Now let me get this clear, I don't want to see Mario going on the IOS but if this turns out to be successful for Microsoft (even though it's not a game) this could make shareholders put even more pressure on Iwata:
You should know that Microsoft Office has been available for Mac for a while. This is not really news-worthy at all. Heck, this doesn't even relate to gaming.
The firm has faced criticism for not offering the software until now.
Sounds a lot like what Nintendo have been going through.
Except they are not related at all. Nintendo is a games company that makes their own hardware. Microsoft is a mostly software computer company that has allowed their software on most computers.
This really has nothing to do with the Xbox branch. Microsoft makes software for Mac OS for years, and they even have Skype for desktop Linux nowadays, and while they very much prefer to maintain a closed ecosystem on Windows, they have to support other OS, particularly mobile ones like iOS and Android (a flavour of Linux no less!), because that's what today's consumers expect. It's a mobile, multi-device, multiplatform world we live and work in. "Our way or the highway" policy used to work in the past for Microsoft, but now not so much.
Comparing Microsoft Office to Mario is kind of an stretch.
You don't need Mario on iOS. But millions of businessmen do need to have their files available everywhere. Microsoft has made it so their Office series are the standard everywhere. So not having them in the most-used pad device is very inconvenient.

Windows isn't a closed ecosystem (Other than Windows RT/Windows Phone). If you can just build it and distribute it then it isn't a closed ecosystem. (Even Windows Store isn't because there is an alternative).
