I know this will probably be spammed with Fire Emblem discussion posts, but whatev', I don't care anymore.

You know, I have to admit, I never expected to like strategy games. I did play card games, chess, checkers, tic-tac-toe, and all that, but I wasn't really that good at them, and since strategy games seemed so much more complex, I assumed I would never be able to handle them. All that changed when I finally played Shining Force, which was the first strategy-type game I can ever say I genuinely loved. Now it didn't quite convince me, since I pretty much just used trial-and-error and strong units to muscle my way through rather than focusing on strategy, but I liked it, it was a good beginners game that was lenient enough for you to be able to recover and learn from your mistakes. But still, I was unconvinced.

Oddly enough, it was RTSes that got me hooked. Seriously, I had always wanted to play them, and I dreamed of playing them before I even knew what they were, but I always felt they'd be too complex for me to handle. Once again, it too a beginner's game, in this case Halo Wars, to get me started, and to teach me the basics and get me hooked. I absolutely loved it, and I played it to death. After that I tried a bunch of other RTSes, and I once again got hooked, this time on Command & Conquer 3, my first entry into now my absolute favorite RTS series. Don't get me wrong, it was stupidly complex, and took me hours to eventually learn, but it was soooooo worth it, and I loved every minute of it. Now that I've discovered DOSBOX and got a bunch of retro PC games, I can honestly say I've been hooked to RTSes ever since.

I also like turn-based games as well, including 4X games, though I honestly find them more difficult than RTSes, with the exception of strategy-RPGes, which are my least favorite, since they tend to focus less on strategy and more on the RPG elemets, such as story, level-ups, and skills. Personally I prefer to lump them in with RPGs, but for the sake of this thread, they're strategy games through and through.

Okay, enough about me. This thread is for you guys to discuss your opinion on the genre, where it's going, how you got into it, which games are your favorites and least favorites, etc. Good luck, take your time, and happy gaming.

My faves:

RTS - Command & Conquer series, especially C&C3

Turn-based Strategy - Nintendo Wars series(the first and still the best)

4X games - Master of Orion(soooo many hours were sunk into this one, and I loved every minute of it)

Tower Defense - Defense Grid/Crystal Defenders/Defend Your Castle(So....addicting...@.@ )

Tactical-RPG - Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 2(Giant Robots for the win! The exaggerated anime cutscenes made this game)

Strategy-RPG - Shining Force series( My first and still my favorites)
honorable Mentions - Albert Odyssey and Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis(Because the deserve to be mentioned)

"Other" - Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen(it's so good, yet I don't even know what to call it.)

Least favorites:

RTS - Mech Platoon(WORST PATHFINDING EVER!)
Honorable Mention - Demigod(In the end, it was pretty mediocre cimpared to the games it was trying to emulate)

Turn-Based Strategy - Military Madness(A Famicom Wars clone that feels too much like the original with some tacked-on additions that simply brought it down in my eyes. Me no likey.>=( )

4X - Civilization IV(It's the only other one I've played. It's still good, just not as good as Master of Orion, which is king)

Tower Defense - Command & Conquer Tower Defense Mod(it was physically and utterly broken)

Tactical-RPG - Rondo of Swords(I just couldn't get into it for some reason)
Honorable Mention - Fire Emblem series(They're good, but soooo much more frustrating than they need to be)

Strategy-RPG - Um.....I'll get back to you on that one.

According to Wikipedia, Pikmin 2 is labeled as RTS. I know Wikipedia's usually wrong, but that's all I've got. I just hardly ever play strategy games.

....yeah, Dr. Mario is a puzzle game. Here's the definition of stategy:

Main Entry: strat·e·gy
Pronunciation: -jē
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural strat·e·gies
Etymology: Greek stratēgia generalship, from stratēgos
Date: 1810
1 a (1) : the science and art of employing the political, economic, psychological, and military forces of a nation or group of nations to afford the maximum support to adopted policies in peace or war (2) : the science and art of military command exercised to meet the enemy in combat under advantageous conditions b : a variety of or instance of the use of strategy
2 a : a careful plan or method : a clever stratagem b : the art of devising or employing plans or stratagems toward a goal
3 : an adaptation or complex of adaptations (as of behavior, metabolism, or structure) that serves or appears to serve an important function in achieving evolutionary success <foraging strategies of insects>

Actually, I can sorta see how you got that wrong, but believe me, Dr. Mario is a block-puzzler, not a stratgey game. Think more along the lines chess, in that they usually involve directing pawns through commands in order to achieve your goals. As far as I know Tower Defense games are the only exceptions to that general rule, since they're more of a combination of Real-time strategy and puzzle gaming.

I like some strategy games, but I prefer those that are in the vein of board games - so video games that attempt to emulate the style of play that you'd experience sitting around a table playing a board game.

Greed Corp on the PSN is my current favourite. It's very tactical, and very board-game style.

I also like the Total War series - haven't played Napoleon yet, but I reckon it'd be cool. I loved some of the older PC Napoleonic War games (1813, for instance, was so great at the time) - strategy games that remind me of old tin soldier wargames are always going to be cool.

Ok. So, i like Chess, Checkers, Battleship, tic-tac-toe, and connect 4
Video game wise: My life as a darklord and bloons tower defense. I really like strategy games, but each time i tell my self to get Fire emblem for gcn and ds, it never happens.

I like strategy game, lots!

Fire Emblem is my favourite, but most of the other ones I've played are fantastic. I tend to pretty much only play the RPG-type stategy games though.

I would also kill for a good version of Stratego.

I could have sworn that version was supposed to hit XBLA (maybe PSN also?) this summer.

I like strategy games, I seem to prefer turn-based, but I like RTS as well. My favourites are Final Fantasy Tactics and Civilization IV. I have a bunch of RTS games, but I don't play them much. I really should, but I just don't. They just don't really suck me in that much, I've tried DoW: Soulstorm, Company of Heroes (I actually really enjoy it, but I got stuck and it annoyed me, so I haven't been back ). I absolutely love Civ IV though. I've got way too many mods for it lol

Strategy games and RPG's are where my heart is. Dune was probably the first RTS that ever got me into those types of games. People also forget that before World of Warcraft Blizzard made some pretty awesome ones with Warcraft 2 and 3 being really fun. I also love Starcraft. And also even Maxis sort of created one on the SNES. Sim Ant was a bit like an RTS.

In terms of other strategy games, im not good at labeling the genres so you all can do that for me. I do like the Fire Emblems, but I also like many other types of Strategy games. Final Fantasy Tactics, Ogre Battle, Romance of the three Kingdoms, Valkyrie Profile, Yggdara Union and so many more. Back in the SNES days KOEI has some great ones like the Romance series mentioned, but they also have two good ones on VC. Nobunaga's Ambition and my favorite Genghis Khan 2. Those games are so underrated it's not even funny. Gemfire was also a great one they had back in the day, but it is super easy. I call it a beginners strategy game, but it's still oh so fun. I could keep going, but im going to stop now.

Hey, does anybody have any tips for Warcraft 3? I am getting my butt kicked in the skirmish mode, even easy. I just can't seem to get ready fast enough to get a strong force out there.

My favourite strategy games are Age of Empires 2, Warcraft 3 and Fire Emblem. Don't really know about new strategy games because I have only played older ones. Any recommendations?

And Mickeymac, which one of the "tribes" (or whatever they're called) do you prefer playing? My favourites are the orcs and I always try to make my hero as fast as possible so that he would be better. Don't really know a lot of tips except cheats, and that would be wrong, wouldn't it?

Fire.
Emblem.

Played a good share of Final Fantasy too, and Chrono Trigger, Mario RPG, etc.
Edit: Whoa, devil's face, that was unexpected. :/

The Dawn of War series and Supreme Commander are worth checking out IMO. Oh, and Command & Conquer 3 and Kane's Wrath. Other than that, I can't really come up with anything. I usually play old ones too. If you ask me, I'd recommend waiting for Starcraft II to come out, it looks really good.

Anyone tried a game called Sins of a Solar Empire? I've heard it's good but don't know much about it.

I have some friends who can't stop talking about it. There's a demo available if you feel you need to know more about it. Remember, it's sort of a combination of an RTS and a 4X game, so it'll be different from what you're used to.

Sins is a really good game, also, Company of Heroes puts a nice new spin on RTS games. If you've played DoW2, then you know what its like.

I'm getting Starcraft 1 as a B-day present. Hopefully I'll be able to get in once I register it. They're still doing rounds of testing, if I recall correctly.
