Topic: Spoilers

Okay, a discussion on what constitutes a spoiler, because it seems that this is now being abused, like some people just want to claim everything is a spoiler just to complain. For example, one thing that is not a spoiler, a drawn image of a character or monster. Screen caps with characters or monsters can contain spoilers, but the image itself is simply not a spoiler, even for Pokemon. But some people seem to think they are. So why do some people consider such inconsequential things to be spoilers now?

Originally spoilers were such things as puzzle solutions, story specific elements such as who the main boss is for some games, and any surprises in the story. What are your thoughts?

If its new, and no one wants to see it until it comes out, then its a spoiler.
I wouldn't want someone to tell me anything of a movie I want to see soon and pay money for, it would ruin it. I know there people out there who don't mind it but those people don't have any patience, and there for, try to ruin it for everyone.

You have to just respect the fact that there people out there who wish not to be spoil. And trust me, I do not like to be spoiled, that is one of my main pet peeve.

While that "rule of thumb" may appear flawless from the outside, it's often the companies that display these for games, specifically. Movies are a different matter, lately the descriptions contain spoilers, and enough that you don't even have to watch it for the story. However, like with the example I opened with, these types of things are virtually unavoidable because the company will release them, and for games not yet released you always have way more rumors than facts in the community so you can safely assume it's not even legitimate. Thus, the "rule of thumb" you mentioned fails to work in many situations.

Why are we discussing "Spoilers" in a thread that's clearly meant for "spoliers"?

I think the rule of thumb on this site is that if it's in any way important to the plot, you mark it as a spoiler as well as you can, or at least talk about it as vaguely as possible. This goes double for new or upcoming games. The only exceptions are with official news articles, because a spoiler-concious person would know to stay away from those articles.

In the case of, say, Pokemon, the individual Pokemon are basically all playable characters as well as opponents and bosses. Just as you wouldn't want every character/monster/boss spoiled in a standard RPG, you wouldn't want every Pokemon spoiled for you before you even got to play the game.

And yes, posting an image can very well be a spoiler.

Depends on who and what a spoiler is. Sometimes any spec of info can be a spoiler (A person should always avoid anything with the things name on it then), sometimes anything that isn't minor can be a spoiler, but as for spoilers in posts, anything in the plot or abilities beyond commen knowledge or the synopsis is a spoiler.

Yes, in some cases a simple name or image may be considered a spoiler.

It's not hard to provide a link or a URL for an image or YT video instead of embedding if users are actively asking not to be spoiled. just mark your potential spoilers as such and be respectful of others. a bit of common courtesy goes a long way, and if you've marked your spoilers and someone still clicks through and complains, it's their own fault for not having read properly.
