In fact you've gone up on my respect gauge. That was the first movie I thought of when I saw the topic title.
well, Eragon was a crappy book too, so if the movie was 'ruined', i'd say it's a simple case of garbage in, garbage out.
anyway, ruined movies based on books -- i'd have to say the most recent The Count of Monte Cristo was nearly unrecognizeable with all the changes they made to it, the barstewards... mangling my favorite book

I kinda liked Eragon as a book. It wasn't the most original fantasy book ever but it did the job, especially since it was written by a 15-year old. But the movie just had almost nothing in common with it.
I don't know if I've seen any movies that were ruined by their translation to film, but Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was by far the worst film adaptation of Harry Potter so far.
I disagree. I actually thought The Goblet of Fire was one of the better Harry Potter movies. Order of the Phoenix, however...
Seriously!? I thought Order of the Phoenix was definitely the best one, and Goblet of Fire was the worst
They cut out a lot of stuff from both GoF and OotP, although they are by far the longest HP books that had to be crammed into single movies. I think OotP is a worse adaptation mainly because the Room of Requirement montage moved things along too quickly, they did a terrible job with the Battle at the Ministry (the best part of the book), and they did a terrible job explaining the prophecy without even telling us what it actually said. I also think that if they went to the trouble of including Rita Skeeter in the GoF movie where she had no notable role, they should've brought her back for the OotP movie for Harry's interview for the Quibbler, a notable scene that I really wish hadn't been cut out.
Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

Eragon was alright. I never saw the movie, mostly because I heard such awful things about it. That's also the first thing that came to mind when I saw this topic. I did really like The Count of Monte Cristo, if we're talking about the same one (with Jim Caviezel or however his name is spelled.) I never read the book though, so I guess that makes a difference.
@Bulbasaurus As for Harry Potter, I was expecting they would cut a lot out of Order of the Phoenix, as it's the longest of the series, and I thought they did it really well. They could have made the movie longer though, and no one would have cared -- it's the shortest movie so far. And as for Rita Skeeter; the fact that they did just shove her in the movie version of Goblet of Fire is another reason I didn't like it, and I'm glad they didn't try it again with Order of the Phoenix. The reason Harry Potter is so good is not the main plot; it's the character interaction and development, and the movie of Goblet of Fire lost almost ALL of that. They focused solely on the Triwizard Tournament, and even skipped most of the resolution -- it was horrible. The whole movie felt like someone was saying "okay, let's hurry this along, we have things to do" and then in the end when they actually started to take their time with things, it just ended.
Oh, and the boys' hair in that movie makes me want to barf.
All of them. I can't think of any Book-to-Movie translation that was ever really anywhere near as good as the books they're based on.
You're trippin' fool.
A Clockwork Orange. American Psycho. The Graduate. THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. THE GODFATHER.
The Bourne trilogy, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Where the Wild Things Are, Jurassic Park and as somebody already said 2001: A Space Odessy.
Now, back on topic. I imagine a lot of people are going to start trash-talking the new Alice in Wonderland movie, and I will say the first time I saw it I loathed it. But the second time I saw it I really liked it. Is it entirely too "Disney"? Yes. Does it make far too much sense? Yes. But I felt it captured the spirit of Carol, and it's visually a work of art. As a rabid Carol fan the film was indeed disappointing, but I appreciate what Burton tried to do and I certainly wouldn't say he ruined the books.
I cant see the slightest how one can call Tim Burton Disney at all. He is his own genre.
You clearly haven't seen the movie. I'm not calling Tim Burton "Disney". Disney produced this movie. Tim Burton directed it, but the script was written by a long-time Disney writer and the story is about as "Disney" as it gets. Burton's incredible art direction and sly wit are still apparent, but this is a Disney movie illustrated by Burton, and not the other way around.

lol, our opinions differ greatly on the book version, but if the movie was that different, perhaps i should give it a shot sometime :3

I agree with Bulbasaurus Rex. Percy Jackson was a good movie, but it was really different from the book. Also, was I the only one who thought that the characters were alot older in the movie?
I hear its amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork does a raw blink on hari-kiri rock!!! I NEED SCISSORS!!! 61!!!

Those have got to be some of the best adaptations I've seen. I can't wait for the Hobbit! Also, not many Disney movies follow the books.
I think the first one is the best! The 3rd for me is the worst but its still good in that sorta way. The 2nd was awesome for the fighting!!

oh man.. the LOTR films were epic. for me, the best is the 3rd, followed by the 2nd, then the 1st. and the 1st one is still awesome! the only really big difference from the book to movie is that stuff that happens in the 2nd book is in the end of the 1st film, and stufff like that, but other than that, it is the best book to film adaption I have ever seen. they are great visual guides to the books.

Howl's Moving Castle - Loved both the movie and the book. Saw the movie first since I love Miyazaki, but then read the book and loved it too. Miyazaki basically kept the essence of the book but made it his own.
