GameInformer is only 'going strong' because they're GameStop's pet magazine; they give the subscriptions along with their customer loyalty program.

I can't see Nintendo Power being around in the next 5 years or so. The only other magazine I can think of is Gameinformer. But they're going strong.

@TBD I'm not celebrating. Trust me I party for much better things in life. Rather it's a relief. They didn't have much talent anyways. I remember one of the writers there copying another sites review word for word. Conduit maybe? I can't remember the game, lol.

Nintendo Power is going to keep going. Future publishing has already stated that its one of their most sucessful magazines and that they're in the process of making the digital jump.

(a) one writer does not a publication make. it was Water Warfare, btw, and the person who did it was fired over the incident. they also took down all of his other reviews on the site. what more could you have asked of them? they did not know what was going on, and they took appropriate action when informed.
(b) did you miss the comment where Waltz said he worked for them? come on, show some tact please :/

Yeah, the gaming industry doesn't really suit print magazines. People as a whole are more interested in immediate news and "free" content then in-depth reporting and paying for high-quality writers.

Not that there aren't some high quality games writers out there working online, but it's a pretty tough ask to make money out of it.

It sucks. Was looking over an issue of Gameinformer and it reminded me how much I love the format of in-depth previews and reviews. You rarley get the same type of attention to detail (typeography,Page layout, distinct writing style) that you don't really get with most websites.

Yeah, I still make a habit of buying and reading Edge because I like to support good publications, and Famitsu in Japan is still a big, weekly deal. It's hard though. I think ultimately there'll only be room for two or three games publications in the market.

One writer at IGN gives a game a 7/10 instead of an 8, and NL's community gives them a low blow but your never there to defend them? There's a lot of hate towards IGN from NL, alone. I can name a few members who have talked about writers being "crap" or other curse words because of their "poor" reviews. Constantly.

But when Beautiful Joe over here says he dislikes GamePro and is relieved to see this, he's the antichrist.

Yes, because people losing their jobs is a great thing? Not cool, man — show some respect, please :/

You must give respect before you can earn it. As a gaming magazine I've grown to dislike them over the years.

This is one of the worst time of years to lose a job and you show no sympathy. Granted the might be in your opinion a bad magazine or reviewers but that still doesnt mean they arent people. Even if they were bad the dont deserve to lose their jobs during the Christmas season.

Maybe you need to lose your job and see what its like.
not cool, Tasuki, chill plz — TBD

Anyway back on track.

I remember picking up a few issues during the PS era since I had Nintendo Power to cover Nintendo games I wanted something so I could see reviews for PS games since I was into PS during that era. I wouldnt say it was a bad magazine I found the reviews pretty decent and they helped me choose a few good games.

I also remember them having a game show named Game Pro back in the early 90's I want to say. In fact I remember seeing on that show the code for Super Castlevania to take you all the way to Dracula.

But in this day and age its not surprising to see a magazine go out of business. I mean with the internet nowadays you can get info in secs rather than having to wait a month. Still it is sad to see something close down after being around for awhile.

@VJ: would you like me to go down the line citing review after review where our own people here have wound up in the same line of fire for rating something lower than another online publication? It's not what you're saying, it's how you've said it. "Yes! Today is great" is absolutely tactless.

Would Love to see Newscorp get off their abuts and star a 1up magazine. Was reading their Interview with Fumito Ueda and would love too see that in magazine format. Either that or a Underground Indie game mag in the vain of the Believer or Dazed and Confused.

It would be almost impossible to launch a new magazine in this environment, sadly. The start up costs would be astronomical, let alone finding advertisers.

I'd really love to see an industry publication that was aimed at the developers and publishers, rather than the gamers. If there is one, I haven't come across it, but it's those B2B magazines where the really interesting stuff usually is.

Corbs

Sadly, magazines just aren't very practical anymore with the internet right there at your fingertips. And since we're saving the trees, I see print media as a whole slowly fading away in the near future.

Plain old gamer :)
