Topic: Should Nintendo Start buying more Game Developers?

With Sony's recent purchase of Insomniac and Microsoft getting as many developers as possible to spur their Xbox brand, Nintendo is the only one not acquiring more studios. Acquiring more studios could help them with their drought problems, but who would they get? Or do you believe they don't need any more studios to help them along in the future?

Nintendo getting Maxis then we will have The Sims and My Sims return with Mario twist. 😛

@Anti-Matter I would love that, if solely so Maxis was no longer a part of EA.

@AnnoyingFrenzy I distinctly do no like this trend of first party companies buying up smaller studios. It is better for us as consumers and gamers alike to have the freedom of choice.

That said, from Nintendo's point of view, they should probably look to keep a careful lock on companies like Game Freak, Pokemon, Monolith, Intelligent Systems and others they traditionally work closely with. Much of Nintendo's success is on the back of the titles that are exclusive to them both their own, and ones made by companies I think of as "second parties".

There is also the concern however, of buying out a studio, and as a result key developers leave that studio, taking their talents and skills with them. The last thing Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft want to do, is to spend millions of dollars buying the nothing but a studio name.

@Anti-Matter @AnnoyingFrenzy I would love pulling Maxis away from EA. Anyone buying them and getting the rights away from EA would probably be good. It would be so nice to have the Sims, Sim City and other classic Maxis series get made without the EA poison of milking every last dime from players...

Seriously, how much would it cost to have the Sims 4 with all the DLC at this point? Google tells me, on sale, over 330USD, 600+ if you'd bought it all new. That is just evil.

You mean like Rare with Microsoft? That's always a risk. Also, based on how Rare has been doing with Microsoft, it makes me worried about the other companies MS has recently purchased.

I would have liked to see Nintendo buy up Evolution to make an Excite Truck, Bike, or Bots. Also had this dream idea of them getting Kojima and Del Torro to rework their Silent Hills concept into an Eternal Darkness sequel.

They don't have a drought problem at the moment. They did last year, but this year is insanely packed full of releases.

@Dezzy Yeah, now we have a lot of high-quality titles coming at a good pace, but last year saw long periods of time with no big new releases. Even the first half of this year was particularly light on releases up to Mario Maker; Yoshi was the only major release! This leads me to believe that another drought is only inevitable.

@judaspete Man, I just want an Eternal Darkness HD Remake at this point. I'd settle for a Remaster, just anything to do with that gem officially; its been too long.

@AnnoyingFrenzy The thing is, post holiday season until spring is usually a slow period. I feel like people always forget that. But there are the "summer blockbusters" and then the lineup of games going into the winter holiday season and these are generally where most big releases come around.

@Heavyarms55 True, but what you described is a two-month span, January-early March. The past two years Nintendo has filled the first 6 months with ports alongside one new game. I'm not complaining too much if they are going to do ports the best time would be in the early part of the year. The problem is that the "competition" is getting brand new major games all year long, including the early months.

@AnnoyingFrenzy Naw, I'm talking like January through like, late April. And Sony and MS tend to slow down during those months too. Or at least they used to.

@Heavyarms55 Well Microsoft is slow in general, they barely have any major exclusives as they seem to be holding them back for Scarlet. As for Sony, God Of War came out April for them. They also got major third party games in REmake 2 and KH3 last January. I know those last two aren't exclusives or made by Sony, but they are major games Nintendo had no equivalent for.

Edit: They had New Super Mario Bros U: Deluxe, a port and Travis Strikes Again.

@AnnoyingFrenzy Yeah, but at least of KH3, there really wasn't anything Nintendo or MS could release to compete with that. That was a game people had been wanting for years and years and years and would likely have overshadowed almost any other release at the same time anyway.

But I see your point. It would be nice if there were a few more releases during that time frame.

You forgot their highest-selling game of the year, lol

@Dezzy My Bad, I meant to say up to Mario Maker! I'll edit it so it shows my point better.
