Topic: Single games that got you into an entire genre

Anyone had little or no interest in a video game genre, until one game changed it all? This seems to have happened to me a lot recently so I thought it would be nice to hear the experiences of others.

More recently for me:
I had absolutely no interest in rail shooters until I played Kid Icarus Uprising...now I'm getting into Panzer Dragoon, and really want to try Star Fox and a few others.
I've also been fairly indifferent when it comes to first person shooters, however playing the original Halo has shown that there are at least some out there for me. Definitely looking forward to continuing with the series and finding more FPSs that I enjoy.

What about you? Did you completely dismiss an entire genre until trying a certain game? Did one game help you to find enjoyment in other similar games?

Golden Sun got me into RPGs. I had no idea what the genre was at the time, but when I played another game (Baten Kaitos I think?), I noticed how similar it was to Golden Sun.

I guess there's a first for every genre I've played, so I'll focus on games that made me want to play more of that genre after I finished (sorry tetris, Mariokart, Super Mario World - I just wanted to play more you).

Dungeons and Dragons Online / MMOs
Super Mario 64 / 3D platformers

I don't think I've had that experience, I've always been open to new genre's and the genre's I've no interest in are genre's I won't get into even if there's one game in that genre I do like.

Bayonetta 2 is probably the biggest one recently. But beyond that? It's pretty rare that a game comes along that makes me take another look at a whole genre. Generally the games I do end up playing just reconfirm my existing tastes.

Well, I wasn't into level making until I played Super Mario Maker, now I'd be willing to try more level editors in the future.

I also has yet to try a point and click game.

Check out my super awesome Super Mario Maker levels.

Kingdom Hearts (JRPGs) - While I had played a couple prior to this (Pokémon R/B/Y/G/S & Paper Mario), I had played them because of the IP & not the genre (which I just never gave any thought to). It was only after I played KH that I purposefully went to other JRPGs.

Call of Duty: World at War (FPS) - Picked it up for Wii as soon as we hooked it up online (our 360 was an older model that needed an extra accessory for wireless internet), and had loads of fun both in the campaign & online. While I haven't played any FPS' recently, this game got me to play lots of others around the same time, such as CoD: MW2, Battlefield 1943, Goldeneye Wii, & Blacklight: Tango Down.

Metroid Fusion (Metroidvania platformers) - Played it once on GBA, then again on 3DS. After that I played Metroid II, Metroid, Super Metroid, Cave Story, & Kirby & the Amazing Mirror.

Red Dead Redemption (Sandbox) - While I had played a few sandbox style games before (like Ultimate Spider-Man), I had never completed any. It wasn't until I was sucked into the world of RDR that I began to rethink the genre. Beat it, and later InFamous. Haven't played any since then.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

Let's see

Dungeon and Dragons Online - MMOs — Before I played DDO back in 2006 I couldn't understand why people enjoyed games like Everquest or World of Warcraft now it's one of my favorite genres.

Borderlands -Modern FPS — I enjoyed old school corridor FPS like Doom, Goldeneye, Quake back in the day but modern FPS games like CoD, Battlefield etc I just couldn't enjoy. I decided to try Borderlands on a whim mainly due to the loot system and I enjoyed it alot. Still not big on FPS games but I will give them a chance now.

Heroes of the Storm - MOBA — I always wanted to try a MOBA like League of Legends or DOTA but honestly the horror stories I heard of the communities kept me from trying them. Well I got into the alpha for HotS and I enjoyed it alot. The genre is quite fun too.

Final Fantasy -RPG — When I was a kid I tried Dragon Warrior when I got it free by subbing to Nintendo Power long story short I had no clue what I was doing so I just found the game boring. A few years later I tried Final Fantasy over at my friends house where he explained to me what to do and what the game was all about. From that day forward I was a huge fan of RPGS, still am to this day.

I had no interest in visual novels until I played through Saya no Uta. Now, I still don't read them often, but I'm much more open to them now.

Currently Playing: Yakuza Kiwami 2 (SD)

Ace Attorney got me into adventures. I admit, at first I thought a game about lawyers was going to be lame. Now I have played all the games in the series (including the english patched AAI2, which is a 10/10 game), Ghost Trick, Hotel Dusk, The Secret of Cape West, Trace Memory, 999 and VLR. I'm very hyped to play Zero Escape 3 next year.

Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones and SMT: Devil Survivor got me into tactical rpgs. I played some of Disgaea before that, but I didn't really get how the gameplay worked until much later.

Currently bored (while change when I stop being bored)

Bayonetta 2 for me. It made me take a second look in regards to hack n' slash games,I previouly had dismissed al those games, like DMC.

I have a chronic lack of time, for everything.

Now playing: Okami HD, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Xenoblade Chronicles into RPGs. I thought they were lame until I learned how to play them from Xenoblade. I played a few RPGs before, but I only liked some specific parts and hated grinding and items limit. But Xenoblade made me more open to them.
