American funny guy, David Letterman, recently told on his late night talk show that he has had secret affairs with an undisclosed amount of female co-workers. In his career, he has made plenty of jokes about politicians who have had birds on the side and as it turns out so has Dave!

So what do you think, should we cut Dave some slack because he is only an entertainer? Also, do you think his credibility is shot and it will hurt the show's ratings?

Well since he only admitted it due to the fact that he was about to be extorted, I don't put much stock in his admission of guilt. I doubt it will hurt his ratings much, though. He is what he is. I'm sure most people knew he was messing around anyway, given his stature with the network and how many opportunities he likely has to sleep with other women.

I don't think humorists have to worry about "credibility" in the same way that anchor people or politicians do. He's always been an entertainer, 100% of the time, and you don't need credibility to be successful at that. (How much credibility does Adam Sandler have?)

Regarding hypocrisy, well, Walt Whitman put it most wisely: "Do I contradict myself? Very well then, I contradict myself."

Nobody's perfect, we all make mistakes, we all do foolish things that we know are wrong. This is a matter for David, the women in question, and his family to deal with. He does not affect the lives of others in the same way that those in positions of power do, so I'm not too concerned with it. They're consenting adults. If he's got anybody to apologize to, it's his family...not us.

Don't get me wrong -- Dave is the best interviewer out there! For instance, he really asked John McCain some hard questions about why he chose Palin for VP.

However, the next time there is a new Bill Clinton-esque scandal I just think the joke will just seem less sincere.

Yeah, I agree with that. The thing is, though, that a good enough humorist (in his case, one with good enough writers) will most likely add in some self-effacing comment the next time he jokes about somebody else for the same reason. Some kind of comic acknowledgment that he himself isn't much better.

I didn't see his "confession" episode, but from what I've read he was cracking jokes about himself already, so I think he'll handle it okay.

TBH, I honestly think scandals (if this kind of thing in the entertainment industry can even so be called) bolster ratings--I hadn't paid any attention to David Letterman in years (he's....not funny...and his writers have seen better days, although to his credit he can be witty) but I was half-tempted to tune in once I heard about his newly-public PImp Status. In the words of the wise guy who wasn't credited with this quote, no publicity is bad publicity.

^ I love how the Inquirer at least doesn't even try to pretend it gives real news unlike the rest of the media...it's probably the most honest publication around.

I agree. The National Enquire "usually" breaks stories long before the mainstream media, for instance, they revealed the John Edwards affair way before CNN or anybody else.

@TG64

To be fair, a tabloid that prints rumors as soon as they come about will often end up being the first publication to "break" the story if it later turns out to be true. ;)

I'm not saying the National Enquire is the most perfect, journalistic institution in the world, but they do seem to be "on the money" frequently. And I trust them more than Fox News!

It'll just be a little harder for him to ask uncomfortable questions to guests with checkered pasts, like a Hugh Grant, that's all. Aside from that, it's a non-issue. He'll walk away with the same undiscriminating audience he came in with.

I'm staying mum on this one, no need to state which side everyone already knows I'm on. Also, it's actually CNBC that has On the Money. ;)

My main issue is that people confess these affairs like simple "mistakes." Mistakes are "whoops, I took the wrong turn", not "whoops, I slept with my employee."

What credibility? he's David Letterman, the late-night comedy show host, not David Letterman, congressman... or David Letterman, President of the United States of America, for that matter. Why do I (or anybody else) have to trust him in order to chuckle at him briefly and then change the channel, like normal? He's got some explaining to do to his own family and friends, sure, but since I don't know him personally (and perhaps more importantly, I don't work for him ;)), I must say that what he's done with whomever does not affect me (or what I think of him, considering I don't normally think of him anyway) one bit, and thus, this is a non-issue for me. :)

To bring things up to speed:

1. Big surprise, Vendetta didn't like what I said and wariowoods did like what I said.

2. deadly.by.design is so correct. Affairs aren't mistakes; they are dirty secrets that are revealed. Dave had no intentions in revealing these before this whole criminal fiasco.
