I suppose you mean this one, right? Not really that much of an 'amazing concept', it was simply a badly planned 'second Genesis'. Nobody would've bought the same console twice (except for some collecotrs and die-hard fans), even with the notion of it being portable. It was nothing but a portable version of an already-existing console, but at a much higher price.
It's generally a bad idea to make a home console into a straight portable with all games for that home console being fully compatible with the portable. It makes people feel ripped off, since they more or less get the same, but only if they pay more. It's the iPhone strategy all over again, except not quite as intentional.
So yeah, it was ahead of its time, but in the end it was only going nowhere ahead of its time, as well.
