They have put out more non-Pokemon games in recent years. Download games, but still new IPs.
If they can do those still and put out their money making Pokemon games at the same time, let them. Maybe one of those IPs will be successful enough to make a full blown sequel that becomes their 2nd big moneymaker someday...
True, but Pokemon Go revived interest in the franchise again. And thanks to the 20th anniversary and the anime's 20th anniversary this year cashing in on the nostalgia good ol' days, they won't have to resort to an MMO for a good long time
I'm in agreement with some here that GF shouldn't take a break with Pokemon (especially with how hot the IP is right now), but they could be doing more. I feel that they've made some good steps over the years, but there have been plenty of missteps as well. Honestly, sometimes I feel that they play things a bit too safe, but at the same token, look how divided some of the fanbase is over how trials were handled and gyms were essentially removed in Sun/Moon. You can't please everyone, and there will always be some dissenters and Genwunners.
I've touched on what I've liked and disliked with my recent jaunt in Pokemon Sun elsewhere, so I won't get into that here. I will list off some ways that I feel that they could improve the series:
1. Bring back difficulty modes. I think Black/White 2 introduced a mechanic like this, though I remember its implementation to be a bit confusing and locked behind completing the game before a mode change became available. This, I feel, would work better than a one size fits all adventure.
2. Make the games less linear. I don't mind some linearity here and there in order to streamline the experience, but I think the last time I genuinely got confused in a Pokemon game (and, for the most part, enjoyed it) were in Mt. Coronet and Stark Mountain in Gen 4.
3. Improve the story elements. I know some want Pokemon to have few story elements, but for the most part I enjoy the narrative in Pokemon games. X/Y's narrative was admittedly hard for me to trudge through, but even that had a couple of decent moments. Compared to that, Sun/Moon's narrative (though with a few plot holes of its own) was a breath of fresh air. That said, some story elements could be better and less railroaded. I didn't think it would be as difficult as it was in the beginning of Sun to backtrack just to catch a Pichu.
4. Too many extras? The question mark is there because I do enjoy some of the extras found in Pokemon games (my favorites so far are Poke Pelago, Join Avenue, and the movie studio in BW2). However, I feel that some features are trivial at best and can be done without. Personally I feel that Festival Plaza didn't really need to be a thing, though that may be because I only use online features for trading purposes. Basically, trim off some of the fat, but not all of it.
There are many personal touches that I would love that they did with the series, but many of those (if they were to happen) would more likely end up in a spinoff game.
Currently playing: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch)

For the most part I agree with this, but I'd like to revise #4:
4. Be smarter about what features to keep and what features to leave behind. I get that Game Freak wants to give each game a unique selling point, but they have a tendency to throw the baby out with the bathwater and get rid of new features that actually enhance the core gameplay. Things like the multiple difficulty modes, the PSS, and DexNav should not be regional flavor, they're too useful to the core gameplay to not be permanent additions. At the very least rebrand them under a different name but keep the functionality, like if the Rotom Dex had the ability to scan the overworld for Pokemon with HAs, Egg Moves, and shinies but they didn't call it the Dexnav then it would be somewhat unique without losing what made it great to begin with. Things like Contests and Secret Bases, mini games that aren't all that important to the core gameplay, are better candidates for region exclusive features.
@Tyranexx Oh shoot I'd forgotten about Join Avenue. That was a fun from what I remember. I wish they could bring back difficulty modes also (not like BW2 though, you needed a completed save file for it to be unlocked) or at least a new game plus of some sort. People shouldn't have to a nuzlocke for added difficulty.
Just a geek that likes video games, and spends to much time playing Smash Bros. and Fortnite.

Join Avenue seemed nice, I have never played a Pokémon game with others so I probably didn't get the full experience.
Difficulty modes should a be standard by now. You should just be asked at the start of the game "how experienced are you?" or something like that. If someone needs to change it they should just be able to change it quickly in the options menu.
Pokemon Refresh/Amie was nice, it probably won't work on the Switch though due to the lack of a touchscreen at all times. I think the reintroduction of the follow feature from HGSS would be nice though, or something similar just so that pokemon seem more like friends or pets instead of slaves.
A Battle Frontier or equivalent should be standard post game content by now. The Gen 4 battle frontier was really good. Gen 5 had similar areas such as the battle subway and the world tournament (which was the best thing ever!)
Gen 6 and 7 really didn't have anything that good. The battle maison was only fun for so long and the only good part of the battle tree was the cameos, not the actual gameplay.
I liked other features like the weather in Unova, but I don't see that transferring to any other region.
@Bolt_Strike: #4 was an afterthought just as I was about to post, so thanks for expanding upon it! I agree.
@TheTetrisGuy: Yeah, I also agree. I wasn't saying we should put any sort of new game+ behind completing the game first. I mentioned that only because that's how BW2 handled it. I would like having that option in the beginning.

I wouldn't exactly say the Battle Subway and PWT were similar. What stood out the most about the Battle Frontier was the unique battling styles. Things like Triple, Rotation, and Inverse battles were closer to what you'd find in the Battle Frontier.
@Bolt_Strike I was just focusing on areas that were only for battles, and in my opinion the battle subway and PWT are better options for that in Unova. White Forest and Black City were not as enjoyable for me.
The Battle Frontier does what most other battle facilities do, and while it was a nice to see a change in Unova it was useful having everything in one concentrated area for Platinum and HG/SS.
They added the Battle Frontier for Emerald and improved it for Platinum. They tried to be different in B/W and it's sequels which wasn't bad but they have ruined it in the next two generations.
I just don't understand why they swapped it for the Battle Maison, which was terrible. The Battle Frontier was an easy formula for them to follow, but they decided to add one boring house instead...
@TheTetrisGuy They could probably do it if they really wanted to, most of it was colour swaps for the grass and ground. It might take more effort to add the winter exclusive items though, I think they were a thing anyway (snow ramps maybe?).
It was a cool concept but it wasn't too enjoyable having a real life month with the same season, especially when you play through the whole story in less than a month. We'll just have to wait for the Generation 5 remakes in 10 years or so if we're going to see it again, hopefully the series improves by then.
@Kimyonaakuma Dang, i fell old just thinking about that 😄 But yeah I think they could, it's just a matter of will they, since it might be more trouble than it's worth to.
@TheTetrisGuy I guess we'll just have to wait and see! 😲 It's GameFreak so we really have no way of predicting it.
I don't know if I'll be able to keep up with all of the Pokémon when I'm older. The amount of them will just grow and grow while I forget more and more. My brain does specialize in useless information though so who knows 😂
I might have to just stop playing when they reach 1000, I'm still not 100% sure about the Unova Dex or anything after that...
Hell yes I think Gamefreak should take a break from Pokemon. I mean financially there is little reason to but almost every time they've made a game other than pokemon, it's been an unexpected gem for me. I LOVE drill dozer, pocket card jockey was super addicting, harmo knight was fantastic, and tembo the badass elephant is a solid 2d platformer.
I would love to see more of that creativity from gamefreak. In addition, I just think they've been putting out too many pokemon games as of late. I mean from 2011 to 2017 we've had BW, BW 2, X & Y, ORAS, Sun and Moon, and now Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon. 6 games in around 6 years with them only taking a single year off back in 2015. That's kinda ridiculous and I desperately wish they would slow down. It's no surprise the games started to feel samey when they're released on a nearly annual basis
I don’t think they should take a break, but they should take a lot of time developing the next one. The first step should be a good postgame, like a Emerald’s Battle Frontier.
@Ardisan So long as Pokemon remains profitable, don't expect them to stop any time soon. And why should they really? There is no lack of talented developers at other companies, why does Game Freak need to change what is not broken?

Game Freak can take a break for a while for Pokemon games, but they should keep going with their other games. New IPs are preferable as long still targeted for Kids. Maybe they can create somewhat like Harvest Moon or Story of Seasons with better graphics and gameplay.
