 'freedom of speech' on the internet is entirely at the discretion of the people running the particular forum(s) we all frequent, and we at NL choose to err on the side of not enabling the sort of holier-than-thou bickering, doing-it-for-the-lulz trolling, and tail-chasing flamewars that political and religious discussion has degraded into here in the past.

this is pretty much our stance on the issue. there are plenty of sites that welcome such discussion with open arms — NL isn't the be-all, end-all when it comes to forums on the internet. we just like video games and like being able to talk to other people about them (and the occasional other random topic) :3
on-topic: now that i think about it, i think i remember hearing about these TED talks a couple years ago... i'm wanting to say Sarah Silverman and some other dude had it out over whatever speech she gave? i don't quite remember.

I understand the distinction, and I understand that it's ultimately up to the moderators.
I just disagree that those topics should be flat-out banned. (Well, politics at least - religion is generally asking for trouble). The description for the "General Discussion" forum is 'Life and everything in it' when it should be something more like 'Select bits of life and a bunch of forum games'.

Your disagreement is noted. Can we please discuss the topic at hand now? :3

This thread is not about Apple being 'so much better' than Nintendo. Now can we please get back to the topic at hand?

What? lol
It was fairly obvious I wasn't talking about his thread..
Oh, I was joking. I was doing the very thing that you were talking about when people start going crazy when someone does something other than respond to the thread title/OT.
