Topic: Should Game Freak take a break from Pokemon?

I wish the fans would let Game Freak do games other than Pokemon. I've seen them work on great games such as Drill Dozer, and Tembo the Badass Elephant and I feel like if this keeps up we are going to keep getting a over-saturation of Pokemon games. I like Pokemon but I really don't wan't the quality of the games to drain out from making so much of them in a close time frame

I barely forum.

Not going to lie, it would be interesting to see what else they could do besides Pokemon. I can't name a single non Pokemon game they've worked on, except for Yoshi, but it would be interesting to see what else they could do.

Didn't Sun and Moon come out last year?...We're already getting these Ultra games...I'd rather them slow down instead. Make another sequel to that rhythm game...or the elephant game that never made it to a Nintendo system for whatever reason. Another new IP would be nice...

I think the main reason why they don't release MOAR ips is due to them not selling so great. Drill Dozer came out when the GBA was kinda at this point, on the bottom of the DS, and Pulseman could've came back, but since it didn't sell so GEWD on Wii shop channel, DAT idea was scrapped. Pokemon revs in moneymoneymoneymoneymoney, cashcashcashcashcash, etc.etc.etc, so it's not surprising they keep revving DAT up.

....Also Pokemon Snap 2 plz

I made Sheldon & Mr. Randoms back on Flipnote Hatena, now i'm a kangaroo mod that has a funko pop collection!

I'm not keen politics since that stuff is spooky, I'd rather watch SpongeBob over Fox News anyways!

I 100% agree. Considering even the Mario Kart team got to make Arms, it seems like a reasonable idea.

I think they‘re just used to be making money with that one thing. So why would you be doing something else and run the risk, or rather certain possibility, of not making as much money as you‘d with that thing? I doubt you could even go around and market the game as 'by GameFreak', which didn‘t lead to much better sales, I think. GameFreak isn‘t just as well known as Pokémon.

Looking at the main series releases, there have never been any big breaks in-between releases. Not many may be spending as much finishing a Pokémon game as I do (150-200 hours for the road to becoming Champion alone) but once I put down one game, the next releases, which has lead me to become burned out from the series I claim to be my favorite gaming franchise. I‘d like Pokémon to become more of an event, a once per console thing like Mario Kart, Zelda or Smash Bros., instead of a yearly thing with same-ish releases like Call of Duty or FIFA. But I want Pokémon to evolve even moreso: I know GF nor TPC will ever do that, but make the franchise open world, make us see all the differently sized Pokémon roam around, chase us, play with us, allows us to tackle each Badge in the order we wish for with levels increasing with each badge, allows us to play the game together with friends via wireless play (we can witness one another battle other trainers, trade items and Pokémon on the fly and so on). This is the next step in Pokemon evolution I‘d like to see in 2020 or so.

Given how Pokemon = money I doubt it will ever be a one console thing if it hasn't in 20 + years.(although many series used to be a yearly tradition like mega man and castlevania, so I could be wrong) Although I think the choose your badge order idea would be a great next step for the series.

But back on topic, I think it would be interesting to see them work on a more traditional RPG like final fantasy or something similar. See what they can do when they don't need to worry about the player possibly having 800+ Party members.

It would be nice to see something new from Game Freak, however Pokémon is such an important game for not only the fans but the new generations of children that grow up with their generation of Pokémon. I think they have the eye on the ball with their commitment to the series.

@GrailUK I just think that they should slow down on the Pokemon releases. I feel that if this keeps going the way its going, it would burn out Pokemon fans and get the "COD" effect where you get so many at a close period of time and sooner or later the series starts to deteriorate in quality. I don't want that to happen to Pokemon... There shouldn't be no harm in working on side games while planning out a Pokemon game in the future as I am sure they have the money to experiment with new projects.

Maybe the reason that some of their side games sold less was because maybe it wasn't advertise well. I never heard about any of their side games without the aid of news sites and just googling their other games.

@Ardisan Given that a lot of people usually only play the first game in a generation. Look at BW vs. B2W2, 15m to 8m worldwide. So that's helping a lot of people avoid burnout, as the extra games in a generation usually aren't major. Besides, all signs are pointing to the next Pokemon game not being until 2019, which will be three years since Sun and Moon's initial release. That's usually the gap between games for a lot of fans. If you are feeling burned out, maybe you should consider dropping down to that sort of schedule.

Financially they probably won't change, they will sells millions regardless of it being considered a good or bad entry to the series.

However I think they should slow down, the series is improving it's graphics but the rest is getting worse. I'd prefer it if they went back to the old way of doing things - two new games for a generation with a third version the year after.

If they spent a year working on the story, region, characters ect and then release it at the end of year after they would have time to make a good story and a great region. More post game content and pokemon would be great too.

They could release a third version a year after with a slightly different or extended story. Maybe with a focus on the third legendary and post game content. It would probably sell less but still do well.

I'm not a fan of their new take of making the game easier, making the regions more linear and adding fewer pokemon. But realistically we don't have a say in these situations

@Kimyonaakuma Why not just one version? And DLC after a year to add some new areas and/or forms to the game?

Octane

Kimyonaakuma

@Octane It just didn't seem as realistic to me. DLC probably won't sell as well as a third version.

@Kimyonaakuma Loot boxes are a lucrative business too, but that doesn't mean they're consumer friendly! I'm just thinking how much backlash any other company would get if they released two versions of a game with minor differences, and later did the same thing for a complete edition with the DLC included (without making it available on its own).

Octane

Kimyonaakuma

@Octane Loot boxes are usually in console games that are geared towards older gamers.
A large part of the audience for Pokémon is kids who won't be buying games for themselves. A lot of people don't have parents that are informed about this kind of stuff and are more inclined to buy a physical copy at a supermarket or something like that. A DLC pack is a harder sell for those people because they'll be paying for it online or buying a code at a store, which won't be normal for them.

The rest of us will probably buy it either way and Gamefreak can charge £30/£40 for a "new" game. DLC would cost way less so they wouldn't get as much money anyway.

If loot boxes become part of pokemon I'll be worried, I can put up with a good amount of annoying business practices but that is not one of them

@Octane Fire Emblem Fates and Street Fighter come to mind, but granted not to the extent of Pokemon.

@Kimyonaakuma My question is how could loot boxes be put in and are important enough to be worthy of a purchase? Most games that use loot boxes it's for cosmetic stuff, like Overwatch, or help your character improve, like Injustice 2. I couldn't see it really meshing well with Pokemon.

@TheTetrisGuy They could do limited edition trainer outfits, mega stones, Z crystals, things like that. Maybe give people access to rare pokemon or keep the shiny version behind a paywall. They could figure out some way of doing it..
