I've been following E3 closer this year than in the past, watching Bethesda and Ubisoft when I normally wouldn't have. The games looked good. But the trailers were riddled with f-bombs. Far Cry 5, Wolfenstein, South Park (probably shouldn't be that surprised), and then Beyond Good & Evil 2 had as much or more than the others put together.
I don't know, maybe I'm being an old prude, but it struck me and something seems wrong with that...I guess I'm referring more to putting it in the trailers and conferences for kids to see on YouTube and so on. I realize there is a place and audience for those games, not trying to say those games shouldn't be made. I can't help but wonder why Beyond Good & 2 had to go that route, though. Just kinda bothered me and was wondering what others thought. Thanks for listening.
It's kinda why I stick with Nintendo...I can handle profanity in video games (like Bayonetta/2), but some of these trailers for other games...it's too much. lol

Keep it PG-13-ish.
Im totally fine with profanity, and if its used for personality or humor, espcially dark humor, count me in. But if its like trevor and their just dropping random f**ks and sh**s is annoying, theirs a place for it, some games deserve it, some dont, the main thing is the games quality
English is not my first language, so profanity in english games and media is very meaningless to me.
I do know how it feels though, whenever I'm playing or watching anything in spanish and they just start throwing swears around to sound "hip" or "real", it makes the whole thing feel a bit cheaper.
Anyway, please let's not list any direct examples, please.
@NF6429 I'm with you on that. I enjoy profanity in games like No More Heroes and Madworld but it can get kinda grating to hear nonstop swearing. It's something I'm trying to stop doing myself and I realize it makes me sound childish and immature
It only bothers me when it's being said by angry, awful people constantly BECAUSE REAL PEOPLE ARE TERRIBLE AND MEAN AND LOUD ARGH!
tbh, I don't get the complaints about the swearing in BG&E. Even after rewatching it, the fact that swearing exists feels so...nothing. It could've been shown on kid's tv, and I barely would've noticed something was off.
As long as it fits with the character it doesn't bother me. The BG&E trailer was fine because it suited the character.
If you had an Australian in a game who was a bit of a bogan? You'd expect a lot of "yeah, nah" and "not bad ey?" but you'd also expect a bit of "s**t yeah" and "it's '**ken rooted". I don't see what the issue is with that.

"Don't stir the pot" is a nice way of saying "they're too dumb to reason with"
I don't mind profanity as long as it's appropriate for whatever current game they're talking about. So dropping F-bombs when revealing a new ultra violent game rated PEGI-18 is fine with me. However, I'd be very critical if Miyamoto started swearing while he's introducing a new Super Mario Odyssey trailer.
Foul language is something I hear people throw around like nothing all day. So I have close to 0% tolerance when it comes to video games; I get enough of it during the day that the words in video games almost always come across to me as cheap, overused, and tasteless. I have other reasons too, but they probably aren't worth mentioning.
BG&E2 trailer made me cringe so hard because it reminded me of some of my own experiences...
I would have never guessed Weezing was so useful until I played a HeartGold Nuzlocke! My YouTube Channel! Video game related, of course! My Pushmo Levels

I don't mind profanity, but a constant lack of articulate expression lowers the level in my opinion. I would take a "...through Hell's heart I stab at thee..." 9 times outta 10 over a "%£^&! you"
I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.

The two don't necessarily go together. At all. An extreme example....
I don't give a f**k about your brick and tile
I don't really care if you're a pedophile
I don't care about no Master Chef
it's as appetising as a whistle blower's doom
or any French cartoon
nothing like a prune to make the death cults bloom
why you think the whole world's gotta be like you?
F**k western supremacy
I ain't sitting around being gallipolized
One man's BBQ's another's hunger strike
Why'd I give a rat's about your tribal tatts?
You came here in a boat you f**king c**t
Ooh whoa, ooh whoa, ooh whoa
You know you love me, I know you care
Just shout whenever and I'll be there
You are my love, you are my heart
And we will never, ever, ever be apart
Are we an item? Girl quit playin'
We're just friends, what are you sayin'
Said there's another, look right in my eyes
My first love, broke my heart for the first time
I'm embarrassed for our species that there are still people out there who think certain words are inherently bad.
The only reason anyone thinks a word is bad is because repressed parents and teachers hammer it into us as kids until it becomes almost instinctive to avoid them. Then we do it to our own kids cos we're unable to think independently or progressively.
There is no reason whatsoever for the word that starts with 'S' and rhymes with 'chit, for example, to be seen as bad. Same goes for the words that rhyme with duck and punt. It's just stupid repressed tradition and a totally unnecessary, self-imposed limitation on expression.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
@gcunit There's a proven cathartic effect to swearing, not to mention the satisfaction of being totally rude to someone you don't like. Without the concept of swearing and it being bad, these words just wouldn't serve their purpose. It may not exactly be rational, but neither is human behaviour in general.
Imagine if Billy Connelly was asked not to swear during his stand-up shows.
Swearing seems to come - and be spoken - more naturally to certain individuals better than others, and while I don't take much pleasure in hearing my colleagues swear, given that I am a teacher just like they are, it does have a way with some folks depending on how they use said swear words.
Some situations are so much more memorable if you swear. 'Gosh darn it' doesn't quite have the same ring to it when somebody kicks a football at a particular region of a mans body, for example.
I believe I have actually being asked not to use Gods name in vain on here before, which is just absurd!
@Zyrac Agree with all of this. It's precisely because we have a spectrum of language ranging from vulgar to rude to polite to obsequious that we can be so expressive. If certain words weren't taboo in certain contexts they wouldn't be nearly as liberating in others. If all words were equal in politeness, we wouldn't have expressiveness; we'd have homogeneity.
It's not about words being 'good' or 'bad', but whether they serve their purpose in a given context.
That Far Cry 5 trailer wouldn't feel as chilling real and gritty if the blood-thirsty savages were forced to bite their tongues and hold back their f-bombs. But the Mario Odyssey footage would feel a lot less playful, charming, and... well, 'Mario' if it was filled to the brim with expletives. Their inclusion and absence serves each of those game's purposes respectively.
BG&E is a tricky one, as it represents a change of tone from the original that fans may not have been expecting. As someone who generally prefers their games on the dreamily whimsical side, I can see why people might object to BG&E2 getting gritty cussing realism injected into its dialogue, but I don't think the language itself is inherently good or bad. It's a matter of taste, essentially. And perhaps age, if the game's language slaps a certificate on it that actually bars you from purchasing it.
I loved those swear words when i was younger. It made the getaway a better game. Nowadays i dont really care if theyre in a game or not.
If i think about my youth i dont think they had a bad influence besides teaching me swear words that other kids already knew. And seriously words shouldnt harm anybody. Let the kids feel edgy. Cutting those words from videogames wont help. Its important that the majority of videogames dont become a gorefest. Im not against violence in videogames but at least the cause should be honourable like saving a son. Its also a good idea if the game lets me play non lethal. If i had kids at the age of 14 id let them play something like gta 5 but not something like hatred or manhunt. I wouldnt even play it myself.
But in the case of beyond good and evil 2 it was a little bit too much of the same word in a short time. It was a bit off putting thats true. Felt cheap. And i think the f word is soo boring. Good swear words should be suitable to the situation and that word is just too universal to have an impact.
