strategy games are my 3rd favorite genre. they require you to think and plan more so than other games. they have a nice balance of action, tactics, and luck. they usually have pretty good plots that actually make 3 dimensional characters.
my favorite strategy game is Pikmin, then Advance Wars 2, then Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

StarCraft is pretty fun. I really wanted to play Ghost, but it got cancelled.

Video game wise: My life as a darklord and bloons tower defense. I really like strategy games, but each time i tell my self to get Fire emblem for gcn and ds, it never happens.

Same here. I like age of empires, tower defense games (like Starship Defense), and pretty much every other strategy game out there.

I'll echo what some others have said already: Starcraft and the Warcrafts (except WoW) are pretty groovy.

Me too. It seemed like they were almost done with it, what happened?

Same with Tiberium, though they weren't quite as far along. And it woulda been so cool, man.

Also, the Advance Wars series is really fun. I don't really like Fire Emblem, at least not the Wii one.

A: Two, one to hold the light bulb, the other to rotate the universe.

Yeah Advanced Wars is one of my faves, although it's really hard. Btw, am I the only one who finds turn-based strategy games to be harder than Real-Time Strategy games? I'm not kidding, I can get completely demolished in turn-based games, yet I can hold my own in an RTS. Maybe it's just because I play them more?

I'm the other way around. RTS games are often too action-orientated for me - and I generally feel being able to rapidly multitask is more important than actual strategising.

With turn-based strategy games, especially those that are close to table-top style strategy (There are way more complex strategy games than Advanced Wars out there - that's child's play), I do better. With those I'm able to form complex strategies, and react to my opponent's thoughts, rather than try and out click him.

I guess that's what makes it easier: The action-oriented part means I don't have to think as much. Well, that's not entirely true. What you described was just "Rushing", which is a pretty "n00b"-ish tactic. It's the simplest one that people can think of, and it works pretty well if you aren't prepared to combat it. Yes, RTSes do require multi-tasking and being able to react to a situation quickly, but there's still plenty of strategizing to be had. Especially if you're playing the campaign, where you're pretty much just thrust into a situation and you have to think your way through it. I like that, it's like puzzle solving. I like that in Turn-based games, but it always seems like I'm just doing trial and error - I can never properly predict how the CPU will react to a given situation, nor decifer what they are planning. I never have that problem in an RTS for some reason.

Oh, I'm aware that there's strategy involved in RTSes, and certainly don't think of them as "easier", but I do prefer the more complex thought processes of turn-based games to the quick thought and reaction-based strategy of RTSes.

Turn based games are all about controling the battlefield. Like chess, you need to act in a way that leaves the enemy with no choice on how to react.

That's much easier with games that involve what I consider to be basics of strategy games - the ability to flank, morale rules, supply chain and the ability for units to support one another. A game like Advance Wars doesn't have any of that - when the game is difficult, it's because the game weights itself in the AI's favour - granting more resources and units. It's a very simplistic strategy game, and ironically, it's more difficult for it.

Real wargames, with far more complex rulesets, are actually easier once you develop an understanding of military strategy. Unfortunately, there are very few strategy games, real-time or turn based, that properly encourage military strategy.

Rushing destroys me every time, no matter the RTS, if I play online. But I get destroyed in any non-turn-based game I play online, other than Smash Brothers, which I'm decent at, so I guess it's no surprise. I just like to make big bases. Screw going out and actually attacking people. That's why I liked C&C Generals so much. With the expansion, the terrorist army can build scattered, invisible bases very easily. I love pretending like I've been destroyed when I'm actually working on two other bases at the same time.

Red Alert was a lot of fun, too, since the map editor was so easy to use. I used to always play this map I'd made with a bunch of tiny islands and play with the max number of computers so that there would constantly be huge naval battles and people vying for space to expand bases. Man, I miss C&C. I wish the old games weren't so uncooperative with my stupid computer.

I generally prefer turn-based games, but RTS can be a lot of fun playing against the computer or someone of the same skill level.

Come on, friends,

Everyone that has a DS should have Civilization: Revolution. It's insanely addictive and I never tire of playing it.
