hello everyone. im confused about something and i want you guys to answer to the best of your knowledge. im confused about the sequel to mario world. lets start with the most obvious. mario world 2. i know that its considered a prequel but hear me out. what if its just a retelling of what happened. like someone is telling mario the story of what happened because i believe in the begining of the game it says this happened along time ago or something like that. then that could be mario 5 (because world is 4 do the sequel would be 5) now if im completely wrong and its a prequel then theres two other options. theres new super mario bros which is very likely because it is the next game in the super mario bros series (the bros series are the sidescrollers with bros in the name the only excetion is world because they named it differently here on america and the super mario series are the 3d ones) then there is the next most likely sequel. new super mario bros wii. i say this is very likely and just a little bit more likely then new mario bros 1 because its the next console sidescroller. so what do you guys think?

Are we seriously going to try to create a Mario timeline? This isn't Zelda.

No, but Wrecking Crew is definitely late in Mario's life, as he no longer can jump due to faulty knees. Yoshi's Island is obviously the first chronologically, and it also explains Super Mario Bros. 2. Mario subconsciously remembered the traumatic images of Shy Guys trying to kill him as a baby, and they rested deep in his brain only to come out again in dreams.

They're all canon.

Early in his life, Mario took a long time to settle on a career. He tried refereeing boxing and tennis matches, but he yearned to be part of the action rather than just judging it. He settled on plumbing for a long time (most of the platformers), but later in life he eventually realized he needed to make more money to impress the ladies. He went to pharmacology school and became a doctor (Dr. Mario). Unfortunately, Luigi's addiction to over-the-counter opiate-based drugs (developed after a short stint as a ghost hunter---he just really needed to escape the nightmares, man) caused Mario to lose his license. You see, Luigi stole some drugs while visiting his brother at work, but Mario took the fall. That's why Mario eventually had to settle on a construction job (the aforementioned Wrecking Crew).

Best. Post. Ever.

But where does Luigi's Mansion fit into this? And how about Mario Pinball?

Well, you see, Mario's always had a repressed sinister side. He's the one who gave Luigi the mansion. Things weren't going to well as a pharmacist, and he needed some cash, quick. He can never forgive himself for indirectly causing his own brother's addiction, but that's medics for ya.
As for Pinball Land... well, not even Luigi's been able to get anything out of him. Mario's still locked in his room in the fetal position.

You see, Luigi stole some drugs while visiting his brother at work, but Mario took the fall. That's why Mario eventually had to settle on a construction job (the aforementioned Wrecking Crew).

At Wrecking Crew, as most of us know, Mario received a new rival in the greedy Foreman Spike, who would try to sabotage his job and take his pay for himself. One day, Spike went too far in his antics and almost destroyed the construction site, resulting in him being fired. He became insane over the years with hatred toward Mario for making him ruin his job. Spike became overweight, he shaved his beard and grew a very long mustache, and he even changed his name to Wario (meaning "Bad Mario") to cement his position as Mario's ultimate rival. He began wearing purple and yellow overalls and left the city he and Mario worked. He wandered the world for a few years, becoming greedier as he took up the hobby of treasure hunting. He learned that Mario was building a castle on an island one day, and in his envy, Wario got in contact with an alien named Tatanga, offering him to go to Sarasaland to conquer it and distract the heroic Mario while Wario would go conquer Mario Land in his absence. The deal was made, and Mario went off to participate in Super Mario Land, having to re-learn his old platforming ways again. Wario dabbled in hypnosis and hypnotized the creatures of Mario Land as well as bringing his strange friends he acquired from around Mushroom World (such as the Three Little Pigs) and took over the land. Then the events of Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins took place, then Wario Land.

After Wario Land, Wario placed a curse on Mario and his friends, forcing them to have buckets on their heads. Wanda the fairy helped them defeat Wario, and before Wario's Woods, Wario heard about Mario, Luigi, and Peach going on a vacation and leaving the Mushroom Kingdom, so Wario decides to invade the Peaceful Woods to conquer it. Toad, Birdo, and Wanda unite to stop Wario and defeat his minions, foiling Wario's last greatest attempt at threatening the Mushroom Kingdom.

After Wario Land 2 and 3, Wario met a disturbed man at a tennis court one day. This man had been a misfit all his life, not sure what he wanted to do for a living. He tried his hand at gardening and was moderately successful, until one day Luigi became his co-worker and accidentally ruined the sprinkling system, shutting down the place. Despite this, Luigi still went on adventures and participated with sports with his famous brother, earning him some fame and attention while his former co-worker had almost nothing after his job fell under. The man disliked how Luigi was successful despite his many flaws. He knew that Luigi was a skilled tennis player and decided to try tennis for the first time. He would practice for hours, and he became quite good. He finally figured out what he wanted to be, the rival of Luigi, and so he began to wear black and purple overalls, grew a handle-bar mustache, and changed his name to Waluigi ("Bad Luigi") since his old name was Gardener Needle. Interested in how similar he was to him, Wario offered to make Waluigi his partner, and they accept and participate in Mario Tennis.

Before the events of Wario Land 4, Wario began to feel lonely in his big castle and wanted to be more social, so he moved to a city on an island named Diamond City where many humans lived. Here, he fell in love with a beautiful, redheaded young woman named Mona and they went on treasure hunts together. Wario bought a house in Diamond City using the treasure he got from his past adventures and made more friends. He met Jimmy T. at the newly opened Club Sugar, impressing the dancer to become his friend after seeing his bizarre dance moves. Wario made friends with Kat and Ana when he helped them scare off some kindergarten bullies when they were out on a field trip in Diamond Park. Wario rode a taxi driven by Dribble and Spitz, and they became friends as well. Wario also befriended 9-Volt, who, being a Nintendo fanboy, practically freaked out at the sight of a popular Nintendo character like Wario. Dr. Crygor also got in good with Wario and designed a new motorcycle for him to help drive him around the city. Wario even foiled the ambitions of the alien Orbulon, discouraging him from taking over the world and making him another new buddy as well. After this, Wario was reading the newspaper at home and read a story about the Golden Pyramid, inspiring the events of Wario Land 4. Two years after this story, Wario got the idea of founding WarioWare, Inc. Mega Microgames and that story was set in motion.

Once that story was done, Wario moved back to his castle for a few months, only to be involved in the story of Wario World. After this, Wario met back with Waluigi and participated in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, and after the tournaments were done, Wario offered Waluigi a position in WarioWare, Inc., but Waluigi turned it down, still obsessed with defeating his rival Luigi, and he hasn't joined Wario on any of his adventures or worked for him in WarioWare, Inc. ever since because of it.

At the end of WarioWare Twisted, Ashley and Red moved to Diamond City and joined WarioWare, followed by Young Cricket and Penny before WarioWare Smooth Moves, with Penny coming back from a very long trip studying in other lands.

And now you know a good chunk of the Wario chronology.

Wow. That was deep. You left out his starting career as a carpenter. So technically, Mario started out and ended with being a construction worker.

I think the most important thing to figure out right now based on recent developments is...Where does Super Mario 3D World fit into the Mario timeline?

My guess is Hotel Mario was the last game Mario spent in the Mushroom Kingdom. In the final cut-scene of the game when Mario rescues Peach, she kisses both Mario and Luigi. Mario, who did all the work of rescuing her, felt a very strong resentment towards Luigi, as he realised Peach was more attracted to Luigi's thinner and taller body than his own. He decided to go into pharmaceuticals so he could could have a better job, and be more desirable than his more physically attractive brother.

Why anyone believes that game franchises such as Mario and Zelda must follow a specific timeline is beyond me. Just play the games and have fun. If you want a franchise where you can enjoy looking for continuity between titles then for god sake you really are looking at the wrong ones.

I was making a general point, because I've found people who believe such things exist beyond this one thread.
